Stupid Parenting Questions

Re: Stupid Parenting Questions

  • I've heard the same thing @NoraAurora. My little guy has hiccups sometimes but not that often. OR I just don't feel them. While they were listening to the Doppler last week at my appointment he had the hiccups but I couldn't feel them!?

  • My dd did have a lot of hiccups as a newborn. Some made me feel so bad because her whole body shook. If she was trying to sleep and got them, we would give her a small amount of gripe water and that usually helped.
  • @NoraAurora would you be able to find where you read that about hiccups being good? Cause ya my hubby read one old article about hiccups being bad and made me call the hospital to make sure he was okay.  I would love to show him a report that says hiccups are great

Okay I have a stupid question - not on parenting but sex after you're given the all clear.  Will boob play during sex cause leaking?  Obviously sucking would cause the boob doesn't know the difference between hub and baby, but if he plays with them will they leak?
They can. Orgasm releases oxytocin, the same hormone associated with let down. Many moms find that they can minimize leaking by either wearing a sports bra during sex or just by using their fingers and pressing inward on their nipples for a minute if they start to leak.

I did a quick google search but couldnt find anything :(
  • @LauraPCOS here's one article that talks about it and there were many others that said it's normal

    https://www.thelaboroflove.com/articles/why-do-babies-hiccup-so-much-in-the-womb

I said something about the hiccups to my doctor a couple weeks ago and he actually mentioned how people used to get really scared because of the old edition of "What to Expect..." but that they're actually a good thing because baby is practicing breathing and using their diaphragm.
  • @LauraPCOS  I did some reading on hiccups too and all I found were bad things, like the cord being wrapped around the baby's neck. So I'm glad to hear of people reading nothing but good things. Has helped ease my mind for sure.

This is exactly what I was told by the ultrasound tech at a BPP.  His hiccups counted as "breathing practice."
  • @NoraAurora haha yea my LO gets them 9/10 times after I eat too so I just imagine her in there pigging out on the "tastey" fluid :p
  • Soo diaper rash cream, do you use it at all times regardless of if they have a rash or not?
  • @samkins only if they have a rash.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @samkins just when there is a rash. I usually take a minute to fan baby's bottom dry between changes too. Who wants to be wet down there all the time?
  • Thanks, I've read both things,  rash only and to help prevent rash put it on no matter what, esp at night...
  • Some babies are sensitive to stuff too. My youngest couldn't do zinc at all cause it would only get worse. I only used corn starch in my kids diapers before bed and nap times. It wicked the moisture away and was the best and isn't full of any other stuff.

  • The nurse at my prenatal class said they shouldn't get a diaper rash within the first few weeks, so if they do, it might actually be a reaction to the wipes (most likely) or diapers you're using.  If this happens, she recommended using just water and a clean cloth to clean their bottoms as well as zinc cream until it cleared up, then try your wipes again to see if it happens again.

  • DS got a rash right away as a newborn - it was thrush. He also had it in his mouth and gave it to my nips. Fun stuff. So I guess if they do get a rash right away, check their tongues too for white coating- plus your nipples might burn like fire (worse than what's normal, not that you will know what that means if it happens as a FTM).
  • How soon can you sterilize bottles? My c-section is scheduled for October 14th. Would now be too soon?

  • @Cakimmy30 once sterilized you can wash them in the dishwasher. You only need to sterilize once. So whenever you ready to sterilize  :)

This confuses me. With DS we sterilized in the dishwasher. I guess not all dishwashers have a sterilize setting...?

This is what I was told @NoraAurora

No, although you should sterilize them before using them for the first time (the same goes for pacifiers, sippy cups, or other feeding gear). After that, many pediatricians feel that dishwashers (especially those with hot, sanitizing rinse cycles) or a good scrubbing with hot soapy water will do a thorough job of getting the bottles and nipples clean and free of germs. Just be sure to place bottles in the top rack of the dishwasher so they don't melt. Use a basket for small parts like the nipples. It's not a bad idea to sterilize your supply of bottles once in a while, just to be on the safe side, and especially after your baby's been sick. Some parents buy a special bottle sterilizer, but they're not necessary. Soaking bottles in a big pot of clean, boiling water for about five minutes works just as well.

  • @NoraAurora You still have me beat, I'll just be handwashing LO's hand-me-down bottles with hot, soapy water and calling it good.

+1, sort of, because even when I had one I still scrubbed the eff out of dishes before loading them. It was mostly a glorified steamer and drying rack to me.

We didn't have a dishwasher at our old house when DD was born. I exclusively pumped for her so I had to hand wash all of the pump stuff plus bottles. No fun.

Ugh. I have always had a dishwasher (except when growing up) and I still loathed all the washing that EP involves. If BFing doesn't work out with this LO, she's getting Baby's Only formula and I will never ever look back.
  • For any second time momma's, how soon after a vaginal delivery is it safe and comfortable to sleep on the tummy again?
  • @NicholeL16 I would think its ok right away. My second night in the hospital after my section my dr said I could sleep on my side/ tummy. It just took a few minutes for it to be comfortable with pressure on my incision.

  • @mkc3888 How are you feeling? I just found out I have to have a c-section and am worried about the healing process after. And does breastfeeding hurt your incision? Your comments always make me feel better!!

I think it's fine immediately. I've never been told not to. How comfortable it is may depend on you. It's going to take a while for your uterus to return to its normal size.

  • @mck3888 @kelliott09 Thanks ladies! I've always been a tummy sleeper so I am really looking forward to that! I thought it would be longer if I had a c section so that is good to know!
  • @NicholeL16 I didn't have any discomfort from my abdominal region, but I did from my leaky boobs!

For bottle sterilizing- I already did all of ours, and LO isn't due until the 28th! Same with pacis. I did the boil method (5 min for soft parts, 10 for the bottles themselves). I made sure they were 100% dry, then put them all fully back together with covers. Now they wait :)

  • @books&icecream I didn't find breastfeeding too bad after my c sections. I just used my arm muscles to hold baby as much as possible so the weight wasn't across my belly and it was fine. Also the football hold or side laying are good ones to keep the weight off your tummy. A pillow, even just a normal one, gives your arm some support when holding them.

  • @NicholeL16, it would be fine as far as your abdomen, but engorged breasts are no joke. It was about 5 months before I could comfortably lay on my stomach all night without leaking everywhere or ending up in a lot of pain.

    This^

unfortunately for us tummy sleepers, once your milk comes in you still won't be comfortable on your tummy for awhile. Possibly not even until you've weaned :( and you don't want to ignore the discomfort because mastitis.
