  • @annabenanna is the qualify good from Wildbird? I follow them on Instagram and have been debating ordering a ring sling!

  • I feel the need to add to the regional grammar dialogue: I'm originally from central PA, very close to Baltimore, MD Ballmerr. I have a strong dislike for the mid-Atlantic dialect: you'uns I've even heard the plural of the plural you'uns'es. Where I hail from, people carry pocket-books and warsh their clothes in the crick. The O's are very strong and hard raydiOH=radio.

Now I live in Ohio. Where all the A's are flat and everyone drinks pop.

Everywhere I've lived (even in the South) ONE thing really truly never ceases to rankle my nerves: the DOUBLE-NEGATIVE bum Bum BUM!!!!! Aint never. Don't never. Not nobody. <SCREAMS>

  • @serenaxo84, it's not in my hands yet!  I just placed the order, hahahahaha.  BUT once I get it in the mail, I'll let you know.  I did quite a bit of research and even found a comparison website (wildbird vs sakura bloom).  Crossing my fingers!  It's way cheaper!

@annabenanna thanks!!! I really wanted a Sakura bloom but really liked the price of the Wildbird!
  • I have never gotten the flu vaccine before and I've never gotten really sick (so according to you ladies, not the flu! and when I have been really sick and they've tested me for flu, it's always been negative). But I got it this time. It wasn't any trouble since I was at the doctor's anyway and they had a syringe ready right there. Got the TDAP the same way (although I probably would have gone out of my way for both based on pregnancy).

I did read something recently that said that the flu vaccine given to pregnant women had been shown to reduce the occurrence of flu-like illnesses in their babies. So that made me feel like I made the right choice. I don't know how tru it is, though.

  • My biggest 'accent' thing is the pronunciation of Aunt. In CT we always said Aunt and never knew there was a different way to say it. Then we moved to PA and they say 'ant'. It is a constant struggle between families because my dh automatically says ant but when we are talking about my aunts, I correct him! Then I try to say 'ant' when talking about his family but it still comes out aunt 95% of the time. I hate the 'ant' pronunciation!
  • Oh but the words in PA!! Like @Alikvasnok mentioned 'crick', roof pronounced like the sound a dog makes (ruff), and just so many more. It took us a while to get over the surprise when someone said a 'new' word.

Haha and in that vein, our first year here we couldn't understand why we got the Monday after Thanksgiving off, only to find out it was the first day of Deer season. That gave us a chuckle. So many kids were absent from school to go hunting that every school in our area gets that day off.

Re: Grammar - where I grew up people would always say "so don't I." Instead of "me too" or "so DO I."  Made me stabby.
@Alikvasnok not quite a double negative but your post reminded of that.

So funny you mention this bc I call my mom's sister 'ant' Darlene but when I speak about that relationship in general, I speak about my aunt. No clue why I say it that way
  • @maf9866, I have always used "ant". It always seemed to me that "aunt" was too formal for family, and "auntie" was the high class woman who turned her nose up at the less than fortunate.
  • @maf9866 lol! 1st day of deer season off! Yup! You must be in PA!!!

  • @bnsmith85 that is really interesting how it comes out two different ways! I wonder why that is.

@AshleyGemini24 I will admit that when my husband tries to say aunt it is painful because it's almost like the only way he can say it is if it comes out 'formal' but then he will admit that it does not sound formal or too hoity toity when I say it. There must be something to pronouncing it differently if it's not the way you were taught to say it.

  • Can't remember if I've used this for a previous FFFC but it's relevant so I'll use it now. I cannot free hand a French manicure to save my life, but I usually try and paint as quickly and neatly as possible and then grab my clean up brush fast before my clients have too much time to notice how the polish is going on..... unless my client is a total B. Then I slap it on as messy as possible and take my sweet time so I can enjoy watching them have a mini panic attack while they wonder if I'm going to leave it like that or not.

Hampden is amazing at Christmas! And they put an open air ice skating rink in the harbor. Our ritual is 34th street for lights and hot cocoa, harbor for ice skating and then Fells for drinks. Baltimore gets a bad rap but it's such a great city.

  • @krzyriver my fffc is I hate a French manicure. and on a pedicure it's even worse.
  • @mrszoess I love painting them, I'm not super crazy about the actual look of them unless they're done a very specific way. French pedis are just silly and most people do NOT have nice enough toenails for them. Lol.

  • @krzyriver idk how you do your job. I can't with feet. I apologize to my girl every time I go. also random question: too early for fall colors? I go tm and im afraid this may be it before the baby
  • I'm guilty for getting French manicures on my nails... It just lasts longer and I can make them work with everything and not get a fill for 3 weeks. I love colors but I hate when they grow out. And I would never do French on my toes. I do agree with that!!

  • @mrszoess You get used to it very quickly. There's nothing I haven't seen at this point. Lol. Normally people try to squeeze in one last summer color around this time, but I've actually had quite a few people choose fall colors this week. I think people are sick of summer this year. And if you think it could be your last one, pick something you'll be happy with since it might be a second before you can change it. So go for those fall colors if you want!

  • I'm still a sucker for a French on my toes! And pink and whites will forever look classy to me.
  • @sportiegrl1213 @MRSCORKER Lol! French is still very much in style for both hands and feet, so you guys are good. I'm just super judgey cause I'm tired of painting a perfect French on yellow toenails. Or painting a French on oval fingernails. I'm super picky about French. Lol

  • Super dumb question @krzyriver but how are you doing pedicures pregnant? Like do you prop their feet way up? It's so uncomfortable for me to lean forward so that's why I wonder.

I cannot WAIT to take this baby to Hampden for the lights!
  • @OrangeEv Yeah, the foot rest comes up higher. It's for when we scrub the bottoms of clients' feet, but I keep it up the whole time now. It's incredibly difficult to work on their nails that way tho because it puts they're foot at a slant. So I have to keep reminding them to keep their foot flat or kind of pull their toes down so I can see. I also have to roll my stool around the base of the bowl a lot to get a good angle and lean pretty far over their foot if I still can't get it. Getting up and down from those short stools with my tray full of nail supplies is interesting too. So basically it's awful and I'm so glad I'm almost done. Lol

  • @mrszoess and @MRSCORKER y'all are a crazy! French pedicures all day long! Seriously... It's pretty much the only thing I get.
And @krzyriver... I actually prefer it when someone just paints on the white then cleans it up vs trying to make a perfect line free hand. It looks so much better that way!
  • @bnsmith85 Agreed, which is why I've never bothered to try it freehand. I'm such a perfectionist anyway, I'll always want to clean it up with my brush. So I'd rather paint it smooth and get the color even and worry about the smile line afterwards.

  • all this grammar and accent talk... ahh... My mom grew up around Boston, and then I grew up about an hour away from Boston though I don't feel like I ever developed the heavy Boston accent that she had. I moved to Cali for a couple years and Iowa/Minnesota for a couple years and developed probably the most normal/plain accent ever. No other American's who come to TZ can guess where I am from.

However my mom left me a voicemail the other day for the first time in a LONG time and I could not stand how Boston her accent was! I was left wondering if she always sounded like that, and if I ever sounded like that? It was terrrrrrriibbble!

Aww, I grew up in Pittsburgh but my parents are from Eastern PA/Jersey so I really miss hearing the accent! I have always spoken completely accent free but I definitely say jagger bush and occasionally refer to a reckless driver as a jagoff. Also, pop is the ONLY acceptable term for a carbonated beverage!!

  • I've lived in Oklahoma my entire life, but I don't really have an accent. I'm a huge grammar nerd too. I do say "pop" instead of soda though.
  • @krzyriver what natural nail shape do you like best? I am lucky and have strong long nails but get so mad when I get a mani and they square them off. I prefer the more natural shape.
  • @serenaxo84 You've totally made my morning because I love talking about nails. Lol. I prefer what we call squoval, which is a squared off nail that is rounded at the corners. Most nails naturally grow that way (or close to it), so you're doing the least amount of filing to create the shape, which is ideal. It's also very forgiving if you've broken a nail because rounding out the corner a little more can usually hide that. Now some techs will still create a very square look and just take the points off the ends, which I don't care for. Others will round the whole nail out more while still keeping that straight edge. Everyone has a different idea of what looks nice, so don't be afraid to ask your tech to soften the shape more if that's what you want. Here's a couple pics (and I'm on mobile so they're huge):
This last one is my own hand. The pinky and pointer are rounder because I had chipped them. The others are a little more square, which I don't like as much, but my weak nails tend to hold up better if I keep them a teeny bit more square.

  • @krzyriver I like the shape of your nails and the French mani nails! The first picture is too square for me! I feel like my nails are real so I don't want them to look fake! So I might be on that square oval train too!

I I was doing the gel manicures for a while during my last pregnancy but they really broke down my nails! So now I just tend to do a regular mani when I go in with a light color because I feel like those don't chip as fast!
  • @serenaxo84 Glad you like them! I'm not a fan of the first picture either. You're right, square nails look fake and totally defeat the purpose of a natural mani. So be sure to correct your tech if they're idea of squoval is too square for you. Or take the pictures and show them exactly how you want them shaped.

I can't wear gel polish for long periods of time because it dries my nails out and they're already so thin. But ask if your salon has a weekly polish. That white polish I'm wearing is called VinylLux and it lasts a good 7-10 days for me but is gentle on my nails. I don't know how well other weekly brands hold up, but they might be worth trying if your salon has them.
