Breastfeeding

Re: Breastfeeding

  • @entropicallyfavored thank you for letting me know all the ways you worked your clog out. I did the pretty much all of that and I think it's gone. The dangle nursing was entertaining for DH.

@jkershaw2013 I think my mastitis was caused by over supply, overactive letdown, and block nursing. I was trying really hard to not pump and let the supply even itself out. I had oversupply with my son too, but I thought it was caused by pumping too soon. I guess it wasn't.

@caitlinj187 I had a couple pea sized lumps in my breasts PP last pregnancy. My OB sent me to see a general surgeon who sent me to have an ultra sound, and it turned out to be cysts that cleared by themselves. I noticed one again PP this pregnancy but it's already cleared.

  • Thanks @KJ1416! Im hoping it's something like that and clears on its own.
  • My LO eyes get big, he starts breathing a little heavier then waves his arms up and shakes them and shakes his head, he does all of this even when I put the nipple directly in his mouth. At first thought he maybe wanted to find it himself, but I don't think that's it anymore. Anyone else experiencing this? Or baby just acting a bit excited, I'm not sure what's going on.

With DS1 I joked that it was like playing mini golf trying to get the nipple in his mouth. Arms would be going like a windmill and his mouth would be opening and closing. It stopped after a few weeks.
Lol. I kept saying "calm down it's right here I promise!" But I'm glad it's normal for them to get excited
  • As I was checking out at Buy Buy Baby today I seen some lactation cookies at the counter,  I thought what the heck & bought one. (The oatmeal kind I hate chocolate chip cookies)  When I got in the car I decided to eat it, omfg!!! It tasted like a bar of soap, I screamed what is this & immediately started crying! (Hormones) I checked the expiration date,  it was still good,  I asked another mom who I also seen purchase one she said it tasted fine/normal to her.

Moral of my story, I won't try that mess again. Smh.
  • Dh tried to buy me those lactation cookies. I'm glad I put my foot down I was so not interested! I was thinking we seem to be moderately successful at this breast feeding thing, let's not mess with it...

I'm really struggling to figure out pumping. I kinda hate it. It hurts, it takes forever, and I feel like I get a lot less.

I need to figure it out, since I am headed back to work soon...

  • @MrsEWilson wait you don't like chocolate chip cookies??!!

You did a good thing putting your foot down. Also, I'm in the se boat with you trying to figure out pumping. It does takes forever and it's hard to have patience because your wondering if your supply is low or if it's the machine or if your just doing it wrong. It's very frustrating.

I talked to a lactation consultant today. I didn't know I was supposed to pump as many times as he eats and compressions help as well....even with that it's still slow. I decided I'll just turn on a show to make the time go by faster.
  • I make my own lactation cookies and they are soooo good!! I can post the recipe if you guys want.

     Oh, please do!!  :)
  • I've been trying to make sure I'm drinking enough water but I'm not sure I'm getting enough, I'm really thirsty most of the time.

How much water is everyone drinking? Are you just drinking when you're thirsty or a set amount?

  • @ramoseecology I've mostly just kept a water bottle with me at all times and try to drink when he feeds. As long as I'm filling it up at least 3-4x a day, I figure I'm good.
  • @AliKay20 That's awesome! I guess milk supply is greatest between 1 and 5 am.

And I haven't taken this yet, but if I need a boost in supply I will be trying UpSpring Milk Flow. It has Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle. There's a powder drink mix form and capsule form. Bed Bath and Beyond online has the drink mix and you can buy it with their 20% off coupons. (Milkmaid tea is also at BB&B!)

  • @AliKay20 - I massage my boobs the entire time I pump. It definitely ups my output.
  • Thanks @caitlinj187. I haven't been able to get much when I pump so I was wondering if I was way behind in water intake, it sounds like I'm on target though.

  • It doesn't happen regularly but once in a while, DD will just not take my nips. Boobs are full but not too full that she would get overwhelmed. She latches for a minute then unlatches and shakes her head like she's searching for my boob again but once it's actually in front of her, she just won't take it.

When this happens, I hold her upright and try to burp her. Often times, her fussiness while feeding means something needs to come up or down. Instead, she starts sucking on her hand.

I don't get it. My boobs are slightly offended.
  • @AliKay20 my LO does that when I'm engorged. I pump and then he will eat. Even though they don't feel too full to you, maybe they are for her?
But I know last night Levi was doing that ti me. He cried, acted hungry, but refused to latch. It was strange and the only time it's happened.
  • I think breastfeeding is the reason I lost all my baby weight quickly, but now I'm thinking it's also going to be the reason I'll gain weight too! I've been eating so much lately, and lots of unhealthy snacks. I can't stop myself

Same.  I've had 15 more pounds to go now since 3 weeks pp.

@AliKay20 DS does this too. It is my left boob typically, which has a crazy letdown. I'm pumping it now bc he refused to take it after our 2 am feeding. He loves sucking his hands!

@entropicallyfavored and @Stephanie7693 I have stalled out with about 8 pounds left. With DD I never lost the last 5 pounds bc we breastfed until I was 2 months pregnant with this baby. My body seems to hold on to a little extra despite my healthy attempts. I've been eating like crazy recently but am going to stock the house with healthy stuff this weekend. I'm a terrible snacker.

  • I've also stalled out at about 8lbs above my PP weight. With DS1, it wasn't until I stopped breastfeeding at 6 months that I finally lost the last 5lbs. My body definitely holds on to a little extra while I'm still breastfeeding.

  • Breastfeeding makes me so hungry too! Lots of snacking going on over here
  • So I just read this article about breastfeeding blues on my Facebook breastfeeding support group. Just when I was maybe in the clear of crazy hormonal shifts .. apparently when you wean from breastfeeding oxytocin shifts can cause "breastfeeding blues" at least I have time before that happens but thought I'd share for y'all to be aware of the possibility.

This happened to me when DS1 starting eating more solids around 8/9 months. I just felt extremely out of control and like I wasn't helping myself let alone able to be a good mother/wife/employee. I started seeing a therapist and quit my job and things started getting better. The lactation consultant who runs the support group at my hospital was the one who diagnosed me and pointed me in the right direction. I went in to a meeting and just started crying. I had no idea about this being a thing!
  • @Curls919 it was so strange to me, the first time DH gave LO a bottle I felt my heart break a little. I was like omg she doesn't need me! I love breastfeeding, I feel so bonded to her. She's had a few bottles (4 weeks old) and I'm okay with it now. But I wasn't expecting to be kind of upset with her taking a bottle! DH says he enjoys giving her a bottle every once in a while because it helps him bond. That makes me happy  :)
  • @AliKay20 that's awesome! I also have low supply issues but pump what i can. I will try massaging and early morning tomorrow!

I got it from reading this article:

I cried when DH gave DD her first bottle! Not sure if it was the bottle or thinking about going back to work or what,  but it was definitely emotional.

  • Are you offering both breasts at every feed or one? I have always done one as my LO seemed full after that, but lately I've offered both and he seems to be ok with both too. So now I'm wondering if I should always be giving him both? He's gained lots of weight off of one breast so I'm not sure if both would be over feeding?
  • @squishy0511 I had the exact same question and asked a LC at my breastfeeding support group. I was only offering one for a while and was worried that I should be offering both. My LO was definitely getting overfilled with both (tons of spit up, wasn't keeping much down) so I switched back to just one. He is gaining plenty of weight with me just giving him one, so I decided that I should just do what works for us.
  • @squishy0511 How long is your LO nursing? Our pediatrician said to cut DS off after 20 minutes, and I find that that's a good limit... any longer and he has milk dribbling out like he's overflowing. I only feed from one side per feeding, but that's just because he never comes of on his own within that 20 minutes, and I have a bit of an oversupply. If he did happen to come off on his own within the first 5-15 minutes, I would go ahead and offer the other side.

If you switch brests during a feeding, I think you just need to be careful that he's draining the first breast so he gets the hindmilk, prior to offering the second.
  • With my low supply my LO has always ate from both. If she goes a long stretch at night and I'm engorged she will empty one and I pump the other. Then next feed start with one I pumped previously.

  • I've only been feeding on one side - my LO will only eat for 5-10 mins total, and seemed to spit up more and get more air (lead to more gas) when I was offering both.  She must just eat really fast.
  • DD typically passes out after just one side and she also eats for 5-10 mins. If she wakes up and wants more whether it's 30 mins or 3 hours later I will put her in the other side.

  • Hey Guys i need some help! My LO is 4 weeks old and has been really good about eating from both breasts at each feeding and usually does a 20 minute ish feeding and seems very content after. The last two days she has been refusing the second breast and getting very upset with me when i try and offer it to her. She still seems content MOST of the time but this afternoon/evening she's been fussy after both feedings and neither feeding lasted longer than 10 minutes. Diapers are good, latch is good and naps are good. My husband keeps wanting to give her a bottle to make sure she's "getting enough" but this hurts my feelings and makes me feel like all our progress over the last few weeks isn't getting us anywhere. Is this normal? am i doing something wrong? Im a FTM so I feel like i have no idea whats going on with her and if I'm giving her what she needs.
  • @steff226 if it makes you feel any better, I've only been feeding on one side for an average of 7 mins, 6-7 times a day.  I was worried that she wasnt eating enough but she was having all of the wet diapers and seemed happy.  I asked my pedi today at our one month appointment and she basically said she thought the baby would let me know if she needed more.  We're on our growth curve though.  Maybe give your pedi a call before you change anything?  Maybe she's just gotten more efficient?
  • @steff226 What @KMeredith82 said. Also, if you call pedi ask about coming in for a weighted feed. Weigh baby pre and post feeding. Or just doing a weight check.
