@bookhousegirl this was happening to us while we were in the hospital. The nurse reccomended a pacifier, and honestly it has made a huge difference. I think some of the cluster feeding is sucking for soothing, but then like you said he both gets overfull, and spits (which he never does)
Yeah, I think the pacifier would have helped last night. We tried that this evening, since he was acting hungry after an hour and a half of cluster feeding and it worked. Thanks for the suggestion!
I've been eating dried apricots for snacks and oatmeal bars from the kind company. Both are supposed to help with supply and are easy to eat one handed.

Idk how some of you do this but I totally gave in and had DH feed baby A formula tonight. My nips are raw pink. Tender to the touch. I put a ton of nip butter but I always end up getting some on my nursing pads since it takes forever to dry up.

So I am going to introduce bottles tomorrow. I have no idea how much to give my LO in a bottle! The only time we've used a bottle is to supplement after feedings, and that was only a couple days the first week. I have no idea how much he eats. Any idea how much a 4 week old typically takes/ where to start? I know I can pump about 2 to 2.5 oz from one breast in the morning (the one he doesn't nurse on), and close to an ounce on the other after he nurses (first thing in the morning after a long stretch of sleep) but I've read he can get more milk than the pump.

But nipple shells. I liked the medela ones. They are little domes for your nips and they keep them from rubbing against your bra.

I've been giving 2oz in bottles. When DS1 started daycare at 3 months he only took 3oz at a time.

Formula isn't bad to give your nips a break but you should be pumping to replace that feeding if you want to keep your supply up.

How big is he? The usual rule is 2.5 oz per day per pound. I'd try starting with 2 oz in a bottle, although our 10 lb 2.5 week guy averages 2.5-3 oz a feed, 9 feeds in a 24 hour period.
Is anyone else dealing with a messy eater? Little guy ends up covered in it every time I feed him. He's got a good latch, he just take little breaks to smear milk all over both of us.
Thanks ladies. He's somewhere between 7.5 to 8 lbs right now. I think I will start with 2oz and if he wants more he can nurse. I don't plan on leaving him until Friday, so hopefully we will have it figured out by then

Yes. All the time! And if it's the middle of the night I try and feed with limited light. So when I wake up in the morning she has dry milk crusties all over her face. #momfail

@Allisun85 Levi was super messy when we used the shield. Now that we are done with it the mess is pretty minimal. Mornings are always messy though because I'm so engorged.
My already low supply is half of what it was before my little follow up surgery Sunday... Like not even pumping an ounce. I'm hoping it's just temporary. Not sure I'll have the motivation to spend 20 min 8-9 times a day (how often baby currently eats) to only be able to pump 1/4 of the volume of what he eats. I'll keep trying and give it a week and see where we are. Frustrating!

@Allisun85 Yes yes yes to a messy eater! At night, she will wait until milk is shooting out, unlatch, and rub her face all around. I end up soaked by the end of the feeding.
DD was 8lbs10oz at birth, 7lbs 11oz at discharge, and at 4 days appointment down another ounce and had lost an entire pound! Last night she slept for 4.5 hours and I was really nervous because we had a follow up weight check this morning. She was still down six ounces at her two week appt (3 weeks tomorrow), but her doctor said since she was consistently gaining she wouldn't worry unless she was still down at three weeks. She was 8lbs 11.2oz this morning!! And we got our first long stretch & now I don't have to stress if we are blessed with another one
Pumping question... Anyone have trouble with hands free pumping? I felt like the first few days I could kick back have my hands free but now I'm struggling to keep the pump on my breast while its on and it will lose suction. Wondering if I need a larger part now that my boobs are ginormous. I'm using the medela pump in style.
Does bleeding pick up for you if cluster feeding? Baby has been nursing pretty much non stop all afternoon and I had quite a bit more blood. Has this happened to anyone else? I can't remember if it is normal.

It is normal because BFing causes your uterus to contract. So that can cause your bleeding to increase.

Do you use a pumping bra? I have to use one to hold the pump in place if I want to do hands-free. There is a Medela one at Target in the same section as the pump supplies.

I made a hands free pumping bra out of an old sports bra... I just cut two holes in the front, it works great.
You may need bigger parts, though, @ShawnaLynn83. If your breast size has changed significantly, that could definitely affect how your pump fits/works.
Does anyone have recommendations on nursing tank tops? My husband picked one up at target today, and it's like I'm wearing a freaking swimsuit (not very flattering or, oddly, supportive since I'm assuming that's the reason it fits the way it does). Are they all like that? I was hoping for something more comfortable, and it's going to be at least another few days post c section before I can go try items on myself.
@annareid81 I like the ones from target that are labeled "basics", not sure the brand, maybe medela? I find them to be slimming, which is great. I actually wore them last time way past when I was nursing bc I liked them so much.
Thanks, @KMeredith82! I'm ordering one as we speak! Thank goodness for in store pick up, by the way--I can just picture my poor husband wandering the clothing area searching aimlessly!
@Duffgurl so far just freezing 2 ounces in bottles from milk savers, just used for quick snacks on outings to get through the hour without having to stop and nurse. With DD1 I would freeze 3-4 ounces in bags, she never took more than 4 ounces per bottle
@Duffgurl I freeze in 2-3oz bags. Make sure you rotate it out, though, because at this stage your milk is changing to meet LO's needs. I do 1-2 pumped bottle feedings a day (I pump to make up for it), and I use milk from the freezer and then freeze what I pump.
My couch has a permanent indentation of my arse following the past 2-3 days of constant nursing. Today I have been able to lay LO down a total of MAYBE 2 hours max otherwise she's been on the boob. I feel so bad for DD1 (3.5 years) because I haven't been able to do anything besides nurse lately. I'm looking forward to her going to preschool just so she can have friends to play with.
does anyone else have a LO that nurses very quickly? I am already dealing with what seems to be an oversupply issue, and she also has been spitting up some, so I've been trying to get her to slow down and burp her every few mins. She will still be done in under 10 mins, sometimes closer to 5. She has only nursed for longer a handful of times. Because of this, I end up only feeding her from one side usually, which isn't helping with the engorgement issue. I am a STM, and my first def nursed for longer and usually on both sides.
She seems like she's getting a lot when she eats, and she's having enough diapers. She'll go 2-3 hours between sessions during the day, and anywhere from 1.5-4 at night.
My first also needed a shield, so that probably slowed down the flow a little, just seems odd to me that things are starting out so differently this time.
@KMeredith82 Right there with you! Getting peanut to stay on 10-15 minutes is a marathon. He's typically off by 8, although sometimes he'll throw a fit if i sit him down after. Never right away though. He likes to wait 5 min or so until after I've burped him, changed his diaper, put the girls away, then lay back down to bed. That or when I get ready to eat. Started pumping to take engorement away. Also leaking a lot. I'm grateful for the milk, but worried I'll lose it if his feeding schedules don't consistentize.....(Yes i made up that word, I know).
