    Great thread!

My contribution is that I read that when men ejaculate, the very first bit contains the most and the best sperm. The rest has less sperm but does apparently have other stuff aimed at keeping other men's sperm out

this is where I got it from: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2015/05/150526085347.htm

@antoto guess who will be starting her vitamin D pills early this year? living in the north (read: 9am - 2:30pm sunlight in December) and I didn't take any last year...cue: "maybe that's why I didn't get pregnant last winter"

ETA: Disclaimer: I realize vitamin D overdose is dangerous and willy nilly taking vitamins is not to be taken lightly...everyone who lives in my country of residence is encouraged to take vitamin D supplements in the fall and winter at least, though, and I meant the above statements about starting early and not getting pregnant last year as a joke... I will not be going crazy, because that's just dumb.

@motherofdragons @aurora1973 I heard that coconut oil can build up and not clear itself out properly, so I was too scared to try it when I started looking for sperm-friendly lubes

@Buthayna Interesting. I hadn't heard that. Off to fall into a google rabbit hole!

Edited to add: that just seems odd to me because our vaginas are the ultimate self cleaning ovens. Ok, off to Google now!

MotherofDragons That's what I thought too...but never ended up trying it because I was scared enough haha.  We also kind of lucked out in this regard and get away without needing anything extra to help out, which is seemingly rare judging by how much it's talked about on here.

  • I'm not putting my source in because I am the source LOL. But in all realness :

Straight off my fertility clinics website.

  • @antoto you forgot to mention cigarettes/nicotine. Also, apparently sperm takes three months to develop so any changes DH makes today supposedly will only benefit the sperm three months from now :/ (my DH just quit smoking, thankfully, but dayummmm)
  • When I was doing research because I thought DH was the problem for us, I found a study that said vitamin c is very good for sperm production. The study done showed that it could increase sperm 112%-120% if taking 200mg or 1000mg daily.  I also have him taking a zinc supplement on top of that too. Although now that we have the results of his SA back (even though I haven't talked to the dr) it seems it is really working or not needed...lucky for us I guess. But he is still taking them anyways just to be sure.

  • I cant believe how much I have learned from this!

my one thing, its really for the H's out there, but if they commute by biking, its best to stand more than sit.  It can really squish things around. My DH bikes every day and has started to make sure to stand more, especially when going over bumps.

@eggplantface how much preseed do you use? Actually, for anyone who uses preseed how much do you use? I see in the threads that many ladies use preseed so I just looked up what it is. I'm definitely going to use it next cycle! H might think it's weird, but I'm still going to use it.

My fact is about preseed: it was invented by a woman sperm physiologist!

    Edited to add the link:https://www.preseed.com/How-Pre-Seed-Can-Help/What-is-Pre-Seed.aspx
  • I love this thread. @antoto, I'm going to send that study to my DH because he does this all the time. I had heard of it but I didn't realize it was backed by research

  • So excited to come out of work and see so many fun facts! I'm totally in teacher / learning / nerd mode and teaching kids how to cite evidence? Can you tell? Haha.

It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most...not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes... There's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know! *ZBB*

  • Whenever anyone mentions concerns about age and pregnancy, I always link to this article.

    In particular:
The widely cited statistic that one in three women ages 35 to 39 will not be pregnant after a year of trying, for instance, is based on an article published in 2004 in the journal Human Reproduction. Rarely mentioned is the source of the data: French birth records from 1670 to 1830.

The article was written by the author of The Impatient Woman's Guide to Getting Pregnant, which I love as she looks at the actual scientific research behind most common TTC things and tells you whether they're worthwhile or not.
the impatient Womens guide to getting pregant is a great companion to TCOYF :) I highly recommend it to those that haven't read it
  • This is fantastic. Thanks all of you. I read Emily Oster's Expecting Better but want to check out The Impatient Woman's Guide too.

Also I have a reaction to Preseed so I may try coconut oil instead. We have just been going without. Thanks!

  • I really like getting all this information but now I'm thinking too many drinks and phone in the front pocket is CLEARLY our problem.  So it's that creating more stress thus making it more difficult as well? I cant help but think after 8 months there must be a clear reason why.  It can't possibly be bad karma.
  • @leekat14 Yeah... This has been a little stressful along with helpful. I just sent the NIH article about cell phones and sperm to DH and he immediately said he wasn't going to move his phone because he knows our lack of pregnancy is because of my short luteal phase. You KNOW it? WTF.
