  • So I am working on packing my day to day diaper bag. I haven't packed one for awhile now, and don't know if I am forgetting anything important or not. I have:
    -6 diapers
    -pack of wipes
    -diaper cream
    -2 big receiving blankets
    -nursing cover
    -nursing pads
    -nipple cream
    -pads for me
-a spare sleeper (not sure how big he is going to be so I'll add more later)

anythjng else I need? It didn't feel like I had much in there compared to my other kids. Maybe a 3rd time mom thing I don't over pack like I used to, but I don't want to forget anything important.

my baby hospital bag is similar, but I am using separate bags cause that one has a bit more in it.

    @Schell2013 Vaseline?
I have some in my hospital bag, I only use it once the meconium passes. After that unless baby has a rash I leave them with nothing. I change them extremely often and use corn starch at night.

  • Ummm... What's the Vaseline for?

We use a lot of aquaphor. While the penis heals you use a lot of aquaphor! And I still use it on my DS as he is in diapers still. Sometimes under his penis gets red, I think from being squished in the diaper so I throw a glob on, sometimes I use it on his bum when it's a little red. Sometimes I throw it on his lips because he gets a binky rash! Stuff is great!

My sister used it a lot on her little girls bum because it acts as a barrier cream for moisture. Even if you change diapers all the time, some babies skin can be a little more sensitive!
  • @bnsmith85 I have heard some moms say that the first BM can be really sticky so they will use Vaseline on the tush before to make clean up easier.
  • Vaseline helps clean up the meconium!

That's what our L&D nurse told us at our prenatal class.

  • So just put it on when they're first born and continue to apply with diaper changes until then?
  • @bnsmith85 that is what I'm assuming - put a barrier between their skin and the black sticky poop, but I'm a FTM so maybe I'm wrong.

  • @LauraPCOS I definitely stole 2 or three of the hospital ones.  I think most people do. Those ones are nice for swaddling when they're tiny. Also the nurse tried to get me to take the really gross one with all the afterbirth on it home to our dog, but I opted for one with just the scent
  • @gatorMom2014 funny they told us we weren't allowed to take them.  It's all good though, I swear I have 30 receiving blankets

  • I don't take any hospital linens (blankets, hats, sleepers) with me. The reason is (may not be the same everywhere) but they are donated by people to be used at mine. THEY DO NOT GIVE US FUNDING for them. That surprised me, but my friend who is a L&D nurse said its like that at most places. Same with the hats and sleepers they have to use when you're there. So when people take them home it kinda ticks me off cause I've donated stuff so people can have the convienance of not having to pack and use their own that they have to wash when they get home and they're exhausted.
So please think and maybe even ask about this before taking them home.

@LauraPCOS yes just throw some on until the black poop stops. That stuff is literally like tar. Super sticky.

  • I can't remember what thread it was but @annabenanna, we learned tonight that the state of MD requires the eye drops/ointment. It's the law so that might be something to check on in your state.

This is hospital-dependent.  Our hospital gives you a hat to take home (one of those pink and blue striped ones), but the blankets and sleepers belong to the hospital.  That makes sense to me because reusing those hats on baby after baby seems weird.  Also, when I make baby hats to donate, I'm really expecting them to go to one baby, not be used by multiple babies.  If you aren't sure, you might want to search your hospital website for a packing list.  It might tell you what the hospital provides.  (I just Googled "[hospital name] birth center packing list" and found a list of what they provide (sleepers for the hospital stay, a hat to wear home) and what you need to bring (blankets, an outfit to wear home and sock or booties).)

It would be depending on the hospital but I am sure they aren't like hey take 3 receiving blankets home with you. It's stealing completely in my eyes and not from the greedy hospitals, it's actually from the birthing ward that solely depends on donations from generous average people to keep a full rotation of these things going.
I never really thought about hats! I didn't take any for my kids cause it was warm out when I had them. So can't entirely speak much about that topic.

  • We packed a hat and some socks (that we'll use as mittens since our sleepers have footsies) cause I didn't even think they give you a temporary hat or sleepers.  I just knew they lend you a swaddle blanket, but they always feel so scratchy to me which is why I brought my own as well

  • @schell2013 I appreciate your point.  I didn't think much of it because the nurse was encouraging me to take them.  Maybe the policy or funding at my hospital was different.  I told them a number of times I did not want the one with the afterbirth on it, and they still put it in a bag and put it with my stuff.  I think it was two, not three, if that matters.  I do treasure having those blankies though.  This feels borderline defensive, so I'm going to stop explaining it--I just had no idea this was an offensive thing.  The more you know! :)
  • i have never heard of the stuff in the hospital being donated.

Me either! It's all the standard looking stuff here so I assume they order it. The pink and blue hats, the white blankets with pink and blue stripes, white onesies. And they give you all the post partum stuff you could need before you leave. So I have packed an extra empty bag.

Me either! I took 1 hospital blanket home, the hats and the sleeper shirt. The hat was literally a piece of cloth that was cut and tied at the top with medical tape.

we were encouraged to take everything we used. But this time around I will check again. Keeping the shirt and hat were really just FTM emotions!

i also just found out my hospital still has a nursery! I was surprised because they really advocate for rooming in and most hospitals in the area have totally done away with the nursery. My nurse told me it was because they want moms to have time to heal at night/sleep.

we "had" to send DS to the nursery twice because I kept falling asleep nursing him in the middle of the night and that's a huge no no! I could have advocated for him to stay, but they really would take him for maybe 2 hours and bring him back as soon as he woke up.
  • My cousin's daughter's girl scout troop did a service project knitting tiny hats for NICU babies (and matching larger ones if they had a toddler sibling so they didn't feel left out) but they were very specifically for preemies and NICU babies and clearly donated/hand made. The others at the hospital (the pink/blue hats and foot print blankets) are ordered in bulk from the hospital but are a standard size, which is why they aren't great for the little babies. I've never heard of a hospital only having donated items exclusively! Perhaps it's a regional thing?
  • Also hospitals charge $8 for one Advil, so most people assume that they're paying out the wazoo for anything that's in the room, baby blankets included. (Although is a baby blanket the baby equivalent of a hospital gown? Because I guess I wouldn't take one of those home:tongue: Good to know that may not always be the case. I'll have to check.

I was racking my brain because I remember reading a story about those baby blankets years ago. Here is the link https://www.npr.org/2011/07/22/138575125/born-in-the-usa-this-blanket-might-look-familiar
But not to discount what @Schell2013 had said I just thought it was interesting.

  • I do live in Canada which I why I mentioned it may not be the same across the board. Most things aren't. But yeah it's kinda dumb. But by all means if the nurse says it's fine it probably is. But our hospital birthing ward is always always needing stuff cause too many people take too much home.
