@annabenanna it does seem very like a very unique technique to say the least. I am curious to know how much studies and research have been done on it to know just "how" beneficial it is or isn't. Although a lot of things such as this are typically things that maybe do or don't have benefits.

@annabenanna, we are skipping the eye ointment because we both don''t have any STIs and if we did, I think I would know by now from my monthly or now bi weekly peeing in a cup.
We are doing the vitamin k since we are having a boy and that helps with the clotting of the blood and is also naturally found in the body. We are waiting to do the hep b with our pediatrician.
@annabenanna my grandmother is a neonatal nurse and has been for quite some time, hippy as she can be, and has really seen it all. So i tend to at least give her advice a listen before completely shrugging her off - she highly highly advocates for the vitamin K shot. If only for the clotting of the blood for the baby. Like, she thinks it's dumb for someone not to give vitamin K to the baby when its sole purpose is to help, lol. We will be giving our girls all 3.
@annabenanna We are doing vitK, delaying eye drops until after the first hour or so of bonding, and not sure on the Hep B (may be delayed if my husband insists).
The vaginal swabbing, as far as I read, can have some drawbacks and is not necessary. I think your baby will get enough of your germs being kissed and cuddled and drinking from your boobs. There is stuff in the nether regions that really it's better *not* for baby to be exposed to as well.
@annabenanna There is NO reason not to do Vitamin K! I posted in why my pregnant self is crying a few weeks ago after reading an article about the consequences of people refusing Vitamin K - basically the number of infant brain bleeds is skyrocketing. According to what I've read (and I haven't yet properly researched it), there is also no real reason to refuse the eye drops. As PP said, it reduces infections across the board and newborns can't see diddly squat anyway, so I don't think it's that invasive to them. I HAVE heard of rubbing the bacteria onto babies' noses and mouths and I understand the reasoning behind it. I have 2 buts. 1. It will take years before there's any good evidence either way because they can't randomly assign babies to treatment groups and the number of confounding variables is huge. Might be an advantage, though probably minimal. However but #2. If you're having a c-section they give you antibiotics, so that would kill any bacteria that may or may not have been beneficial.
I'm definitely doing the eye drops and vaccines, especially the Vitamin K. I get my whooping cough vaccine my next appointment, which is good for my son too.

Yeaaa my DH still needs his too. My parents are giving me a hard time saying that noone needed this back in the day blah blah blah. I'm like if you want to see the baby then get it done. None of our family lives in town really so I feel like a nag making them all get it, but the doc said anyone who will be around the baby those first few weeks should have it and they all plan on visiting when she's born.
Ugh I don't know how they are or what they respond to but, for relatives who we want immunized, I cannot wrap my mind around the resistance - whether outright refusing or lazy procrastinating! Worst case they have a 100* fever for a day and they take a Tylenol and get over it. It's one fucking shot that can save your baby's life if their herd is immune. Sorry just my preg-rage sparked up seeing that any of us have to like beg people to do basic things for our babies' safety. Maybe see if it lights a fire under their ass if you tell them they need to get it done something like 2 weeks before your baby is born otherwise they can't hold him/her or visit you for the first month? Fx they get their act together
I didn't even think of asking my parents or in laws to do this. Especially my mom who is staying with us for 2 months. Not so much worried about my in laws since our son won't be around them as much, well not till I go back to work in January. Come to think of it I would have to ask my niece to get this done too, since she lives with us. Ugh.

Just an FYI about TDAP if your extended family or H's have gotten the shot in the past 10 years, they don't have to get it again. We all got the shot in 2013 and I am the only one that had to get it redone and that was because I am pregnant.

Oh believe me I released the beast on their asses already. I decided to leave out those tiny details
Anyway, my they are just being assholes with no real reason. They are both insured so that's not an excuse they can use.
DH told them last night that they can't see the baby until they get the shot.

Re: TDAP. DH made an appointment to take care of two things 1) asthma meds and 2) TDAL. His doctor said at te appt. "oh there are lots of places you can get that done." And then let him leave without it. Wtf! Is he just supposed to walk into a grocery store and get his vaccination? Of course there are lots of places to get it done. They're called doctors offices and that's why he made an appt with you!
@sjo_thetwins thanks! That is helpful, and makes me less nervous about DH having to miss work for another appt. I knew they did flu shots at pharmacies, but didn't know they offered TDAp. Phew. . I'm still mad at that doctor though for not providing medical care!
@chriscasey33 He *can* just walk into a grocery store and get it - at least, my husband is supposed to stop by the HEB pharmacy to get his. However, you're right, the doctor should have provided the care he went there to get - or at least warned him ahead of time that it wasn't a service they provide (which is stupid if so, but still.)
@chriscasey33@RainMira9e My parents at their doctor visit asked about it, and the doctor actually said that they dont give the shots anymore. It's more expensive for them to carry it and they "don't get paid enough by insurance" to administer it. So they were told to go to Walmart or CVS or something to get it done. I'm sure that is why your doctor did the same with your husband.
Yeah, my mom's OBGYN actually wouldn't give it to her because they don't have enough to give out besides to the preggos. She found out she got one a couple of years ago though so it worked out.

@mizzkbrat the whole medical pricing industry grosses me out. On one hand I'm a scientist so I understand the costs that go into research, development, and testing of drugs. In my new life, I work in state policy and the lobbying that industry does to squash price transparency regulation and legislation makes me so mad. But thank you ladies for te reassurance that my DH is not destined to be a germy, whooping cough carrier when the baby arrives.
@LauraPCOS tetanus, diphtheria, and(?) pertussis. My OB gave me mine during my visit a few weeks ago, and most will suggest SOs or anyone in close contact with the baby to get updates as well.
@Schell2013@Mintz1982 did your OB's give you this TDAP? Or mention about hubby getting it? I know we get vaccinated for it when we're young, but just wondering if we're suppose to get boosters
@LauraPCOS It's recommended that pregnant mamas get theirs regardless of when they last had it because it protects the baby when they are born until they get their own at I think 2 months. I had DH check on his boosters, and the only thing he needed boosted was the tetanus part. I did get mine from my OB, they offered and I had researched it and said yes, since it's a protection for my LO.
Countdown to Baby H! Mommy to Elizabeth (6/18/09), preemie at 34 weeks
@Kaytee1087 I'm in Canada, so I'm not sure why we're not being told to get it done. I'll try to remember to mention it to my OB on Monday which is my next appt.
With DD I got the TDAP in the hospital after she was born, that was in 2012. New recommendations are to get it during third tri so immunity is passed to the baby.
@LauraPCOS I just posted this somewhere else, but in Germany they don't give the TDAP (or anything besides the flu shot) to pregnant women. May be a cultural thing! But I would definitely ask, especially if you haven't had one since you were a kid.
Yeah, I definitely forgot to ever get the TDAP with DS1. This time around I got it, and I asked parents who are coming the first couple months to get it, mostly because the twins will be born in the fall and a bit early, and half my family members work in elementary ed and are around germy kids all day.
@LauraPCOS just adding that's it's important to get the TDAP because an adult can have/carry whooping cough and not know it. To an adult it might not be a big deal but can be deadly to a baby so it's important to get it so that it's not transmitted to LO.
I'm going to mention it at my appointment on Monday. My friend said her doc gave her a whooping cough shot but not DTAP, and another friend that had the same doc as me said she didn't get anything.
After I pick a pediatrician do I have to call them and let them know they've been picked OR do I wait until the baby is born to call and make an appointment? That's assuming they are accepting new patients.

I would call them and ask what their procedure is and to make sure they're accepting new patients. Every office will be different!

I'm thinking we'll go ahead and do all 3. All 3 seem beneficial and not even the eye drops seem harmful.
