Re: Weekly Random (9/4)

  • @AfKash since the studies came out I don't even think my OB would know.  as time goes on experts in this sort of thing will form.
  • Loading the player...
  • Yup, that's what frustrates me about medicine.  One day something is highly recommended, few years later, oops we shouldn't be doing that! But what can you do? Science.

  • @BlondePeanut mine was 9 years ago and I barely made the cutoff!
  • @jlellis603 Be sure to check on how secure the building is. Our dc has auto lock doors and the only way to re-enter without a key is by using the keypad at the front door. They check id on all people that aren't parents who are picking up kids each time. Some facilities have cameras so parents can check on their kids through out the day.

Ask about schedules. Do they feed and change diapers on a schedule, or on demand? Ours is on demand but I did run across a few that only went off a schedule. If your planning to cloth diaper, will they use them too?

When your kid is older do you bring lunches or are they provided? We bring our lunches but they provide snacks and milk.

What is the teacher to student ratio? For older kids ours is 1:6 or 7. Not sure about the infants but I usually see a few girls in there and I think they only have 6 babies.

What about communication? Ours has an auto text system to let us know about closers due to weather by 7am. They also have the calendar for the entire year that shows the days they are closed so you have all year to figure out an alternative.

I can't think of anything else right now but I'll tag you if I think of something to add!

  • @PerraSucia - I remember when they first came out, I delayed it b/c I was like oh hell no to a shot. But then she convinced me years later, which had to be 6-8 years ago. Scary stuff.
  • @PerraSucia thanks for updating your post! there are a lot of sources out there that try to scare people away from vaccines. I got the HPV vaccine and my kids will get it. bc most of my generation has some form and there are no symptoms. this vaccine saves lives. talk to your Dr if you have concerns about risks for your kids.

100% agree. I got the vaccine but they still found I had some evidence of HPV this past year. Luckily it was removed and I should be ok, but I feel better knowing the vaccine helps protect from the more serious forms that can later develop into cancer.

Exactly! I'm glad that I got the vaccine when I did. I work in the dental field and at one of our last seminars they were talking about oral cancer screening and cancer in general. And they are predicting that in the next decade or so a huge number of cancer cases will have stemmed from some sort of HPV. I don't remember exact statistics so I don't want to post incorrect numbers, but it was a scary amount.
  • @mommabean there is no way you could be that much older than me haha the cut off is 26 and that was 9 years ago for me!

@Gretchypoo this particular article was such a bullshit one because they were pretending to be the AAP.  Also, a weird coincidence because this happppened to meeeeee
  • @MrsP052909 thanks a bunch! I feel like we'll be there half an hour longer than our time slot but it's worth it to know everything!
  • @imalwaysme79  I had posted a few on the STM thread.  Below is a copy and paste of what I had put there.

    1. Protocol for others to pick up your kid (in case you're late, etc)
    2. Soothing methods they use (the first in-home person we used relied solely on rocking and feeding- we switched really fast)
    3. What items you need to bring and protocol on bottles etc (some places will only rinse the bottles and send them home to be washed and some will keep your bottles there and wash them after each use, same with bibs, etc)
    4. About cloth diapering if you're interested in it
    5. What the general structure of the days look like (some are very laid back especially at the nursery level and basically just free play all day and others will still basically play all day but will work more at honing skills like practicing ripping paper, etc)
    6. If they have a vacation policy (like after 1 year you can pull your kid out for 1 week without paying the weekly fee)
    7. Fee structure including early drop-offs, late pick ups, any annual fees
    8.  If they provide meals and what kind (more for when they're older)

  • @afkash there are lots of resources to find a doula.  I found mine through a referral service in Los Angeles, but maybe start with www.dona.org.  Some PPO insurances will cover a partial cost of a doula (HMOs will not).  I have a PPO and they will cover partial cost of the doula if it is deemed "medically necessary" by my doctor.  My doctor is on board and will write the letter to insurance that it is medically necessary - so hopefully they cover part of the cost.  However some of the doulas I interviewed did mention that they work on a sliding scale if cost/ability to pay was an issue.
  • @PerraSucia phew! I'm 32. Don't know why I never got it... Maybe because I was already married by the time it was becoming prevalent? Idk.

I got it and I'm older than you lol
  • Thank you so much for the info @MissMerciBeaucoup !! I didn't even know where to start looking (aside from the Google). Nobody I know has used a doula or even a midwife. So that helps a lot!

Also RE: HPV vaccine...I'm 32 and I got it. Perhaps your OBs weren't really pushing them back then?

  • @peachesnbean I think your reveal party sounds awesome! I think most people are fine with the parties until they either get way too AWish and over the top, they become awkward when it's obvious the parents wanted the sex to be the opposite of what they end up with, or they ask for gifts. Sounds like you're avoiding all those faux pas so have a great time and enjoy that cake (honestly who doesn't enjoy an excuse for cake)!

  • I've been creeping on the August, September and October boards. UGH GUYS I'm so jealous of everyone's nurseries. We aren't moving out of the house we are renting and buying our own until the end of May so the baby will be sharing a room with us. Luckily our bedroom is pretty roomy but the dog crate takes up a bunch of space too. Baby will get a whole wall/corner plus the unused dresser in there. My plan is to turn our "dining room" that we never dine in into a play area/reading area. The only issue is finding a gate big enough to put there to keep our crazy dog out... measured it yesterday and I got to the end of my 8 foot measuring tape before I reached the wall....

Check Amazon.  I bought my parents a ten foot gate there for their pups once, so you should be able to find something.

  • This is definitely random...does anyone have any tv series recommendations?! I'm caught up on all my shows and need to find something new to watch! I've watched quite a few...parenthood, true blood, sons of anarchy, boardwalk empire, homeland, just to name a few. :)
  • L Jane - We just got through the first three seasons of Peaky Blinders, which was awesome.  Next, we started up with Penny Dreadful.  Also really was good Stranger Things.  Or, if you're into comic book stuff at all (DH got me into some of the shows), Netflix's Daredevil and Jessica Jones were really well done.  Oooh, and BBC's Sherlock, which is a limited number of episodes but like a mini-movie with each one.

We may watch too much TV.

On Netflix? I've been watching limitless, Graceland, and cutthroat kitchen.

Thanks! Yeah, I don't even think we will do decorations or anything other than keeping fall themed. We will get a scrapbook paper for the baby book for people to cast their votes/well wishes and call it a friggin day.

Thanks @mlrocha @mrsp052909 and @afkash ! I'm going to have to look some of these tonight once kids are all asleep and I need to veg out! I'm a big tv person too...I've watched so many series. We have Amazon Fire which I believe we access out Netflix through.
  • @ljane there was a whole thread on TV awhile back and I got some great suggestions off of it. I started watching Superstore based on someone's suggestions there and it is hilarious!

In other random news, I'm re-watching Grey's Anatomy and Dr. Bailey has the cutest, chubbiest baby in the history of TV. Guys, we're only 5-ish months from having cute chubby babies of our own! Eek!
Yes!!! I recommended superstore!!! I like that show. And you recommended me to watch supernatural. I still haven't had the chance to get season 1 but now that the kids are back in school I'll hopefully have more time for me.

The Walking Dead is pretty awesome and I'm still catching up on OITNB.

DH is currently obsessed with Narcos.

    Congrats @scifichick09 on Team Peen!

  • @scifichick09 congrats on your boy!!
@peachesnbean you should share your chili recipes on the fall food thread-- agree with PP, your sex reveal sounds awesome. I'm not opposed unless they get really AW-y or awkward if the parents wanted a certain sex.
  • One of my best friends is getting married soon and her sisters are throwing her a bachelorette party this Saturday. The more I think about it, the more I don't want to go. I don't want to be a bad friend, but the invite literally says to dress sexy, bring wine, and dollar bills for the strippers.

My sexy clothes don't fit, I couldn't find any "sexy" maternity clothes at the mall, I can't drink wine, and I just don't feel like being around strippers and a bunch of drunk girls when I am going to be completely sober. On top of it all, the venue is an hour away from where I live. I fall asleep by 8 or 9pm most nights and I don't know how I feel about driving home late at night if I am exhausted.

How do I tell my friend I don't want to go? :(

  • I'm with some of the others in that I'd rather have people visit at the hospital than at home.  Mostly because I'm more tired when I get home because I don't have the nurses to help with the baby anymore and I don't want to tidy up for company.  I don't think anyone really pays attention to anything or anyone other than baby when they come over, but I still feel the need to straighten.  Now if they bring food, they are more than welcome to visit. :)

OMG yes this was my biggest issue. I just wanted to straighten up. I hadn't run the vacuum before we left for the hospital and everyone coming in was putting my anxiety into overload!!! This time I'm making sure the house is SPOTLESS or I will die.
