I was also told at our breastfeeding class that they require a paci during circumcision. My best friend said her hospital was the same so she took it out immediately after and put him on the Breast and didn't give him a paci again for about a month. It didn't cause any issues.

Yes I heard the same thing in our breastfeeding class. They said they'll give him a pacifier for the circumcision, and then as soon as they bring the baby to you take it out and put him on your breast for comfort.
Okay so yes for the stool softener - when do I start taking it?
They gave it to me in the hospital with iron and prenatal vitamin and motril with DD1. I, too, have been taking one twice a day on and off this pregnancy because things have slowed down (per midwife).
@Piperella We didn't use overnight diapers with DD until she was in size 3. She didn't pee enough volume before that to need them. I don't think they even make overnight diapers until size 2 or 3.
Wiping a a girl isn't that bad. You just have to wipe out the labia sometimes during really messy poops.
I've given birth twice and haven't pooped while pushing yet. **knocks on wood**
Can I just say this thread is awesome! I would have never thought of half the stuff we've talked about in just 3 pages and yet all the answers have been helpful and supportive (and surprisingly consistent)
I would just like to say, do NOT rely on the pee strips on diapers for poop as well. If you get lucky and your babe isn't a stinker, it is super important to actually check inside the diaper for poop, and frequently! Breast fed babies have very liquidy, seedy poop and if they sit in it too long, that is butt rash city. Not pleasant for anybody involved. That being said, I also believe 2 hours is way too long to wait between checking/changing. If you're in a situation where babe slips a sneaky poo right after you just changed the diaper, he/she could be stuck in that for a while if it goes undetected and I have seen some bad booty gauldings from those instances

I agree with this. Also, a lot of times breastmilk poop doesn't stink, so unless you actually check the diaper you might not know.
My nurse said a BF baby can go up to 10 days without a poop because the body absorbs so much of it, or you can have a BF baby that poops every hour. Is it just me or does this not sound right?
@LauraPCOS we get the stool softeners given to us at the hospital Canadian health care lol you will also get t3s I never used either with for with any of my kids. But it's a self medication package. So don't worry about picking them up to much. Have you not done your pre registration they gave me this low down about stoil softeners and pain relief I was like seriously pills wtf do I look like a drug addict.
@LauraPCOS best fed babies have wet poop honestly my kids pooped after every feeding for a long time then there tiny bodies start to schedule themselves and you can usually figure out when they will go.as for bottle fed there poop is more solid because of all the extra stuff in formula.

I've heard up to 7 days without a poop for breastfed babies. DD was one of the 10 times a day poopers!

Oh, this is good to know ahead of time! We weren't planning on using one, but I think I'll throw one in my bag for this.

I'm sure if they require it, the hospital will provide. That said, I'd bring one just in case. Can't hurt and it doesn't take up much room.... This advice comes to you from a self admitted over-packer
On the subject of what to call privates, my DH's ex told my SS and SD to call their privates by penis and vagina. I don't know, it still creeps me out to hear my SS say vagina and penis. He like runs around the house screaming "penis, vagina". I try not to make a big deal about it, but I will certainly be going a different route for our little dude.
Just to clarify, I didn't mean not to check or change earlier than 2 hours! I was just sharing that at the daycare we changed every 2 hours (we also checked diapers every hour) and they were almost always wet because someone asked if they needed to change the baby after every feeding if they're feeding every 2 hours. I wouldn't recommend waiting longer than 2 hours. Most of the time we could easily smell when one baby pooped but there was the occasional sneaky pooper!

After the first 6 weeks, it can be normal for a BF babe to go up to 10 days without pooping as long as they're passing gas and otherwise happy. Some babies, on the other hand, will poop super regularly the whole time and that is normal for them. Just depends on the babe. Before that 6 week mark, it is important that they go regularly.
@Mintz1982 I sent in my pre-registration (my hospital is doing it by email now) and I didn't even get a confirmation so I am only assuming I'm registered. They didn't mention anything at the prenatal class, only that our pain options during labour (morphine and epidural). I picked up a box anyways, $10 and I had a gift card. But good to know OHIP cares about my poop!
In regards to what to call privates. Child predators normally target kids who call their privates cutesy names. They don't want to go after children who will tell their parents, "so and so touched my vagina/penis". Just something to think about.
A lot of hospitals have changed policy at least where I am from... No more nursery and no pacifiers. With DS 3 years ago we didn't get offered a pacifier... Even when he was screaming hysterics at 3am and wouldn't take my breast.
@bnsmith85 I believe they say 6 months. We have an electric sterilizer and I hand washed bottles so I think I kept using the sterilizer until he was like at least 10 months and then I started putting the bottles in dishwasher.
all of DS1 sippy cups go in the dishwasher. The only thing I still sterilize are binkies. But I use a microwave steam bag.
My friend sterilizes her son's sippy cups (he's 19 months) and always sterilized his bottles. At what point can you just stop sterilizing?
I stopped doing it regularly when DD was about 2-3 months. After that I did it once a week or so. I like the microwave steam bags. At 19 months they are running around licking everything....what is the point? Not like you are going to sterilize your whole house. Let them build their immune system
I don't understand the logistics of when to stop the breastfeeding session and when to swap boobs. When do you know they are done? And if they finish on one boob, does the other boob just get neglected and engorged?

Realistically, let the baby go until they're done on one side then switch. Some signs of "done on this side" are fussiness and restlessness. If a baby is full/done, generally their whole body will relax (you'll especially see it if they unclench their fists and relax their arms). You can always offer 2nd boob and they'll either take it or they won't. It is absolutely not necessarily to watch the clock and switch after X minutes or stop after Y minutes total. Sometimes babes need longer at the breast to get what they need and that's normal.
As for the other boob, you can hand express until you are comfortable if you're engorged or just start with that boob next feeding.
I only sterilized everything once, after it was opened out of the package. After that everything was hand washed in hot water and antibacterial dish soap. LO has never been sick or suffered from any ailment other than allergies to date. I'll sterilize everything again once Johnny is here since he's getting Jimmy's hand-me-downs, but then we'll go back to hand washing.
Regarding sterilizing: I was told to just do it the once. Once the item is in your home and devoid of factory germs, it's safe to just wash.
I sterlized bottles and pacifiers once. I did sterlize pumping parts more often because even after washing with hot water and soap sometimes milk residue would still be left in the hard to clean places.

@strickland8052 from what I remember at my breastfeeding class, I believe in the beginning the nurse said to switch after 20 minutes or so in order to stimulate both breasts so the milk comes in on both sides (apparently our boobs don't talk to each other). I think after that it was just a matter of watching the baby, you'll kind've "run out" in the one breast and then baby will get a little fussy and you switch to the other side. Oh and just wanted to add she also said if you start on the left one and switch to the right one mid feeding, at the next feeding you'll want to start on the right side. I wouldn't have thought that (I thought you just alternate whichever you left off on) but it makes sense, you don't want one breast always being the 2nd one (which they most likely won't drink as much from). Again I think it's most important in the beginning when you're establishing supply.
I think it depends on your hospital and their policy during circumcision LGW2015 and MRSCORKER, our hospital asked us since we put on our paperwork that baby was not to get a pacifier during our son's circumcision. The option other than a paci was for one of the nurses had put some sweet tasting thing (can't remember what it was) on their gloved finger and allowed baby to suck on their finger during the procedure rather than a paci.
LauraPCOS it sounds weird, but that really is true. I nursed our first for 18 months and during those first few months there were days he pooped a couple times a day and others when he went a few days in between poops. However, during the first few weeks poop was quite frequent.
