Anyone have questions about baby care that they feel silly asking their OB or pediatrician?

  • So here is mine. I have only changed boy poop diapers. Does the poop get up into a baby girls vagina? How do you get it out?

Yes unfortunately sometimes it does. It's miserable (whether squirmy baby or fighting toddler). It hasn't happened too often and there really isn't a tip to avoiding it (because all us ladies know how to wipe, it's just that sometimes it's unavoidable). But don't worry, it's just something you see and fix the best way you can. It's really just gently using a wipe to get it out (and I followed with a bath if I could).
  • Sterilizing bottles. Do you actually boil the bottle and it's pieces along with the nipples?  :s

Wondering the same. Won't the nipple like...melt? Or did I really not pay attention in science class?

I just washed them and then air dried, no sterilizing. My dishwasher has a sanitize setting but I don't know if you can put bottles in the dishwasher? I didn't have a dishwasher with DS..

  • @ibabyloveb87 Yep, you boil everything, including the nipples. I can't remember for how long, but maybe 5 minutes? I used a slotted spoon to scoop out the nipples and tongs for the bottles. Of course, it's way easier to just use one of those sterilizer bags in the microwave.
  • Directions on the bottles all say 5 minutes. Glad I wasn't the only one wondering @sjo_thetwins because I was feeling really dumb! My SIL is bringing me her dishwasher basket this weekend which I will use after the initial boiling.

@ibabyloveb87 We bought a microwave steamer sterilizer. It was Tommee Tippee brand because that's the type of bottles we used. I loved it. I think it was about $25, but we used it daily for a looooong time for his bottles (nipples and all), my pump bottles, pacis, etc.

Just a suggestion. Obviously boiling water works just as well, but is more time intensive. Watched pot and all that.

  • Mine is a labouring question that I was too embarrassed to ask at prenatal class - is it safe to try and have a poop while in labour?

  • Do you change baby's diaper before feeding or after? Doesn't feeding stimulate them to poop? Or do you change both before and after? I want to be efficient when it comes to middle of the night changes!

I would change before because after he was always asleep and I would rather stab myself in the face than wake him up!
I would change before too. Unless It was a poop after I would change those!

My bestie ended up needing to use formula so she would get it heating and then go change her son and by the time he was all cleaned up the bottle would be ready.

Shit does happen in the vagina especially whe  they are small wipe from top to very back. It's more scary in first 48 hours then you get used to doing what needs to be done lol

It's okay to try to poop in early labor (as long as you aren't straining), but you aren't supposed to once you get into active labor or transition.  You are probably going to poop during the pushing stage.  You're using the same muscles to push the baby out as you use to poop.  It sounds gross, but trust me, you probably won't even realize it's happening.
  • @Mintz1982 I wonder if it matters that we're doing cloth diapers, though. They don't hold as much, so if baby pees during a feed, I'll have to change after anyway.

I pooped in labor with 2/3 of my kiddos, so I'd say yes! ;)
  • I will also say I pooped when I delivered my youngest and I legitimately cared not.  My husband told me later and it dawned on my that my doc said something about cleaning up my bottom, but I was so focused on getting HER out, that it never crossed my mind that I pooed.

You can add stuffing for overnight that gets them just about as absorbent, but I often used pampers at night with DS just in the off chance he slept through the night.

  • @LauraPCOS Several of my friends had cleaned themselves out before they even got to the hospital. Diarrhea hit as a sign of labor. No word on if it continued when they got to the hospital or if they pooped during pushing, but so many people do it's whatever.

  • Okay another question.

At the prenatal class they said if you're breastfeeding, you can be feeding more often than if you're using formula.  If your baby is up every 2 hours BFing, are you suppose to change them every time?

  • Awesome thread. I know there are some stupid questions, but i can't think of any of them right now.

I don't think there's a rule that says you have to. It's fairly easy to tell if they need it in disposables. It's harder in cloth to tell. In the short time I was breastfeeding I made DH do the nighttime diaper changes and bring him to me to nurse. I hope two hour intervals are rare for us all!

  • Poop gets all up in vag. You just figure it out.

+1 for microwave sterilization. The dishwasher can leave your bottles/nips dingy.

I did not poop while in labor. I did, however, clean out right before.

  • @LauraPCOS I only changed my kiddos usually every other wake up. My second never slept more than 2 hours anyways so it worked out to be about every 4 hours she got changed which was fine. It just depends how much your baby pees, some pee way more than others. I would just do the squeeze test. If it didn't feel that wet I left it, and it was really fat and squishy I changed it. It will just depend, you figure out quick when it's really wet though with the squeeze test you can do that while your feeding them.

  • Tbh, I haven't read the BF thread so this may be in there, but I got a lot of conflicting advice from the medical people in my life after having dd. The lactation consultant said to wake her every two hours to BF (later our ped said not to do that- and she would wake up if she was hungry) so a lot of times we were changing her diaper before because the only way to wake her up was to strip her down.

*Please don't misunderstand as me taking a position one way or another as I have not educated myself on what the 'best' answer is as far as 2 hrs vs self regulated, but if you are doing every two hours, changing them beforehand may help.

I feel like the every two hours advice is until your milk is in and baby has started to gain.  Once they're back to birth weight I don't think you have to wake them anymore for feeds :)
  • How do you know when to change a newborn? Do they cry, or you just do it on a schedule like the early feedings? I'm sure in our class they said something about how many times they need to be changed a day, but I still am not sure how you know when...

I am TERRIFIED of changing my first girl diaper because I too only have boys. Every time I mention it, someone says just wipe down. Noooooo. I have one, I know that. I am more concerned about what to do in the event of a shitsplosion! I imagine it's everywhere and I don't know how to get it out. Omg, so scared.

Breastfed babies usually poop right after feeding.

That makes sense because mine would sleep forever in the early days and not wake up to feed. I hated waking him up and he took a while to get back to birth weight. The more you know...
