Re: All Things Baby thread

  • @kcolly32. We are in the same boat. I actually sent a message to the pediatrician this evening bc it's breaking my heart to watch DS squirm and get so frustrated. I will let you know what they say!
Thanks, I'll be interested in seeing what advice you get. I've read online that ppl do prune juice or make their formula less concentrated. Idk about the juice but the formula idea sounds good. However I was waiting to get an actual doctors opinion first before trusting the Internet.

  • How long do y'all wait after feeding LO to lay them down at night? I try to wait until I know he's asleep good before I lay him down or he will fuss but I feel like I wait too long.
  • @kcolly32 we had and still have constipation issues with formula. The doctor switched us to a probiotic formula and suggested karo syrup. I would check with your doctor first but that helped us. Currently, we are using a prescription called lactulose from tyre doctor which doesn't leave sugar in their system like karo.
Good luck and hope your little one feels much better soon!

Not too long. I hold him upright and burp him. As long as he burps I'll put him right down. I also usually swaddle him before switching breasts so he's basically ready to be put down.  If he's fussing or not burping I'll walk around bouncing him a bit, rocking him and trying to get him to burp. He's not always 100% asleep but I will stand there and make sure he's closing his eyes before I go back to bed myself.

This summarizes what I do too. Especially the swaddle between breasts.

  • @kcolly32 heard back from our pediatrician. She said that since his stool isnt large and very hard or pebble like that he isn't truly "constipated". He was a premie and that his stomach muscles are probably still getting stronger and it will take a bit from him to pass a bowl movement without having straining as much. She said we could give him a few sips of water if we'd like to help it out.

we are going to try it the next time we notice him having trouble.

We started warming his bottles 2 days ago, using gas relief drops and watching the air bubbles in his bottles. Those things have seemed to help his "straining and grunting" a little.

I know that doesn't help much. Sorry!

  • Anyone else's LOs developing baby pimples? I know this isn't a big deal, but just wondering if there is anything I can do to help it clear up?! I've read it's related to excess oil in the skin, I've just been gently cleaning her forehead with saline wipes and baby soap. How long does it last? I hope I don't get flamed for this!
  • Alright, baby A loves to be in out arms and our arms only as we bounce, swing, and rock her to sleep.

She has a RnP but only lasts 30-40 mins in there if lucky. Sometimes she knows right away it's not the real deal and starts fussing to gtfo! The otber day, she practically stood up in it crying her eyes out.

However...we stopped by our friend's place yesterday and discovered that baby A loves their Fisher Price swing. Slept in it for a little over an hour before we had to leave.

Now we are convinced that it could be our lifesaver and will get it today but...

Idk if I should just get the Mamaroo as it is a lot smaller and better suited for our tiny apt. My friend was telling me that their FP swing even at the slowest setting is too fast so they put a blanket over the swing to provide some weight and slow down the speed.

FP swing or Mamaroo???? Any feedback from those that own either one or both? TIA!
  • @AliKay20 we have both, she spends a lot more time in her mamaroo, it's a miracle worker! I'm trying to not let her get used to being in motion to sleep. Sometimes she lays in it and sleeps without it moving. But there are 5 different motions 5 different speeds and it has 4 white noise settings that play! I know it's expensive but to me it's worth it! It's also very lightweight so it's easy to move told you need to. If you do decide on a swing I would get one that swings side to side and then you can turn it 90° and it can swing front to back. Some of my mommy friends recommended that.
  • @AliKay20 we have both and LO loves them both equally. He will sleep for a few hours in either one. The mamaroo definitely takes up a lot less space. You can always try one and return if it doesn't work for you... that was our plan if he didn't like one.

@AliKay20 we own a Graco swing and the mamaroo. Honestly it depends on DDs mood on which she prefers. You could always go with the cheaper swing and if it doesn't work out, return it and get the mamaroo.

I will say the mamaroo is just so nicely built though. Car ride setting is Arias favorite.

  • @AliKay20 We have an older mamaroo and DS doesn't care for it for more than a few minutes, I think it would work better if it was more vigorous but I don't want to buy anything else at this point.

  • @AliKay20. This is the swing we have. DS was originally to small for it and wasn't a fan. But the last 3 days he's LOVED it. You can change the direction it swings too.

Our friends had the exact same situation happen. Their friends had this swing and thier DD loved it. So she recommended it to me.

  • I will second that the mamaroos movements are very subtle compared to the swing. Which is why Aria may prefer one or the other depending on mood. I really would go with the swing first since you know that worked for A.

  • @AliKay20 our lo loves the swing too. It does go kinda fast, but I buckle him in and he seems ok. We actually have two swings and one goes faster than the other. I suggest looking at reviews on a couple online. But we don't have a mamaroo, so I can't compare
  • @AliKay20 our LO loves his swing. We bought it at a kids consignment shop for $30, you could always try that so you aren't dropping a bunch of money on a brand new swing that she may not like.
  • @AliKay20 both of our LO's have not loved the mamaroo. I agree with others, the movements just seem too subtle. DS1 loved the swing that my mom has at her house, but I haven't had DS2 try it yet. I would go with that first, and if it doesn't work then invest in the mamaroo.

  • The mamaroo is just ok in my opinion - not the miracle worker like many of my friends have said - for us at least
  • @AliKay20 we have the rockaroo, which is a little less expensive than the mamaroo. Both of my LOs have loved it immensely! It has just one rocking motion but 5 different speeds. Also incredibly lightweight to move around.

  • @AliKay20. Which swing did you end up getting and does LO like it?

Is anyone else's baby very warm, all the time? No fever, but this 11 lb 3.5 week old baby boy of mine is a little hot water bottle, all the time. He spent time in the NICU when he first arrived for some tummy issues, and we even had to bring in muslin blankets to swaddle him (he'd wear that and a diaper) because he got too warm! He lives in onesies and muslin swaddles at home now. I have yet to put any of the cute sleepers on him that we got, and I don't even bother with socks! We're in Texas and it's hot out, but we keep the house about 72.

Hayes is exactly one week today. He is back to birth weight but the amount he is sleeping is insane. DD never slept so I don't know if I just need to change my expectations or if this is normal. He has probably been awake all of 45 minutes today. I don't want tonight to be a complete shit show. Any ideas on how to keep him up for a bit? The usual tricks aren't working (wash cloth, tickling feet, etc). Or is this just normal?
We're trying baby wise, and the whole theory theory is that newborns need to sleep ALOT, and good day sleep begets good night sleep. We aim for 45 min awake time, total, then back to bed. 3.5 weeks old and we've gotten some 4-5 hour stretches of sleep (so 5 between feeds) here. When he wakes at night to eat, he's usually back down within an hour... Pesky hiccups have been our roadblock. He has a witching hour some evenings from about 7-10  where he doesn't sleep as well, but all his day sleep isn't making him party all night.  The big difference is that we wake to feed every 3 hours during the day, but we don't wake until 5 hours at night, and when he hits a month, we'll stop waking at night. Many times baby is back sound asleep right after he eats. So, I think it's normal at this age, and in our house, a good thing.

I use baths, diaper changes, and tummy time to wake baby up when it's time to eat and he won't wake up, and these days I can at least get him to wake up enough to drink 2.5-3 oz, which for him is about a "full feed".

We wait about 10 min after we finish burping to change diaper then back to bed because we've been battling some spit up. He usually goes down drowsy but not actually asleep. We've had some pesky middle of the night hiccups lately that make me wait longer to put him down.
  • Is there some trick to not getting peed all over during diaper changes? Our little guy has been soaking us (and the PnP, the walls, the couch, the dog, himself...) on a daily basis.

If you know he's prone to do it, let the air hit his penis (that's what usually triggers it) but don't take the diaper off all the way. Just kind of hover the dirty one over his penis for a few seconds to see if he's going to spray. Hopefully then you can catch the spray in the dirty diaper without making a mess or wasting a clean diaper. :)

DS1 never did this, but this LO has done it a few times already and we've only been home for two days. Last night we even had to give him a sponge bath! So I am learning right along with you. :)

  • Anyone have a two camera monitor system that they like? We ordered one to upgrade our old one camera one, but don't like it and are going to order something else. We would like two way talk and the temperature to show, but could live without the temp. I really don't want to order another one we don't like.
  • Baby E is almost 2 weeks old and we've been dealing with a bunch of congestion issues. We have her 2 week checkup on Tuesday so I'm going to talk to her pediatrician but wanted to see if anyone had dealt with similar issues. Like super stuffy nose and sneezing. We've been using saline and the nose sucker at least a couple of times a day to help clear things out. We had originally brought it up to one of the peds at the first week but they didn't seem concerned. She sounds like a little pug!

  • @justaudrey C is the same way. When we asked the ped about it, she said it was completely normal as they're getting used to the world and that their nasal passages can still be swollen.
  • @Mfuller76 along with opening the diaper only slightly and waiting a few seconds, I sometimes blow air down there to make him colder faster lol. We've been peed on way too many times, so I had to think of a way to double check. And sometimes I'll lay a wipe over his junk while I change him.

This is what another boy mom friend advised me to do. This works great for me. That way when/if he starts to pee I just hold the wipe down and it catches most of it. Better than having to clean up all around the changing table.

This child has the hiccups again. We're on a two a day streak, but I'm pretty stoked they are occurring at 7:45 am and not 3:30 am post-feeding. They usually keep him awake and occasionally he spits up with them, but he's currently sleeping through them. We've been trying gripe water and it's cut it down from a 1.5 hour thing to 15 min.

Anyone else have a hiccuping baby?
  • @kwilliams3402 our LO has hiccups all the time a well! Our pediatrician said it's total normal and that it bothers is more than it bothers the baby. Sometime when the stomach stretches after a feeding it can stimulate a nerve that runs along side of the stomach called the vagus nerve which triggers hiccups! I found that interesting. They said sucking on a pacifier can help
