Re: UO 8.25

  • This is kind of a FFFC and UO in one - I love McDonald's. I know it's so healthy, but I could eat their fries all day.  They're actually my favorite fast food restaurant.  I don't go there too often but it's definitely a guilty pleasure of mine!

  • @karaelaine1991 I love McDonald's too. McNuggets and McDouble? I am all about that life. And their breakfast. Not sorry about it one bit. I wish I lived closer to one (isn't that crazy????) but it is probably better that I don't because I would go often. I would have to say my favorite fast food place is Chick-fil-A, however.

My UO is, and I may be in the minority (I certainly was going to a university that basically was in Southern Georgia and now, living in FL), but I think too many monograms is over the top. Especially the gigantic 3-letter monogram wooden signs. I had a sorority sister who had a monogram decal on her STICK SHIFT! And on everything that basically didn't move. Now, a tasteful little monogram on your tumbler or on the corner of a blanket is cute, but my style is definitely trending towards less monograms. That is all!

@karaelaine1991 I definitely may have stopped and had McDonald's twice in one day while driving home from a conference on Sunday. I love their double cheeseburgers. I don't even care if people think they are non-food.

@nolemama24 It's been half a decade since I lived in the deep south but oh yes, monograms everywhere, especially in sorority life. Yikes. I went to University of South Carolina and my freshman roommate had her keymonogrammed. Also: I totally read your post as "mammograms" at first and it was pretty funny
  • Love McDonald's! They're building a new one closer to my house and I'm probably a little too excited for that!

My UO: I don't like anything pumpkin and I don't get all of the hype for it when Fall comes around. I love Fall, it's my favorite season, but could do without the pumpkin!

  • @nolemomma14 oh I love me some pumpkin spice but I always get more excited about peppermint everything once the pumpkin spice fades out after Thanksgiving.
  • @nolemama24 @canavara I've only been in SC for 2 years but right off the bat the monograms were annoying. I cannot endorse the slogan "I'm from the south, we monogram everything" (seen recently on monogrammed kitchen towels). I especially hate it on car decals. Makes me glad my sorority days were spent in the great north.

  • @canavara I feel the same way.  When a mom's plan is to exclusively breastfeed, I think she should be given the chance to exhaust all options before potentially undermining her supply by supplementing.  I know multiple people whose pediatricians recommended supplementing or switching to formula exclusively without ever referring them to lactation consultants, which really annoys me.  One was told she had to stop nursing immediately and switch to nutramigen because the baby was allergic to cows milk...I'm like wait whatttt?

Soooo, instead of cutting dairy out of mom's diet (which is what my LC and ped suggested for my cow's milk allergic daughter), he told her she had to switch the cow's milk allergic baby to a cow's milk-based formula (yes, one that super processed and made for babies with cow's milk protein allergy, but still, the logic escapes me).

  • I never knew about the monogramming thing.  The only things I ever see monogrammed here in New England are LL Bean totes.

that would kill me too.  Unless there's some other issue, there is nothing wrong with being in the 30th percentile.  Percentiles represent a normal distribution--we can't all be at the same point!

I don't really have an UO today but I'm lurking to piggy back on someone else's. Haha

  • @canavara that would be so frustrating to me! A friend of mine has a daughter who is a peanut. Always has been! Her pediatrician told her that the growth curve goes from 0-100 for a reason. Someone has to be at the low end and some on the high end. He was never overly concerned about her daughter being small, because she remained in the same percentile. She's 2 now and still between the 20-25% like she's always been.

Its hard enough to breastfeed it's a shame that so often Drs answered to allergies, low weight, etc is switch to formula. If the parents want to breastfeed they should definitely be given all of the help possible to make it happen. If all options have been exhausted and the baby's health is at risk then absolutely make the switch.

  • @canavara lol @ mammogram!!!!!! this happens to me with the word "popped" I ALWAYS read it as "pooped."

@nolemomma14 ditto on the pumpkin/pumpkin spice. not a fan. I think the only pumpkin flavored thing I like are these super soft pumpkin cookies with chocolate chips that my co-worker makes. so pillow-y and soft...yummmm!

  • My UO: You don't get to have an opinion on another mother's breastfeeding relationship or lack thereof. A pediatrician cannot make a person supplement or switch to formula unless there is a serious medical concern like FTT and even that would take serious intervention if she truly didn't want to.
  • Ugh yes monograms annoy me too!!! I was also in a sorority, but in PA, and I didn't see *too* many monograms, at least not around my sorority sisters (but we always described ourselves as the sorority full of girls who swore they'd never join a sorority lol... there was one very stereotypical sorority on our campus, though, who I did see wearing monogrammed stuff fairly regularly). My BIL's wife really likes them.  I adore her but she is pretty much the definition of basic white girl so it's not very surprising that she likes them haha!

  • @canavara fellow USC grad! Go gamecocks!

I love monograms but do agree that they can be very overdone!

My UO is that if I go to a store and see one more striped maternity shirt I'm going to puke! I have always liked stripes but does EVERYTHING have to have a stripe on it if you're pregnant?!
Baby Boy 3 is on the way!

  • YESSS I love McDonald's! It's been so sad that the thought of eating meat grosses me out lately because their chicken nuggets are fantastic. I have to settle for french fries and a milkshake when I go there now (sad life, I know).
@MaryNog I love that proposal story!!!

  • @Carly79 @karaelaine1991 that is soooo funny!!! well, she & I went to the same university----hence the "nole" part of the username! fun fact: I chose the "mama" spelling because I am Venezuelan and that's how you spell mom in Spanish!

@ThePax89 I'm with you on the frozen yogurt. Give me regular ice cream any day!

  • @canavara it drives me nuts when moms get terrible advice about breastfeeding from pediatricians and get "booby trapped" into supplementing with formula. Supply drops. Etc. It is so important as a breastfeeding mom to arm yourself with the support of an ibclc and a group of other breastfeeding moms.
  • @nolemomma14 WOW!!!!!!!!! I am literally sitting here in shock!!! Venezuelans are few & far in between I feel like! We have so much in common, lol!

My UO is that I really, really don't care how someone feeds their baby. I absolutely HATED breastfeeding with my daughter, so we formula fed, but I greatly respect the mom's that breastfeed. I also greatly respect the mom's who formula feed. I do not understand the back and forth between the two camps; it makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever.

  • @christac1010 You've got absolutely nothing to feel bad about! Feeding your baby is the important thing!

I had a terrible experience the first time around with BFing so I'm not doing it at all this time. Not even for a second. But of course tons of people feel the need to tell me "oh, the second time can be so much better, just try it so you don't feel guilty!" First of all, I don't feel guilty nor should I. Second, I don't give a hoot if it "could be better", I'm NOT DOING IT!

  • @emy730 haha I'm glad I helped brighten your day :) we love that story!
  • @ElleMF728  I agree - a pediatrician can't make a person do anything, but they can give advice that's harmful to a breastfeeding relationship.  I hope my previous comment didn't come across as judging the mothers, because it was meant as opinion about pediatricians, not the moms.  Many parents take their pediatrician's advice as gospel or assume there's a medical reason for a pediatrician's advice when there isn't always.  When new parents are often looking at their pediatrician as the ultimate authority on infants, I believe that pediatricians have an obligation to give all available options and educate on choices.

I know parents who struggled like crazy night weaning their 4-6 month olds because their ped told them their babies "shouldn't be nursing at night anymore".  Our pediatrician gave me lots of sleep advice that I didn't ask for until I told him that I wasn't interested in receiving unsolicited parenting advice, so unless his advisement was medically indicated I was doing just fine with her sleep.  He never asked about it again because she was growing normally and surpassing milestones despite the fact that she didn't "sleep through the night" from 8-6 until she was over 18 months old.

@colleenkevin I understand and appreciate what you are saying, but my point is that the attitude can come across as a bit condescending, though I want to stress that I know it isn't intended as such.  What it is implying, is that you know what is better for this child's development than his own parents or pediatrician.  It implies that these friends are too uneducated, uninformed or assertive enough to do what you or others have deemed to be in the "best" for their own child.

Outsiders rarely know what is actually going on privately in someone else's family or why they make certain decisions. Do I think that there are doctors out there giving crappy advice? Sure, but I think the best thing to do is just assume that my friends are fully capable of making good choices for themselves and their children and then to mind my own business. One of those choices includes picking a doctor whose methods and philosophies they are comfortable with and feel align with their own (even if they may not align with mine!).

    I can't either! I think think it's so overrated.

  • Whenever someone talks about Rent, I get that stupid "five thousand and whatever" song stuck in my head. I refused to play the song in my head to try and figure out the exact number, because that is all it takes to get it stuck there for HOURS.
