Dealing with Morning Sickness

Morning sickness hasn't hit me yet, but I fully expect it to strike in the next week or two.  From the symptoms thread I know plenty of us are already experiencing the dreaded nausea and the horrid brush-your-teeth-and-vomit-at-the-same-time.  Let's hear it ladies!  What are your tried and true morning sickness remedies?

Re: Dealing with Morning Sickness

  • I had it so bad with my third pregnancy that I was on reglen and zofran, with this preg my dr is recommending dicleglis (unisom and b6) but with 4 young kids and a husband who is frequently traveling I can't take something that's going to make me a zombie. Some non-script remedies I've had various levels of success with are; ginger candies, b6 lollipops, small high protein meals, sea-bands, sour flavored popsicles, and walking in cool fresh air.

  • I don't have any foolproof remedies, but the ginger hard candies can help. They're a little spicy for me so I don't particularly care for them but when I'm feeling really sick they help. To be honest, I just lay on the couch a lot :(

  • Oh! I need to add that on my last BMB there was a fairly significant following of woman who SWORE by ramen for morning sickness. I didn't have it bad with my last (4th) preg so I never tried it, but plan on this time around if I need to! Also want to add that I wouldn't wish *all day* sickness on my worst enemy so my heart really goes out to any ladies currently suffering.
  • Wait, @Dannylion24, as in ramen noodles? I've never heard of that before.  I don't have any advice, other than apples were about the only thing I could stomach the last time around.
  • I've never heard of ramen either - tell us more @Dannylion24 I ate a lot of goldfish and ginger ale any work which seemed to help. And at home the only thing I could stomach was cinnamon raisin bagels with cream cheese and orange juice.

  • I just eat something.  Crackers and cheese,  banana chips, nuts, apples.  Normally if I eat something I will feel better. If that doesn't work I lay down although that's not going to work every time this time because I have a 9 month old and babysit a 3 month old.
  • @leslieknope and @JaneArson yeppers - chicken flavored ramen noodles! Like I said, not something I personally tried yet, but it's certainly in my back pocket if things get rough this time around. I actually don't mind the taste, just don't love the sodium factor, but oh well! Gotta do what you gotta do. I also ate tons of cheez-its and block cheese so I hear yah about goldfish @JaneArson
  • Sour has been the only thing helping me. I've been making lemonade popsicles and eating sour patch kids before meals to settle my stomach long enough to eat real food.

  • @Dannylion24  Never heard of ramen but think it's freaking fabulous! (Sodium intake aside) I can only imagine the side eye I would get as I happily slurped a Cup o' Noodles at my desk at 8am.
  • Ginger (candy, tea, smoothies) and small (1/2 cup sized) snacks every hour or so have been helping for me, but I can't choke down anything after around 4:00 when the nausea gets really bad.  I've been going to bed at 8:00 just to avoid feeling like crap any longer than I have to.
  • I've heard good things about ramen too. I think it's the salt.

  • Ramen sounds delicious right now. I've been taking Diclegis, and while it made me a zombie the first day, I have gotten used to it. I'm only taking it at night, and have debated on whether or not to take one in the morning now that my morning sickness seems to be getting worse. I'm wearing sea bands today and have been sucking on preggie pop drops this morning. I've only thrown up once, so I guess that's a win?

  • I had "all day sickness" with DD up to the day I delivered her...my OB recommended Skittles...because they are not bad when they come back up!! lol!!!  Lemon heads, ice cold water and seabands together with phenergan helped me a little.  I also always had a plastic bag with me: just in case!
  • Lemon water and ginger ale help so much. That and giving in to my cravings. I find I'm super nauseous if I don't eat what my body is craving. Once I have that, I'm good (for a while). Eating small amounts throughout the day helps too. So I always have crackers ready to go.
  • I keep crackers and gatorade on the nightstand. Sip the gatorade when I get back from a bathroom run, nibble the crackers while laying in bed. The eat small meals throughout the day trick is working for me so far, and when I don't have something available to me, I have mints I suck on. Those seabands work wonders, too.

  • Had awful MS with my DD. I was a teacher so having to be "on" at 7 am when the kids arrived was rough. What helped was sipping ginger ale and eating a few saltiness before getting out of bed. I made sure to take it slow getting up. Then eating breakfast, decaf coffee, toast and a protein. Also sucked on wintergreen lifesavers all day. Eating little bits of food nearly constantly. Keep your stomach from getting empty. And eating small portions of my cravings. Nuts were awesome. Salty and kept my energy up. It's not as bad this time and I get up later as a SAHM which helps.

Yes! MS hasn't kicked in yet but with ds I always had lemon heads in my purse!
  • I have ginger, lemon, and honey in hot water in the mornings - then I can eat for about an hour after without feeling like there's a volcano about to explode in my tummy. After reading this all I want in the world is some Cup-o-Noodles though.

  • Another vote for sour tasting things- tart lemonade. And 8mg ondansetron (Zofran) morning and night. I still vomit at least twice a day though : /

  • I can never ever get hungry, so always have to be someway full.  Which is hard since regular meals sound terrible.  I've had luck with PB on crackers, lemon yogurt, and pasta.  The mint preggo drops work for me too.  I'm taking B6 but haven't added the unisom just yet.
  • Thank you to all the ladies that recommended ramen noodles!!! I am rounding week 5 and "morning sickness" started yesterday afternoon and has been unforgiving. I woke up this morning feeling like I was rocking on a boat. Ugh.

I got to work this morning I bought a cup o noodles from the snack bar and it helped so much! I haven't touched this stuff since living off of it in college but I guess it's going to be on rotation now. :)
  • Score one for ramen noodles @RachelGreene - I'm not even feeling that sick and now I'm ravenous for one!
  • @magheeta were you able to function during the day at all? I'm just already so tired I can't imagine adding in a drowse-inducing medicine even if it does have anti-nausea effects :-/
  • So this may just be a random good day... but after feeling super nauseous for almost a week I switched things up. I grabbed a pair of my maternity pants because I'm so disgustingly bloated and switched out my morning coffee for a Starbucks Mango Black Tea Lemonade. Between the two I'm feeling like a million bucks and might actually get some work done.

I might haven ramen for lunch just to be safe
  • @Dannylion24 the first day or two were rough until lunch time, but my body has gotten used to it. I only take them at night, so they're helping me sleep and keep the nausea low. The ability to function (groggily) in the morning is way more worth it to me than running to the toiled every 15 minutes. Maybe ask  your OB for a sample to see how you do with it?

  • I'm taking notes ladies. My MS started this past weekend. I tried sipping broth, but I couldn't stomach it. I have preggie pop drops on the way -- thank God for Amazon. Yesterday I ate saltines on and off all day, sipped ginger ale and citrus water and half a chicken breast for dinner. I literally get no relief - go to sleep sick, wake up sick. 6 more weeks of this, ehh?
  • Another vote for Ramen here.  Slushies have also worked well for me...not something I want to drink every day..but Definitely helps when I really need it.  I was doing Ritz crackers for awhile...but they aren't cutting it so well anymore.  I was also offered diclegis...but between working night shift and already being so exhausted I can't imagine trying that right now.  But if it doesn't get better soon I might be willing to try it.

  • MS just hit me this week. I've been able to keep slushies down, like @scorpiomer. I have a box of saltines sitting on my desk at work and a bag of peppermint candies. I hate ginger with a burning passion, but I'm going to give these beauties a try to see if they settle my stomach long enough for me to eat something. I haven't had any vomiting, thank God, but I have a constant feeling of nausea that keeps me from wanting to eat anything.
  • I just keep hoping this only lasts for first trimester. Not to be a Debbie downer...but with DS, I was sick until week 24. So...it doesn't always end when first trimester ends. Sorry!!! Just being realistic. I was so mad when second trimester started and I didn't instantly feel better.
  • So far NOTHING is helping this time around!  I may need to give the ramen noodles a try!

  • With DD1, I had a near constant nausea. What helped changed from day to day, and included the usual things like crackers, mints, lemon and ginger. Then my dr gave me diclegis. That stuff was magic for me! This time around, I have been doing lemon, mints, Sprite and trying to always keep something in my stomach. I have also been doing 1/2 a unisom at night, which really helps me to be able to at least eat a little. I would recommend that or even a 1/4 of one if you are worried about being groggy the next morning. Just take it in the hour before you go to bed.

  • @STM2017  I hope you have a shorter MS period this time!  Lasting into the second tri is unusual - my SIL had that problem and I felt soooo bad.

  • @JaneArson, thanks. With DS it lasted from weeks 8-24. This time it started earlier (before week 5 started). I keep hoping that means it ends earlier. One of my friends had it her entire pregnancy, even was sick during delivery. I can't even imagine!!!
  • Thanks for the info on your experience @Magheeta my two youngest still wake up during the night so I'm just very wary of anything that messes with my sleep, but trying just a 1/2 a unisom as one person suggested or asking for a sample is an excellent suggestion. Best of luck and I hope you feel better soon!
  • I've been squeezing an orange and then topping with lots of ginger ale. Yum. It helps but I'm feeling queasy from about 2:30 til 8.

  • I just stopped at 7-11 for a Vernors Slurpee.  I think that this is going to become a "thing" for a bit.  Feeling a bit better!

Queasy all day and nothing really helps. I have packaged ginger slices which helps a little as does gingerale and oranges/clementines (been doing this for weeks).

I just push lots of water and force myself to eat something every few hours, nothing sounds good. After I have whatever I eat, it sounds terrible to ever consider for another meal.

Oh and I just lay around on couch all day...no working out, very little housework but classes start next week and I need to get in gear. Ugh

I took Diclectin with my last pregnancy and it was fine after the first few days. Your body gets used to it and there's no zombie affect aside from pregnancy itself   It definitely isn't as good as zofran, but that is no longer an option, sadly.

  • Ramen here I come! I will give that a try but so far I am yet to find something that really works. I'm still contemplating asking for an Rx just to have it handy if things get out of hand.  I was never nauseous with my DD so this is new grounds for me

  • @nursejoc thanks for the info! I'm going to give it a try. Curious as to why you say zofran isn't an option anymore? My sister is currently on it and my midwife said they'd prescribe it again to me as needed (tho she did want me to try the other rx first). I think someone else on the thread said they were taking it too.
