Dealing with Morning Sickness

Re: Dealing with Morning Sickness

  • @Dannylion24 I'm taking it, too, and today is the second day in a row I've felt really good all day. The first two days on it were slow-going in the mornings, but not experiencing any nausea was worth it. It's still hard to get out of bed, but once I do, I'm good.

  • MS hasn't hit yet but last pregnancy, putting the Sea Bands on at night made a HUGE difference in the morning. I would take them off for a few hours after work to give my wrists a break. I also kept crackers by the bedside (saltine and graham) to eat as I woke up. The doctor put me on a zofran which helped but I'm not sure the constipation side effect was worth it.

  • Ohh, perhaps it's doctor/MW dependant. Some aren't prescribing it anymore because it is actually an off-label use when prescribed for morning sickness, and in Canada there is/was a class action lawsuit against the company:

  • So I just talked to a midwife about this the other day. She seemed horrified that the OB had prescribed me Zofran, saying similarly, that it had been taken off market in other countries. I don't know. I was on it until 22 weeks with my last pregnancy and toddler seems ok, slightly off the wall, but I think that's just her. My thinking right now is that without it, embryo and I would be getting next to zero nutrition. That has to be worse right?

  • @ladameperdue  Zofran is DEFINITELY better than no food. I was on it my last pregnancy and it saved both my life and that of my son. It drives me insane when people are all 'gasp zofran' because none of the claims have been proven. Rest easy and do what you need!

  • I took it a few times with my last pregnancy, but it made me zonk right out.  Diclectin works, but if you have HG, it is unfortunate to throw up the pills lol "Welp, there goes $2.50"

I tried some mama's tea this morning which was a combo of herbs meant to combat morning sickness. It worked well, though I am not overly nauseous just yet.

  • Thanks for the info and shared experience @mamabear2015 @ladameperdue and @nursejoc I always appreciate hearing from others when the topic is even a tiny bit controversial!
  • @Magheeta so happy to hear you're feeling better!
  • @Dannylion24 With my last pregnancy I was so ill all the time. I couldn't keep anything down not even water. The doctor tried everything. Diclectin did nothing for me. I lost 25lbs in 8 weeks and was seriously low in iron stores. My ob prescribed zofran as a last resort. I was put on bed rest and told to stop taking them as soon as my body got a handle on the nausea. Apparently the intended use is antinausea for chemo patients. FWIW DS is a perfectly normal happy little guy with no birth defects.
  • @allybadry
Poor thing. That sounds a lot like me! I always looked forward to my trips to the hospital for IV hydration. Felt so good after it haha  I just wanted to be kept hooked up to an IV.

  • In case anyone is interested, these are magic. My H found them at Motherhood Maternity for me. They also have them at CVS and Walgreens. (I'm mobile bumping. Sorry if the picture is huge.) I've been using these at work, otherwise I would be walking out on my students. I've also been told Jolly Ranchers help with MS, too.

  • @DoctorDonna I agree these are petty good and I used these for my #3 pregnancy and I swear I got them at cvs, but I've checked at two recently and they looked at me like I had multiple heads. Thank God for Amazon!
  • Anyone else having trouble keeping liquids down?  I am so unbearably nauseous 24/7.  I can keep most food down, but liquids are hard.  Even a couple of sips make me so sick!  I can keep a little liquid down but I feel terrible!

  • @Pinkpeonies  Yes.  Have Popsicles!  All of the popsicles.  I can't drink more than a few sips at a time, plus I'm nursing my 14 month old still so I'm basically perma  dehydrated.  It sucks.

  • @mamabear2015 ugh!  Sorry you are dealing with this too, especially while nursing!  I will definitely try the Popsicles, thanks.

  • @Pinkpeonies, have you tried carbonated drinks?  Sometimes that helps me when water isn't going so great.

At this point I'm just nauseous and it's usually worse when I haven't eaten something in a couple of hours.  I'm trying to mentally prepare myself for next week when I hit 7 weeks.  That's when it really kicked in with my son.

  • @beckyf321 I have.  They worked ok when I first started with MS, not so much anymore.  I seem to be doing better today with Gatorade.  Just trying to take little sips.

  • @pinkpeonies popsicles definitely help when sipping on liquids doesn't.

I've been eating popsicles and at work I've been munching very slowly on saltless saltines (not as good as the original but all the salt was making me gag and just dehydrating me more). It seems like I go about 5 days with being fine and the suddenly I can barely handle how bad the nausea is! I nearly ran over our HR manager at work today trying to run to the bathroom. Anyone else feel like they need to throw up but don't? I feel like if I would then I would feel better and have some relieve, but every time I get to the bathroom I just don't throw up.

For those that like the Popsicles check out Pedialyte freezer pops (I had those on hand in college when I was hung over).
  • @ashleym112 Half the time I gag really bad and the other half I throw up.  It still does not bring much relief to me, I continue with the nausea.  Worst feeling ever!

  • With both of my girls, all day sickness hit around week 5 and stayed through week 12-13.  Subsisted on saltines and diet ginger ale most days. I'm 6w3d and feeling pretty good so fingers crossed I can choose when to eat crackers this time!
