@Cricket Bug we live about 45 minutes from the hospital. And my parents live about 45 minutes from us, they are caring for my son when we go in. If we need to we will just take him with us and they can pick him up there, but really I'm not that concerned about it.
I'm about 7 minutes from the hospital but my mom, who will be watching my kids, lives 45 minutes away. The tentative plan is for my husband to drop me at the hospital when it's time and then bring the kids to my mom's and come back. Hopefully I won't have to drive them all the way there myself. That would be bad.
I'm not a regular on this thread, but I did a quick search and didn't see anything on this. So sorry if my question is redundant, but at least I tried!
Lately when I sweat (which is all the time because I'm 1,000,000 months pregnant and it's August) my boobs get a very distinctly sweet odor. As a FTM I'm assuming this has something to do with milk coming in? Does this sound familiar or normal to anyone else? TIA!
Hi, FTM here. How do I Know if I have enough diapers, breast milk bags or nipple shields?
You don't. Every baby is different and every breastfeeding journey is unique. This is why we are lucky to live in the era of Amazon Prime.
PS (A nipple shield is not something you need to buy in advance. You can purchase one if you need it, and you should use it under the direction of a lactation consultant.)
@Sbrown721I just bought some today at Target. It was sold in store and they had the red one which says hospital grade so I assume that's what I wanted. Also got Tucks and jumbo pads! Fun shopping cart.
@KimmySchmidt Thanks. The nipple shield suggestion was from a BTDT mom that I trust. I will keep that in mind.
They can be the difference between breastfeeding and formula feeding for some, but if they're used incorrectly or when they're not necessary, they can impede the process. So definitely if you're in a position where you feel like you need the help of a nipple shield, reach out to a Lactation consultant first.
eta: my Lactation consultant had them in her office available for purchase on the spot. I don't remember how much they cost, but I remember feeling like it was reasonable.

So much this. I was given a nipple shield to use in the hospital because my nipples were sore. I'm fairly certain it helped contribute to my supply being low for the first 2 months. We had a good latch without it, so it really was unnecessary for us and likely just set us back in the beginning.

Yeah, like Kimmy said, keep in mind that you don't want to use one for the reasons that most people use them. Your nipples will hurt for a while, but then theyll get used to it. I had flat nipples so they gave me one in the hospital, but were very adamant about weaning off of it asap, and told me if I used it, I needed to pump after DD nursed because the sheild doesn't allow as much stimulation as you need to stimulate supply. I would wait to buy one and then let them determine in the hospital if you need one. They gave me one, im sire I was billed for it through insurance, but I didn't have tO go out and buy one.
I have a mucous plug questions..but first, let me describe in detail what mine looked like last time, and also, show you a picture...
no, but really, where is the mucus plug located? I always assumed it was at the top of the cervix, inside and then it starts to fall out when you dilate. But it seems like a lot of people are being told they're "closed tight and not soft", but they're still losing their plug, so how would it be getting out? Educate me. I am scared to google.
Anyone have any solutions for getting more sleep? I have to sleep on my side obviously at this point, but my hips hurt so much I wake up hourly to roll over, which causes excruciating pain in my pelvis. Every. Damn. Hour. I've been taking half a tab of unisom but it's not doing anything anymore apparently.
@mrsvoorhees I was really looking forward to the detailed description and attached picture. And the very well controlled methodologically non-flawed case study for the effectiveness of red raspberry leaf tea

I would recommend getting something super, super cushy for under your hips! I had the same pain last pregnancy and was up a lot to change sides because my hips hurt so bad. We got a new mattress about 6 months ago and I have barely hurt at all this pregnancy. Last time, I bought a foam mattress cover for like $15 at Walmart and put it on my side of the bed, folded, and it worked wonders!!
@MrsVoorhees How will we know it's really a MP if you don't give us vivid details and pics!?
I do wonder the same thing, but I'm not touching Google with a ten foot pole regarding MPs. When I lost part of mine last week, I thought, well, I must be dilated a little. Then I came on here and people were losing it while being completely closed, so now I'm confused.
Regarding MP, are people losing parts of it when they go to the bathroom or is it in their underwear? @camichael84 and @seitzy3 - you guys have mentioned losing parts so I'm curious.
Just wondering because there is no way I can see what's in the toilet after I go thanks to my belly, so I might miss this event if it come out while peeing
@RG1 it's really thick, so if you lost some in the toilet, you will see some remnants when you wipe. If you're like me, and always check the TP for blood because you're paranoid. Lol
@mrsvoorhees. I also check the TP so that makes sense. Used to check every time in the first tri out of paranoia. Now I check because I'm hoping something weird will be on there and it will indicate the time is near.
@RG1 Eh, mine is way TMI and I'll try to be as vague while helpful as possible, but it was after sex, so it was in the general area of where that occurred. Having seen my MP in my previous pregnancy (when my water broke), it was easy to identify. I'm not entirely sure if it was part or the whole thing. I don't think I'd notice it if it happened during peeing either.
Thank you ladies! You make me feel a lot more comfortable about the time it will take me to get to the hospital.
@PSUBecky23 I'm not 100% sure the thought process behind my midwives reasoning, but it could be because I am still considered high risk, and they aren't sure which hospital I will need to deliver at (one has a NICU, the other doesn't). I never went into labour with DD, so I feel simultaneously BTDT, and completely new.

@RG1 I see that worry, but it doesn't look like semen. Again, TMI, DH didn't see it last time and even he could tell that it wasn't semen. However, I imagine the chances of losing a MP this way are a rare occasion, so you probably won't have to try and decipher between the two!
@MrsVoorhees We just got a memory foam mattress topper from Costco, I swear to God I heard angels singing when I laid down last night. Didn't sleep overly well because I had to get up every 2 hours to pee, but my hips didn't hurt this morning, so I count that as a win!
I understand it to be what closes off the cervix. I knew when I lost it the first time just by the difference in feel when wiping. Reminds me a lot of the mucus at ovulation time

So it's on the outside of the cervix? Like the part closest to the vagina? Because I always thought of it the same way, but on the inside part, closest to the sac
I'm not afraid to Google! This diagram and the others I saw showed that the mucus plug is basically in the cervix and not really in one end of the other. It seems like you would have to dialated at least a little bit to lose it, so maybe the people who lose it without being dialated are just not dialated enough for the doctor to notice?
And this is how you discuss a MP without making people want to barf...
But seriously, I appreciate the discussion, because I have definitely noticed stuff down there in the day or so after sex and been nervous! Between the already increased discharge in pregnancy and the fact that water breaking can be such a slow process, I'm worried I'll totally miss all the signals, have no early contractions, and end up having to rush frantically to L&D. Not exactly a justified fear, but then no one ever accused a pregnant woman of excess logic...

I was the first time pregnant woman who refused to believe I was in labor because my contractions weren't consistent and I was only 38w. My husband had to force me to go to the hospital where my water broke as soon as I laid down in triage. Good timing. (I had literally zero signs before contractions started out of nowhere.)
I feel like a dummie for asking this and google didn't really help me...
If I'm having period like cramps, is there a point in timing them? Can these be contractions without feeling any tightening? Tonight when I went to bed I would get cramping, it would be uncomfortable and I kind of felt like I could poop, but then it would go away, then come back. This happened for a couple hours. My stomach wasn't tight through them though. If I did time them and they are regular, would these be considered reason to go to the hospital? (I've been told to go once I notice contractions because of our distance to the hospital).
@rg1 - I would time them. When I was in labor for my son, my contractions felt like period cramps and I barely noticed any tightening. It was fairly mild in the beginning and I ignored it thinking it was a side effect of the membrane sweep I had earlier in the day. It was actually my husband that pointed out that there was a pattern to them and I started timing.
@Marajay6 Okay thank you! People always say you'll know when you feel contractions and I definitely know this felt different but wasn't sure if it meant anything. So I would just time from the start of feeling a cramp until the start of the next, right?
