Baby led weaning

We're trying to do mainly BLW. This solid food experience seems the most overwhelming part of motherhood for me so far! Since I spend so much time googling and over thinking what to feed LO I wanted to see what others doing BLWing are feeding their LOs.

We havent started solids yet. Start next weekend. But I'm interested to see what others are doing as well!

  • We just got out of the pediatrician's office, where we discussed this at length. I don't have experience yet, as we were planning on starting next week, but the doctor did BLW with his two girls, and this is what he told me:
Slowly introduce things. You don't have to go a whole week, but give some time to gauge whether a reaction is going to happen.
He recommended first foods were raw cucumber, carrots, or broccoli. He said they're not going to get anything off of it, so textured things were good. The bigger, the easier to hold, and less risk of choking. He said cucumbers particularly were soothing on sore gums. I asked about avocado and banana, and he said there wasn't any benefit or deterrent to using those, other than the amount of mess you want to clean up.
The only thing he said to avoid right now is acid-based fruits. (Citrus, pineapple, etc.) LO has AR anyway, so we would avoid those regardless.
He said the best thing is that Mom and Dad actually get to eat their own meals, while they are hot, and baby is occupied and feels like part of the group.
That's what I got so far. I'm really hoping this goes well...

We've tried avocado, sweet potatoes, blueberry pancake, today I made some mashed apple to give the spoon a try.  I got a cantaloupe but it just seemed to hard.  I want to try broccoli next.

We have our Drs appointment on Monday and I plan on asking a thousand questions!

  • kaym6kaym6 member
@KFrob I cut the cantaloupe and left the rind on a few pieces and washed it off really good so he had something to grip and he loved it! He has two teeth so I was worried about him getting off a big piece since everything else I've made him has been way softer but he did great, gagged and spit right out anything too big!
  • I've found banana and avocado too slimy LO can't get a grip on them and gets frustrated and has a meltdown.  Any advice from anyone?

@kvacmak I put those in a mesh feeder!
  • KFrobKFrob member
I read to roll them in crushed cheerio dust.  I haven't try it yet though.
  • @kvacmak When I give avocado I don't give a ready to eat ripe one. If you do just under ripe it's much cleaner and easier to hold.

So so far LO likes avocado, cucumber, and corn puffs. He does not like bananas at all. And we have had one allergic reaction to yogurt (hello probable dairy allergy!) so we have to take it easy with dairy.

Has anyone introduced eggs yet? My pediatrician said its fine and that he can have anything at all we want to give him other than honey but I'm nervous! Lol there are a lot of recipes I want to make him but they contain eggs so I want to give him just those first to make sure he isn't allergic! I fully trust my pediatrician just seeing if anyone has actually done it yet.

@kaym6 I'm having the same fear!!!  I read so much conflicting information about egg whites and whether they're okay or not.  It just seems so easy to give her scrambled eggs!

Also, how is everyone handling this with working?  My pedi said we should be feeding her solids in the morning and at dinner and to start lunch time very soon.  I'm finding trying to balance the morning routine of bottle feeding, pumping (EP), and then solids very cumbersome (I should also add that I do mornings by myself, bc of my husbands work schedule he's already gone for the day).  LO doesn't seem that interested in solids directly after her bottle in the morning.  I'm also not sure how to handle it with my daycare provider.  I'm thinking I might just send homemade baby food to daycare.

  • How are you feeling this is effecting breastfeeding/formula feeding? I have found the last 2 months LO isnt eating nearly what she was. She used to eat 32oz consistently and now its anywhere from 22-30oz. That includes a night time feeding which she didnt do since 3 months. At her 5 month appt she gained a good amount of weight so I know she is getting what she needs but I fear once solids start she will be drinking less formula. Or is this what is meant to happen?

@kaym6 our public nurses also said that all foods are fine, except honey. We haven't started solids yet but we will introduce eggs within the first couple weeks. We eat a LOT of eggs in our house, so getting her on board will make breakfast much more convenient!

@cali1710 yes, that will happen! The babies will eat less milk as they get more calories from actual food. As long as she's still gaining and you are giving her plenty of opportunity to drink as much as she wants, then don't worry if she doesn't have as much as in the past!
  • So my baby loved scrambled eggs..finely chopped of course.  Not much seasoning..he is 6 months old this week
  • kaym6kaym6 member
Thanks everyone! I'll stop being a wuss and let him try them lol
  • I tried watermelon this week, LO absolutely loved it! It's perfect because the rind makes it easy to hold and it's just soft enough that he can bite chunks off and chew them with his gums, though he usually just spits the chunks out after he sucks the juice out of them, but that's okay! He also devoured half a plum (except the skin) today, which kind of caught me by surprise, because I gave it to him as an afterthought haha

  • We are kind of doing a mix of baby led weaning and traditional puréed baby foods. In terms of our food, she has eaten carrots, green beans, scrambled eggs, strawberries, chicken (that she ate in tiny pieces off my finger) and chicken salad, banana, and zucchini. She likes most of it, except banana. She also tends to get frustrated when she can't pick up the food or get it into her mouth right. I put the strawberry in a mesh feeder and sometimes she can hold that herself. Her two bottom teeth are coming in, so she is able to scrape some of it off.

She does like the puréed sweet potatoes and a few other things. So I just need to start making those more for us so that she can have them fresh instead of from a jar

This is my favorite food pic so far!  She had pasta and loved it
  • mrsncmrsnc member
We too are big fans of cucumbers!
  • @KFrob that's adorable! She looks full and happy, just like anyone else after some pasta!
@mrsnc i love her red hair! I'm hoping Violet gets her daddy's red hair, it's not thick enough yet to tell if she's got daddy's red hair or mommy's blonde hair! Cucumbers are my favorite!

  • Cucumber is a big hit around here, too. We are doing a combo of BLW and traditional baby food. We send oatmeal and purees to daycare, because I don't feel like they can watch her closely enough. At home, she eats real food. She's only choked once, on watermelon, and a good finger sweep got that out. I think with her one tooth, watermelon was too crumbly. We also have done carrot sticks, zucchini, broccoli, bananas, and peaches. She's liked everything we've given her. We also are only waiting one day between new foods. Pediatrician said since we had no history of food allergies at all, we didn't need to wait at all, but I've kind of split the difference.
  • I was so neurotic about feeding DS but I've been much more laid back with DD. We are doing a combo of purees and BLW. So far she's had more fruits and vegetables than I can name as well as pizza crust, pickles, goat milk yogurt, and French fries. Ha!
  • My LO is LOVING solids! So far he's had carrots, sweet potatoes, and peas and recently we've been introducing fruit (through the mesh pacifier gadget lol) like mango, plum, and watermelon.

I mainly make the food myself and I find the smoother/more liquidy it is, the better he's able to eat it.
  • how cute!! I've got to try that with my LO!  :)
  • Literally everything we eat, baby eats. Granted I don't eat sugar and so she doesn't get anything like honey etc. Sometimes my husband will sneak her a bite of ice cream though.
  • kaym6kaym6 member
If your baby likes sweet potatoes and has had eggs I strongly recommend sweet potato pancakes! Sooo easy and he LOVED them!
  • KFrobKFrob member
@kaym6 I'm going to have to try those!!

Last night we tried watermelon. I think I cut it too big bc she had trouble picking it up. She also wasn't too sure what to make of it. She would bite a chunk off and then spit it out. She also kept putting the rind in her mouth, gagging on it, and then threw up. It was a learning experience for her for sure haha!

When we did watermelon we just gave one huge chunk and he just held it steady and bent over and bit off the top of it while it sat in his tray! He loved it!

We were doing a combination of BLW and purees but LO has just decided hes had enough of purees! Only 'real food' from here out!

@kvacmak some recipes had more ingredients than others I literally took leftover sweet potatoes from dinner smashed them with a fork mixed with an egg and a little cinnamon and cooked them like regular pancakes! Easy to pick up too!
  • What's everyone doing about LO getting enough iron? Or ped said if we weren't doing baby cereal to use the poly-vi-sol w iron. The stuff is absolutely awful. I can't even stand the smell of it. Today it was finally too much for babes and she projectile vomited all over my husband, couch, and floor. As of right now I'm giving in to the baby cereal but opted for a stage two multigrain thinking it might be closer to a texture she's used to and I'm going to mix in mashed fruit. Are others relying on meats and greens? I think I might be too worried about it

At this stage, they should be getting all of their nutrition still from breastmilk or formula. We are doing the baby oatmeal, just because breakfast occurs at daycare, and it's safer in a setting where LO isn't as closely monitored as she would be when she's the only baby. I always doctor it--I use formula to start, and then add some kind of fruit/veg blend (broccoli and apples is a winner), and add a little cinnamon, too. My girl goes nuts over it. I will say, however, that she gets a bottle first, and then eats after that.

@stephanienjer I may be wrong but I think what @KFrob means is with the decrease in breastmilk or formula intake now that they started solids and (I think I read this somewhere) babies after 6 months need more iron then before 6 months. I think shes wondering how everyone is adding more iron rather then baby cereal. I'm curious the answer too. Again I might be wrong on my facts so someone is free to correct me if I am!

  • Sooo weird this was on my Bump homepage today.
  • According to KellyMom "The original iron stores of a full-term healthy baby, combined with the better-absorbed iron in breastmilk, are usually enough to keep baby’s hemoglobin levels within the normal range well into the second six months."
    https://kellymom.com/nutrition/vitamins/iron/

I'm not stressing about it, I eat a tonne of red meat and green veg myself so I'm sure LO is getting enough from me. However he is eating a lot of greens, meats and grains like quinoa simply because that's what we eat a lot of.

I read that in kellymom as well but I'm still stressing it since I've also read so much about how detrimental anemia can be.... On the flip side I keep telling myself that babies survived long before iron fortified baby cereal existed!
  • Huh, our pedi didn't mention adding iron supplements of any kind.  LO is formula fed (we haven't started solids yet - doing it this weekend!) so I wonder if formula has enough iron in it that it's not a concern?

Also, I do not know why but I am SO intimidated by integrating solid foods into LO's diet.  I guess because there are so many options and methods and I have no idea what I'm doing, haha.  We're going to try avocado first, because she's a California baby and I think that's appropriate, and that should be very easy to mush up enough that she can easily eat it.  But after that I think we'll try baby food for a bit (veggies only) until she has the hang of it (1-2 months?) then do BLW.

I'm just not used to so many choices after only breastmilk or formula for half a year!
  • I'm EBF and our pediatrician didn't mention adding iron supplements either.  From what I've read, formula has plenty of iron in it already and there's some debate about whether it's necessary for breast fed babies

Our pediatrician only suggested that we include meats in the foods he's getting as a source of iron. He did not make a big deal about it and I EBF.

@maureenmce where in CA are you? I'm in the North Bay. We started with avocado too. I had wanted to do BLW but felt a little intimidated/scared when he got a big chunk of apple in his mouth. So now we're doing a somewhat modified plan. One of the things I liked best about BLW was that baby controls what he eats and how much, so we're sticking to foods that he can self feed. That could be a wedge of avocado (on the peel so he can hold on), a piece of cucumber, something in his mesh feeder, or mashed up foods (not too runny) that we load on his spoon and he then puts into his mouth (or doesn't). We did not have to teach him to put the spoon in his mouth-- he knew what to do on the first try. His aim could use some work though :)

I felt intimidated about it too, and even a little sad about him growing up, but now that we're doing it it's so fun to see his funny faces and the messes he manages to make. The dog lives under his high chair at meal times, so the whole family enjoys it. Good luck!
  • @mamadcb - We're in LA!  Hi to another Californian!  I used to live up north, but then came to LA for college and never left.  :)  Btw, when you did the avocado, did you just mash it up very thoroughly with your hands or a food processor?  Did you add a little milk or formula to make it soupier?  I think I'll start getting excited once I see her reaction (and yes, I'm sure our dog will love it, haha.)

Have you ever seen this animated short film with the dog who gets a bit ignored when its owner falls in love, but then is so happy when the baby is born and starts dropping food on the ground?  It's absolutely adorable.
