@no more miss- ok thanks! I wasn't sure if it was something I was eating or if that was just normal newborn stuff. Glad it's normal!
@Mfuller76 I think my little guy swallows a lot of air too because he eats fast and we are still working on his latch. Poor little babies! I'll try reclining while feeding, thanks!!
Does anyone else's baby not like their arms swaddled? DD keeps putting them by her face and with the newborn mitts on, I am afraid she is going to cover her nose while I'm not watching.
Stuck in the box.
We have this same issue. We have found that baby likes his hands by his side but he won't put them there himself. If we swaddle him with his hands out, he freaks, but we have to pin his hands down pretty hard to swaddle them at his side and it feels like we are torturing him. Nonetheless, once swaddled with his hands down, he always seems happier and more calm than when they are in his face.
Our pediatrician said that he probably had his hands up by his face in utero (he had them pinned up against his face for like the first 72 hours of his life straight). Good luck!
@midwestbaby my baby will fight it but I just hold them at his sides and swaddle him nice and tight and he calms pretty quickly..when I add the jiggle, side lying position and shhhhhh he's putty in my hands. Don't give up on the swaddle!!
Anyone else's hospital not use wipes? I delivered in a different hospital this time so I wasn't sure if it was the hospital or a sign of the times. Is my hospital just cheap? Haha. Or is there some sort of new recommendation I didn't know about?

They used gauze pads and wet them with water.
I know some places do this because of skin sensitivities or use water wipes. Our hospital used some cheap brand that I've never heard of. They seemed to dry her skin up bad in the first two days (but then again she had 7 poopy diapers in 12 hours). We are using the honest ones right now and triple paste and her bum looks better today (day 3).

I think this is pretty common, because the hospital with both babies did this (two different hospitals). Newborns have sensitive bottoms and the paper towel with water trick seems to irritate them less than commercial wipes.
@midwestbaby Avery always figures out how to get her arms out no matter how secure the swaddle is with arms at her sides! She loves sleeping w her arms up.
How much gas is normal for a newborn? As soon as baby starts eating I hear his intestines starting to rumble, and when he finishes eating he starts getting fussy and looks like he's in pain. Then he will pass a bunch of gas and/or poop and he's fine. But this happens almost after every feeding- is that normal? I am breastfeeding.
*I know with my first 2 they would get really gassy when I ate red sauce (pasta sauce/pizza etc), peanuts and chocolate. Good luck!!
@midwestbaby C loves his arms and hands being free and will often sleep with his arms up by his head. In all of our ultrasounds, he had at least one hand by his face so for us, it's just a continuation of what he was doing on the inside.
I just tried the swaddle with the arms to the side trick and so far so good, I dont remember who to tag but thanks! DD hated being swaddled so we never really did but we've noticed that G is super calm when he's swaddled nice and tight. The nurses get it the best and DH is pretty good but I suck at it.
So, my husband went to change Levis diaper... he's only changed a couple so far. Tonight was hilarious! Levi pooped on the clean diaper before he could finish putting it on. So dh yells for me to come help (not sure why, he was doing fine!). So I help him wipe his butt, and dh moves the diaper without having a new one ready, and gets poop on the changing cover (I just washed yesterday), and then Levi pees all over himself and the wall! I started laughing and told dh to strip him. Levi got a bath at 10 pm lol. I started another load of laundry, and I'm just remembering I forgot to clean the pee off the wall. It's been an exciting evening here! But I do now have a very clean, calm good smelling sleeping baby right now

Our hospital didn't use wipes, and our pedi recommended we don't start using them until J is at least two weeks old. We're using damp Viva paper towels for now.
Holy shit baby growth spurt at 5 weeks! She was always at around 4 oz intake per feeding but not yesterday! I knew she was extra fussy but it wasn't until this morning at 5 AM when I realized she was not satisfied with her regular intake. I breastfed and supplemented w formula. Just could not keep up w her demand. My boobs were totally deflated and raw!
She took about 7 oz total. Then woke up 2 hrs later hungry again.
The thing is, she also had a little bit of spit up (maybe from that last feeding session) so I wasn't sure if I should feed her right after but she sucked on her hand and cried.
She's on my chest as that seems to be her favorite place to fall asleep but she has random single cries here and there in her sleep. I need to get ready soon but to wake her up or not...
We had G circumcised earlier and that first diaper change was intimidating! We called the nurse and had her walk us through the first change. We also have gotten peed on every diaper change since and he gets good and pissed off by the time we are done.
@Lynnlove28@nomoremiss! Baby B's just healed and I feel like life is 100x's better! I was surprised how quickly it healed, for some reason I felt like DS1's took forever.
He wasn't circ'd until day 2, so we're only on day 3 of healing. Guess I should look back at the paperwork to see when I don't need petroleum jelly on it anymore.
I can't wait until DDs umbilical cord scab falls off. The way they clamped ir made it really long and diaper changes extra challenging (and ya know she loves diaper changes).

my DS's is on the pointy side too. He's stabbed me in the belly with it a few times, while BFing. It's so hot here, he is stripped down to a diaper at night time.

Levis healed about 5 or 6 days after it was done. We stopped using the vaseline once there was nothing to stick to the diaper, like the yellow discharge looking stuff.
@Stephanie7693 Yeah I feel guilty a lot with putting her down when she is awake or taking s nap of my own. My milk supply hasn't been the greatest and DH let me nap through one of her feedings yesterday and gave her formula. I feel so bad.

Yes to circ finally being healed! Day 6 he was oozing some yellow funk and I took him to his Peditrician to check it out. She took a culture, prescribed some super intense ointment, and then Sent us to ER in case it was infected. ER Doctor said it was about to fall off and it looked fine. Well last Monday I get a call that the culture came back positive for staph! Thank god it somehow had healed on its own. But I'm pissed. The ER dr should have seen that and by the grace of God this little man fought off the infection. He's fine now - but that was scary!!
@jacmkelley that is scary! So glad nothing terrible happened. Er docs scare me... so often they don't look hard enough. A couple years ago my daughter had mono, the er doc missed it. A couple days later she woke up saying she couldn't breathe. One of the scariest days of my life. And it could have been prevented.
@midwestbaby you shouldn't feel bad, you're still healing too! When I was in the hospital I sent Levi to the nursery a couple times. I felt zero guilt. I needed that time to rest and heal. But I did miss him. And it sounds like you have a great dh that can help you and cuddle dd
I think it's actually really good for baby to be put in his bed/rocker/mamaroo while awake. It helps them self soothe and a lot of times he will just fall asleep on his own without any fussing. Don't feel guilty!

A was circ'd last Saturday and we used petroleum jelly until Tuesday (so 4 days of it).
Finally home from the hospital and man it feels good! My parents are bringing DD home later after her nap, and I'm in some serious need of her snuggles so I hope she's feeling it! She didn't want much to do with me when they visited us in the hospital but I think it was just a lot for her to try and process.
Random question- I read to not let DS go more than 3/4 hours napping during the day so that he will sleep longer at night. My question is that sometimes he will eat and then be awake for like 1-2 hours afterwards just staring off then will take a nap. For example- he ate at 9 this morning didn't go down for a nap till 11 and now its 130 and he is still sleeping. Do I wake him to eat or continue to let him sleep because he has only really been asleep for 2 1/2 hours, but hasn't eaten in almost 5 hours.
Hope that all makes sense.

@msdidonato During the day I would feed him if it's been 3 hours since he ate, regardless of whether he's sleeping or not. So in the example you gave, he should be woken up at noon to eat. You want him to get lots of calories during the day so he doesn't need as many at night.
@msdidonato jr does this too. I just wake him up after 2 hours during the day. We will cuddle a bit and then he will feed for a while, I'll rub his back and wait for him to potty. I'll change him and then he will be up for like an hour or longer, then the process starts all over again. maybe wake him after only an hour if he was up for a long while before his nap. Or maybe feed him again before he goes down for the count - that's what I do if he's up longer than usual.
He wasn't circ'd until day 2, so we're only on day 3 of healing. Guess I should look back at the paperwork to see when I don't need petroleum jelly on it anymore.

His was done on the 6th and we just stopped putting Vaseline on it yesterday (one week post circ). I probably could have stopped a day before but was being extra cautious.
G loves his swing, I'm pretty sure it's the best thing ever invented! I got a good hour nap in earlier on the couch and he just slept away in it. I'm a little nervous for how this first night is gonna go but I don't think anything can be much worse than trying to sleep in a hospital.

Last week I was amazed at how many ladies here were still pregnant. Meanwhile my due date isn't until next Friday. I just ended up with a July baby instead.
Getting conflicting answers. Can you put a onesie on if you still have your umbilical stump?!
I've never been told not to, but I've always avoided it because it's hard not to snag it when getting them on and off. I bought most of our nb clothes in full zip or button outfits. Just a few onsies that we used after the cord fell off. Even though we were careful, ds cord got snagged a few times on diapers and started bleeding once. Luckily it was almost healed and didn't get infected.

what an awesome feeling to be home. Rest and relax momma, you earned it!
Hope your DD is feeling cuddly.
