You may need to go up a diaper size.  After we had two blowouts that was my cue that it was time to size up.  My DD was never even in newborn size and she was a size 2 at 5 weeks old lol.  We like Pampers, as well.  They're expensive, but we've found that diapers are one if those things that you get what you pay for.  Triple paste for cream.  I think there's a whole other thread about BF supplies that I replied to, as well.

  • Thank you!! It seems like the openings for the legs are too big on some brands so I'm not sure if going up a size would help, but the brand we'd been using was white cloud, after recommendation, but we're not liking them, so will definitely look into another brand.  I used parents choice off-brand for my older daughter and they always worked well but they seem different, she's five so they might be.

That was my main question, but wasn't sure if others would appreciate a place to ask about other baby products as more LOs arrive.

  • I second @SkiChic626 blow outs for us meant go up a size. We haven't had as many issues since. Also I've noticed - per @Stephanie7693 if you've got a boy point his penis down lol. That helped too!
We have both pampers and huggies right now. We got diapers as gifts. I am trying both at this point my fav is huggies snugglers for him.

  • I really like Pampers for our babies. And we put Aquaphor on them every time we do a diaper change to help prevent diaper rash. I've also heard putting Mustella on a wipe is great for preventing/helping with diaper rash. As far as other items are concerned, we are getting a ton of use out of the Rock N Plays and the Boppy Lounger pillows.

  • Pampers here too. They seem to be working well so far. We also love the boppy. So far I dont love the swaddle we bought, but I think it is still a little big. I have a new kind on order.

  • Pampers are our preferred brand (DS1 always leaked with huggies).

As for swaddles, I'm just wrapping his legs in a hospital blanket for now but when he's a bit bigger we'll use the SwaddleMe swaddles. They worked really well last time.
  • I love the Boppy Lounger, too!

  • I'm a FTM so I don't know how to recognize diaper rash.  His butt is red, should I be using Aquaphor during diaper changes?
  • @entropicallyfavored It definitely can't hurt! That's what our pedi recommended and it has helped with the redness. You can also do a combination of Aquaphor/Desitin (or whatever cream of your choice) to help prevent.

  • I've always preferred pampers with my DS so that's what I've stocked up on for DD. Right now in the NB size though the Huggies are also working well - she has such a petite bottom!! Lol. Also I prefer pampers sensitive wipes, they seem to be stronger than Huggies brand. Nobody wants a torn wipe in the middle of a change!

as for diaper creams, I bounce back and forth between A&D and desitin. If a little pink looking, I apply A&D every change. If very red or starting to look more like an actual rash or if no improvement with A&D then I switch to the desitin which generally clears it up in about a day.

  • We're a pampers family, but we've had only boys, so not sure if that impacts it.

I use aquaphor for all diaper changes, unless a rash has started, then I find desitin is the fastest for clearing it up.

I used nipple shields with DS1 and have started to with DS2 as well, but this time I got the medela ones. They're a little more expensive than the other brands, but totally worth it! They stay put even with the thrashing that DS does, and the shape just seems like a better fit.

  • I'm a FTM so I don't know how to recognize diaper rash.  His butt is red, should I be using Aquaphor during diaper changes?
You should be able to tell. Is it the inside of his bum that's red?  We use a&d on all diapers (then put desitin on the diaper rash itself if he has one). With DS1 he rarely had rashes, mostly when he was sick or was pooping a lot.
  • For diapers, I've tried Huggies, honest, up&up, Costco, and pampers. Pampers wins hands down every time. Oh and maybe I'm a sucker but that little indicator strip? Amazing. I'm sold.

I freaking love Costco wipes. They are thick and get all the yuckies up real quick. We usually just use aquaphor for everything rash-related.

I swear by boudreaux butt paste for a rash. Diapers we have tried and worked for us below

    Pampers swaddlers (Excellent diapers)
Pampers baby dry (Great diapers but have had leaks with them)
    Huggies little snugglers (Excellent diapers)
Huggies overnights (Really are great for overnight)
Huggies snug & dry (great diapers but same as baby dry pampers)
Huggies cruisers or little movers (Excellent diapers)
Target Brand (we loved these but then they changed the quality and we no longer liked them)
Luvs (I have a love hate relationship with Luvs...use only if no other choice)
Babies r us brand (Really good diapers especially when you can get them for $10 or $5 come Black Friday)
    CVS brand (Excellent diapers)
    Walmart brand (There ok)
SAMs club brand (We just got these and we are liking them)

Also really like the wipes from SAMs they are not to soft or to rough.

  • Had anyone tried the new Aldi brand diapers and wipes?  (Actually not sure if Aldi is nationwide, maybe it's a local store...)  Their prices are great, but not sure about the quality.
  • Has anyone bought or uses little remedies? I purchased the new parents survival kit. My mother made me feel real bad about, she said why would I get that instead of taking him to the hospital and what if it gets recalled by the time I use it.  :/

    What is it?
  • That's what I was saying, he doesn't have to go to the hospital for everything, unless something is persistent or severe early on. She feels prescription everything is better. She just confused me and irritated me.

Well unless she wants to pay your medical bills and you want your local hospital to think you're a hypocondriac (sp?) then yeah, you can use over the counter meds (or saline which isn't even medicine) to treat minor illnesses.  I'm irritated for you lol
  • I have a small stash of that kind of stuff too. Those kinds of issues do not require a trip to the hospital lol. Is gripe water included in that kit? If not you should add some to it ;)
  • @MrsEWilson - Maybe your mom doesn't realize that over medicating can cause problems in the long run.  (Not that you shouldn't medicate when necessary) I am now allergic to several medications due to having them so often for ear infections, when I was young.  I am now at the point that I don't take medications unless I absolutely need to. I have had far too many severe reactions to risk taking them for every little thing.

The hospital is absolutely the last place you want your newborn. Unless your baby is absolutely ill you don't want them there. Little remedies drops are great use them with both of my kids.
  • Poor peanut has seemed to develop serious gas the last 3 days, and now its affects his feedings. He went from 30min average to 15 minutes the last day. Literally squirms in pain to cramps. I hate how he throws his head & arches his back. The last few times he yanked is his latch off doing so. He doesn't cry much, so DH reasons its normal. Doesn't seem normal to me. We called the nurse line after 2 days of projectile diarrhea, but it fizzled out and she said it sounded like a growth spurt. Its hard with BF. I already avoid milk, but am now questioning if its still my diet causing his gas. We tried the gas Sim. drops from little remedies but it worked minimally. Trying to wait to use the gripe water until he is 2 wks. A few more days.
  • @lblu43 baby B has been doing something similar. Probably 3 feedings a day, he will squirm and cry off and on. The nurse said it's normal, but I'm wondering if it's something I'm eating. I don't really eat much dairy (nurse said is the most common cause), but I may try cutting it out completely to see if it helps.

  • @Bookhousegirl - dd1 had a horrible time with dairy.  I noticed it pretty quickly but it took a few weeks for the dairy to get completely out of my system.  Her gas slowly got better but took a while to completely go away, even after I completely stopped eating dairy.  I was ready to start eating it again because I figure it must be something else since I hadn't had dairy in a couple weeks.  Someone told me to wait a couple more weeks and within that time the gas was gone.
  • I have to say the little wrap t shirts and long sleeve shirts have been clutch. I have so many cute onesies I was to out on her but with her stump I was told to not cover it. I just out little leggings on to keep legs warm
  • @Sekerambo good to know that it might take a couple of weeks. I'm going to cut it out for the next few weeks and see if anything changes.

  • This has probably already been discussed but I have a diapers question. It seems that he keeps peeing out of pampers but he pees up the back of them almost. I can't tell if it's the diaper itself or something we are doing wrong. Any advice?
  • @Lynnlove28 try pointing his penis down when you diaper him. I didn't realize this with DS 1 and he'd pee out the diaper every time.

  • @mermaidbina I've been trying to but his circ is so fresh that I'm not going anywhere near it. We put a huggies diaper on him since we've been home just to see if it's the diaper or not.

When I was worried about circ and diaper issue because we had the same issue - I used huggies too. It seemed to help. But once everything heals I bet the pampers will be fine
  • @Lynnlove28 Do you use a gauze square to cover his penis? When my DS was circ'd, I squeezed Vaseline onto the square and then covered his penis.

  • @lblu43 @Bookhousegirl I can't remember where I posted it- maybe in the breastfeeding thread- but I'm having the same issues! About 15-30 min after breastfeeding I can hear my LO's guts moving and he starts fussing and looking like he's in so much pain until he passes gas! And he has so much gas. A couple nights he's also thrown up. I thought maybe it was the spicy food I've been eating so I'm eliminating that.. But maybe I should try dairy too?
