Best baby basics

Re: Best baby basics

  • @telicious2 they had us use it for the first few changes but now we just put it directly on the diaper.

  • @Lynnlove28 Are they having you put Vaseline on his diaper and/or penis until the circ is healed? Our dr had us cover the front part of ds's diaper with Vaseline to prevent his raw penis from sticking to it. He leaked everytime he peed. We finally figured out the the Vaseline was blocking all the absorbency in the front of the diaper so the pee had nowhere to go but out. We had tried pampers & buggies. Once we stopped using the Vaseline we had no more leakage.

  • Yep, I just dealt with the leaking and 3 to 4 outfit changes a day until Levis circ was healed. There isn't much you can do to keep it in with having to use vaseline and not being able to touch his penis
  • We swear by Little Remedies for DS. The Tylenol, gas reliever and gripe water were life savers.

  • @squishy0511 the lactation consultant said dairy is the most common cause so I'm starting with that. It doesn't seem to bother him a whole lot, but just the amount of gas he has seems extreme and last night he was whining and grunting a lot more. I may try the gas drops too, to see if it will help.

@Lynnlove28 once DS's circ was healed and we could point his penis down, we had no more leaking issues. The first five days, though, he basically leaked every time he peed.

  • When DS was little I really loved Pampers, hands down those were the best diapers. When he started crawling around though, Huggies seemed to really do the trick. I'm curious to see how this system works with DD. Pampers sensitive wipes are my favorite wipes though. For creams, Desitin seems to be the one that I keep reaching for. Once when DS had a bad diaper rash, the pedi recommended layering Neosporin underneath the diaper cream to help since the pharmacy was closed and I wouldn't be able to get an antibiotic ointment. Worked like a charm! From then on I always try that first if I see a bad rash coming on.

I second @jkershaw2013's recommendation of the little wrap tops when they still have the umbilical cord stump. Both the Boppy Lounger (when they are really little) and the Boppy were a must have for me. I still can't live without the Little Remedies Saline Drops for when DS has a cold. I've even used them myself being preggo and not able to take anything. Sleep sacks were another must have when DS was little, he wasn't able to sleep in his crib without being swaddled, and the swaddle sleep sacks took out the need to think in the middle of the night.

I'm seriously considering purchasing this little do-hicky:

It's a spatula for wiping on diaper cream. I know it's completely unnecessary, but I always hate having diaper cream still on my hands and I wonder if in the long run it's more hygienic to use something to apply the cream. Especially since now we are having a girl and there's more folds and orifices lol

  • @Ceventa we bought the spatula and love it! It seems like a silly small purchase, but it makes diaper changes go quick. I can put on her diaper cream easily from a jar (we use triple paste) and my hands aren't all gunky after so I can nurse her faster after a change.

  • @ceventa and @midwestbaby For those of you interested in a disposable option, I use a q-tip like you use the spatula.
  • @Sekerambo Thanks for the info! I guess cheese will also be avoided for now too. It's really hard to watch him squirm. Last night he was up every hour cluster feeding, leaving little to no sleep time for me between the nursing & burping. DH helps amap but can only do so much until we start pumping.  It's  gonna be a long day.
  • @lblu43- I hope you are able to get some sleep.  It is so hard watching them squirm.  Hopefully his schedule will shift to cluster feeding during the day.  The first few weeks of breastfeeding are definitely the hardest.  I promise it gets easier!
