-21+3! - Pregnancy is going great this week, although since week 20 I've been getting hellacious heartburn, even before I eat. Zantac 150 has been a lifesaver.
-I want to do placenta encapsulation, but I don't think my doula does it. I'm too lazy to hire someone else to do it and spend that money. Fingers crossed I don't regret not eating it.
Interested in seeing what others have to say about the eating and drinking during labor!
1 - How far along are you? 19w6 2 - Overall, how is pregnancy going this week? Bleh 3 - Are you gonna eat it? (Your placenta) If I have a healthy one to eat- yep (capsuled though- no other way!) I really do think it helped (but no idea if it was specific to that pregnancy or how any of that works). I figure, I can always encapsulate it and if it doesnt work/I don't like it, then just stop taking it....
BTDT bonus: did you eat/drink during labor last time? If so, what foods/drinks? I didnt other than water, but only because it happened so quickly... 4 hours start to finish (and we were driving for about half that time which BTW- SUCKED), got to the hospital at 9cm (whoops) and DD was out 30min later. I had PLANNED on drinking/eating whatever I wanted- including wine!! (doula said lots of mamas like to do that and I was super excited to since I had abstained all pregnancy....)
1. 21+4 2. This week has been good. Not a lot of crazy symptoms and I've been sleeping good too. My biggest complaint is how often I'm hungry. It's like, "Seriously? I just fed you!" 3. I have heard great things about it, but I don't know. My husband almost had to pull the car over to be sick when I told him that was a thing. So there's that.
Q: So I have been getting a little more leery of the med free thing as it becomes more real to me. Anyone else feel like they might chicken out? Also, someone mentioned online that epidurals block endorphins that help your baby not feel pain during birth. I'd never heard that before. Anyone heard of that? I know, I know, LMGTFY.com but sometimes the people on google are more irrational and extreme.
1 - How far along are you? 20 weeks today! 2 - Overall, how is pregnancy going this week? Good, I'd say. Had my A/S yesterday, which seemed like it went well. At least I know my baby has a beautiful spine and a nasal bone, if nothing else. Currently struggling with some intense muscle pain two days after a super leg-focused workout, but that's not even pregnancy-related. That's just me whining. 3 - Are you gonna eat it? (Your placenta) H has put the kibosh on encapsulation Which only makes me want to do it more, you know? Haha.
Not a BTDT, but I'm definitely planning on having snacks around during labor! I'm interested to hear what everyone else found the least repulsive during birth. I can't imagine I'll be wanting to munch on a steak dinner or anything.

@caseyewhitaker I think being worried about it is super normal- I've done it before and sometimes am like- CAN I DO THAT AGAIN!?!?! For me, I figure it's best to be prepared for med free because what if you're the one person that the epidural doesn't work for!? That would be no fun. When I start to get worried about being able to do it again,I start to imagine visions of giant needles going into my spine... that usually does the trick (not sure that that will help when time actually comes though haha!)
So an epidural would make the baby feel more pain, is what they were saying?
Oh and, my recommendation for hesitant husbands: 1) do NOT let them smell the capsules (it's not really a great smell...).........and your dog (if you have one) will be ALL over them like treats, so keep them away too!!
2) Ask them next time you're having a pregnancy melt down if they wished you had a pill that could make it better- enter placenta capsules!!
@Toller02 you're right about that, a variety of things could happen that would prevent an epidural or it not do its job. I'm not even a weeny about pain, I've just been watching youtube birth videos and getting a little unsure about my original wishes. Watching ladies get one and take a nap is seductive.
Yes, that's what was alleged, that the baby would feel pain while you're not.
@caseyewhitaker omg our doula made us watch a birth video at almost every bradley class....it was TERRIFYING!!!!!!!!! the more you watch, the better you handle them though I think- so probably keep watching I saw a water birth one that made me want one SO BAD because it looked sooo peaceful!!!!!!
Well damn- not sure if that's true, but if that wouldn't throw crazy guilt on a mama, idk what would! I'm going to poke around do some research on that....
2 - Overall, how is pregnancy going this week? No complaints. Still in a sweet spot
3 - Are you gonna eat it? (Your placenta) I was thinking no. But the. I was sitting with three friends with kids of similar age and we all are it with our firsts. None of us had ppd or ppa. The three other friends of mine that gave birth the same time frame did not eat it and all had ppa or ppd. Entirely unscientific but it sort of leans me toward taking it home again to have the option.
BTDT bonus: did you eat/drink during labor last time? If so, what foods/drinks?
Ha I realize now that a good question after that last one was maybe poor form. I had a really intense and long labor. I had fruit smoothies in the beginning. Then after like 7 hours when I progressed from 2.5 to 3 cm (Fml) i started convulsing and puking but I was glad I had them anyway. They came up gentle and it was better than bile so I foresee doing that again this time.
For what it's worth, I cannot see how anyone could go into labor and delivery without being somewhat scared. It's a crazy process. However, meds don't make it go smoother every time. For me, I have to do a certain amount of bracing myself for a wild ride and focus more on the aspect that it's truly going to be done. And when it is, I'll no longer be pregnant. I feel like that takes a LOT of the fear away for me
2 - Overall, how is pregnancy going this week? Pretty good. Found my doula. Booked my birth classes. Got multiple recommendations for a med-free birth friendly OB in the area I'm going to be moving. Feeling more prepared.
3 - Are you gonna eat it? (Your placenta) Nope. One, FI is pretty grossed out by the idea. Two, I can't really find enough studies to show it definitely is beneficial. Three, I can't even swallow a pill so there's that...
BTDT bonus: did you eat/drink during labor last time? If so, what foods/drinks? Never BTDT, but I'm hoping the hospital will let me. If not, I'll probably sneak in some water and maybe some snacks in my bag
Joining in here because I really want to try for med-free after watching The Business of Being Born last week. It really made me think about the domino effect of interventions and I don't want to end up in that cycle if I can help it.
1 - How far along are you? 21 + 1 2 - Overall, how is pregnancy going this week? Can't complain! Feeling good, just super hot with this awful humidity we've had the past few days. 3 - Are you gonna eat it? (Your placenta) Probably not. Honestly, it freaks me out a little bit and there isn't a ton of evidence to back it up to help me get past that feeling.
1 - How far along are you? 20 weeks 2 - Overall, how is pregnancy going this week? I feel like I'm a zombie.... I am thinking my iron might be low. And that I've eaten less than ideal camp food for the last 3 months! Boo... but it's our last week of camp and I'll get some spinach and some steaks! 3 - Are you gonna eat it? (Your placenta) Gag... NO! I might try it in capsules, but I haven't yet... so probably not... No flames for those of you who do! You rock!
BTDT bonus: did you eat/drink during labor last time? If so, what foods/drinks? With my 1st two I didn't really labor during meal times so it was mostly just water or energy drinks. My 3rd I ate a turkey sandwich and had water. During my 4th I had chicken noodle soup about 2 hours before having her. Really, I don't think about it much, food isn't what's on my mind at the time...
But... beware about the red raspberry leaf ... it makes my uterus very irritable... I can't drink it or I have false labor for hours afterward. It might be effective during labor if things stall. However, I have friends who it does nothing for... so it's effects vary greatly.
@maamawaabangi I've been drinking pregnancy tea with RRL in it since I hit second trimester. You think I'm okay if I haven't been experiencing anything yet, right?
Also, I don't remember if I've mentioned this before, but has anyone looked into dates and labor? (The food, not the nice thing you do with your partner!) I'm definitely going to try it out.

@PensiveCrayon I've heard a little about this, more that they're really good for you to eat while pregnant because of vitamins and that sort of thing. This was cheerful news to me because they're one of my favorite snacks. My favorite ways to eat them are just by themselves, by themselves with almond butter, or make a smoothie bowl and take some scissors and cut them into dime sized chunks and stir them in. I like having something sweet and chewy to munch on around the smoothie and the granola.
@PensiveCrayon yes you're probably one who doesn't react to it... It gets worse for me as I get near the end too... The effects are Almost like early labor, and then it will stop... Which at first was very confusing for me. I just stay away from it totally now. It's just not worth feeling miserable or hopeful over. Never heard of the benefits of dates... Share info please! I bet a date smoothy during early labor would be palatable and very fortifying. At some point in labor I find that food isn't so great because your body starts do intentionally clean itself out... So after that point it's sort of counterproductive
1 - How far along are you? 20+3 2 - Overall, how is pregnancy going this week? everything is fine with baby, I feel LO moving a lot more. I have been really suck this week. I actually went to the hospital on monday night bc I felt so bad. 3 - Are you gonna eat it? (Your placenta) nope, I have no desire to at all. I also never had and ppd after any of my pregnancies. I always felt really good.
BTDT bonus: did you eat/drink during labor last time? If so, what foods/drinks? With DD I went to the hospital bc I was having contractions and when the dr checked me she accidentally broke my water even though I was only 2 cm and should have gone home. But since I wasn't in active la or yet they let me order breakfast. Then I didn't eat anything until after she was born. I don't remember if they offered Popsicles or not. I know as I was holding her the nurse gave me some apple juice and the peanut butter sandwich crackers. They tasted so good. If they offer Popsicles again I will take them up on it.
@caseyewhitaker I definitely have my doubts about going med free as well. I had 2 great epidural births. And I have been hearing stories lately of women who have had both epidural and med free and they all said they would prefer epidurals. I never had any of the bad side effects of the epidural that some people have. So I am worried that I will cave.
2 - Overall, how is pregnancy going this week? Good, considering. Last Thursday my stepdad died in a car accident and I went home to prepare/plan everything with/for my mom. It's been a rough week and I haven't slept much. Everything at my appointment today seemed fine. They just advised me to get tons of rest now that everything has passed and I'm back home. Easier said than done with a toddler, but I'll figure it out.
3 - Are you gonna eat it? (Your placenta) No
BTDT bonus: did you eat/drink during labor last time? If so, what foods/drinks? They gave me jello, but it came back up. Otherwise I had water and a gatorade type drink.
So it's my first time checking in on this thread. I'm trying to be optimistic about my chances of going med-free but also have a bit of realism tossed in there that I might back out.
1 - How far along are you? 23 weeks today
2 - Overall, how is pregnancy going this week? Pretty solid! I felt him kick with my hand for the first time the other day, so that was exciting. Mainly i'm just tired - which isn't debilitating so I can't really complain.
3 - Are you gonna eat it? (Your placenta) Umm no. Even if I was so inclined, I think my DH would pass out if I even talked about it.
Q - The hospital I'm delivering in offers "labor tubs" and I am very interested in those. Does anyone have any experience laboring in a tub for a long period of time? They no longer do water births, even though that's something I would definitely want to try.
@karmba No personal experience, but from everything I've read the water sounds awesome. I'd totally take advantage of it if it's available to you. My hospital doesn't have tubs. I'm considering talking to my doc about renting one and bringing it with us. I guess some places let you. And others look at you like your crazy. Haha.
@karmba my hospital offers the same thing. They let you labor in them but you have to get out to deliver. When I was home before I went to the hospital with DS I sat in a tub and it really helped ease the pain. I hope to take advantage of the labor tub this time around.
@karmba ... I've labored in water with each of mine and I find it essential for labor. Quite literally, it helps me dilate and relax like nothing else. I had to get out with my 1st two as they had meconium in the amniotic fluid... they want to suction them right as their head comes out when this happens. And it did not make me happy to have to get out. With my second he was almost born on the walk from the tub to the bed... which was not cool. My last two were delivered in water and it's amazingly helpful! It's totally my "epidural".
1 - How far along are you? 23 weeks 2 - Overall, how is pregnancy going this week? Pretty good - I've had more energy than usual, got to hear his heartbeat at my appt, and went to the chiropractor today which will hopefully help with achey back. Heartburn is getting annoying... 3 - Are you gonna eat it? (Your placenta) I'm on the fence. I don't think I can justify any extra expense, but I do think I'm at risk for PPD and would definitely want to do whatever I could to prevent it.
1 - How far along are you? 23+5 2 - Overall, how is pregnancy going this week? We just moved to our new house and I am exhausted driving multiple trips to pick up the last of the stuff/clean out the rental. Other than that I am pretty good. 3 - Are you gonna eat it? (Your placenta) No.
BTDT bonus: did you eat/drink during labor last time? If so, what foods/drinks? DH kept shoving pancakes in my face at the hospital and I threw it all back up, so really just ice chips and water that I kept down.
As far as tub labor-I was only in it at the very end before pushing, and I found pushing to be difficult in the tub-I can't remember exactly which was the problem, but either my ass floated when I pushed and they wanted it to be down, or I couldn't push while floating and they kept telling me to stop pushing my butt to the bottom of the tub. So I ended up getting out to push, which was fine because of other things I ended up needing to do to turn DS at the last minute.
The shower, however, was amazeballs. I couldn't have survived without it, and the 60 minutes total I was out in bed for heartrate monitoring were the absolute worst-being in the shower was a life saver.
1. 24 + 2 2. Pretty good barring intermittent insomnia and poor sleep 3. Nope
BTDT: I've eaten lunch prior to going to the hospital for both of my previous births. Since my labors after checking in to the hospital have been relatively short, I haven't been all that concerned about snacks/drinks until afterwards.
@karmba, I'd also check with your acquaintances and/or local Facebook mom groups to try to get a feel for how experienced/trained/supportive the staff at the hospital is with women laboring in tubs. Some of the things I've read recently about one of the few hospitals in my state that offers this option (beginning ~ 2012) makes me question how supportive various hospital staffs may actually be and/or how well trained they are in its use initially.
1 - How far along are you? 24 weeks 2 - Overall, how is pregnancy going this week? Seeing as it's 3:30 am right now and I'm doing this not good lol. I've had wicked heartburn lately which is the main cause of my pregnancy insomnia. I'm starving because the baby is going through a growth spurt. Other than that it's been great. Headaches have finally stopped! 3 - Are you gonna eat it? (Your placenta). Not a chance. Might save it and plant it with a tree. When I was a baby we planted a tree when I was born so I would kind of like to make a tradition out of it.
1. 24 weeks! 2. Everything is going smoothly. I feel a lot more aches and pains with this second pregnancy but I'm more active than I was last time. I've also seen quite a jump in the scale which makes me a little sad but at the same time IDGAF. 3. Definitely not eating it. I don't judge those who do but I find it strange and it's not for me.
bonus: I don't recall eating or drinking anything during labor last time. I stopped and ate on te drive to the hospital, though. I labored in the hospital for 7hrs and food never crossed my mind.
@karmba I HIGHLY recommend taking full advantage of the labor tub. I think I sat in the for at least 2-3hrs and it was glorious. Make sure it has the water jets, though! I think it also helped prevent tearing but I have no clinical proof of this besides my own self.
My hospital only has a shower, so I'm going to try that. Wish I had a labor tub, though! The labor room also has labor balls, a DVD player, and a lot of space for me to walk around. Even though I won't have the home birth I originally wanted, I think I will have a good experience!

FWIW the labor tub was just constricting for me. The shower actually did offer me a little relief.
As a FTM I've obviously never given birth, but what interests me about laboring in a tub is my experience with having a kidney stone. I could be in absolute misery, then I would get in the tub, and the pain would exponentially subside. I took so many baths I actually had my phone in a ziplock bag in there - I lived in the tub until that sucker passed. I'm wondering if being in water for labor might have a similar effect for me.
Now, a lot of people say kidney stones are comparable to labor, I don't know if I believe them though. I saw the size of that kidney stone and a typical baby is about the size of my 7.5lb dog that is sleeping on my feet right now. Pretty sure I would like pushing her through a lot less than I did that miserable kidney stone. I guess the good news is that it won't be a week's worth of suffering first.
Even so, the whole time I had that awful thing I kept thinking, "this is still better than a migraine." Is it odd that in spite of my childbirth fears I'm still sort of "looking forward" to feeling it for myself so I can compare it to the other two?
1. 20+3 2. Going pretty well. Once just have less patience than usual and get tired quickly (probably more related to chasing around my almost 2 yr old DS) 3. I'm considering it. I didnt first time around and was perfectly fine but, who knows.
BTDT: I ate greek yogurt for some protein. Easy to get down quickly and give me some energy.

Different holes for the birth and the kidney stone. The vagina can be freaking incredible in it's ability to morph for birth and then return to it's original state (not always but mine did). It's like a wormhole opening up in space. But it is not weird at all to be pumped for labor. Actually, maybe it is, but if so, I'm weird too. When we get closer I'll be all like "PUT ME IN COACH I GOT THIS!!" ...which is part of my challenge in being able to relax and let my body take the lead while my "self" takes a ride.
ETA: last time my midwife brought over a mirror so I could watch the baby come out. It's by far the most amazing thing I've ever seen in my life. It's like finding out you're actually an x-men or a transformer and you had no idea... all this time...
Ha! interesting analogy with the transformers. Bodies are amazing. (And yes, I'm aware that there's a size/hole difference with the ureter and the vagina.)
2 - Overall, how is pregnancy going this week? Pretty ok. Starting to have some reflux issues and she's starting to push stuff up; finding I'm getting winded a lot easier, and what seems like a lot sooner than I remember with DS.
3 - Are you gonna eat it? (Your placenta) Nope. Still on the fence about encapsulating it
BTDT bonus: did you eat/drink during labor last time? If so, what foods/drinks?
Yes, even with an Epi, which was nice. I stuck with PB crackers, applesauce, fruit pops, and coconut water

This! I didn't want a mirror with DS, and I regretted it. I had one with DD and loved it. It gave me more motivation when I was pushing. However, when I went on the hospital tour they said a lot of women think they want a mirror, the bring it in and 5 minutes later it is back out in the hall.
I agree with @slartybartfast ... I don't think that comparing labor to any other kind of pain is ever very accurate... for one the pain is generally intermittent and not continuous unlike other types of pain. Second, it's more of a muscle being used sort of pain... like when your legs hurt from running... but even that is continuous and doesn't end like labor pains. Then at the end, slarty is right... a vagina is incredible! Men are always saying how amazing their penis' are for their ability to grow, but women's vagina's have that same (but different) capacity. Last week I shared that I always think I'll split in two... but that's more the pressure and complete intensity, not really the pain. If I used one word to describe birth it would be "intense"... not painful.
The benefit to tubs is that it relieves the pressure by making you buoyant (less intensity) ... and the heat relaxes your muscles that are tense and hurting.
I'm hesitant to put this out there because I don't want it to scare people but... @maamawaabangi - your description of labor is sooooo not what I experienced. Even from the get-go. So I guess I'll just add, even though I would describe labor as being mind-blowingly painful, that is still normal and ok. The thing that would have helped me to hear is that - yes this WILL end and YES THIS IS NORMAL AND OK. because unless it's not and things are going wrong health-wise, I can handle it. I had this understanding of birth being like many of the labors I'd read and when it wasn't I felt I'd been dealt a load of crap.
To make a long story short - healthy labor can go MANY different ways and result in MANY different experiences for people. I think that's part of the reason it feels like such a good idea to have support during it - for me this means a doula because with the options available to me, midwives and OBs check in to make sure nothing is going south and then to catch the baby.
But yea - I know many many people who describe labor in the same way as @maamawaabangi - but then also many that have had completely different experiences but there's a lot to appreciate about the whole thing either way. I would have really benefited by reading a birth story like the one I wrote beforehand so that I didn't end up dealing with feelings of mistrust for everything I'd been coached on and told. However, I think others handle it better in the moment and don't need to have those kinds of possibilities in their head beforehand, because, chances are, they won't experience it like that! So... for what any of that is worth...
@slartybartfast I really appreciate reading everyone's birth experience, from the good to the bad. I like feeling as prepared as I can be for every possible scenario. While I really appreciate @maamawaabangi because it makes me feel empowered that I can handle it... it is equally as empowering to here "yeah, it could also REALLY suck, but you've got this and it's still completely normal"
When I said I wanted to compare them it was for my own information, out of my own curiosity. Not so I could inform others one is worse than the other. Every single person experiences pain differently. My migraine pain and kidney stone pain definitely wasn't in the same place or caused by the same thing, but I can compare them myself and say, "I definitely enjoyed this less than that." That's all.

2 - Overall, how is pregnancy going this week? Bleh
3 - Are you gonna eat it?
2. This week has been good. Not a lot of crazy symptoms and I've been sleeping good too. My biggest complaint is how often I'm hungry. It's like, "Seriously? I just fed you!"
3. I have heard great things about it, but I don't know. My husband almost had to pull the car over to be sick when I told him that was a thing. So there's that.

Currently struggling with some intense muscle pain two days after a super leg-focused workout, but that's not even pregnancy-related. That's just me whining.
3 - Are you gonna eat it? (Your placenta) H has put the kibosh on encapsulation
Not a BTDT, but I'm definitely planning on having snacks around during labor! I'm interested to hear what everyone else found the least repulsive during birth. I can't imagine I'll be wanting to munch on a steak dinner or anything.

So an epidural would make the baby feel more pain, is what they were saying?
1) do NOT let them smell the capsules (it's not really a great smell...).........and your dog (if you have one) will be ALL over them like treats, so keep them away too!!
2) Ask them next time you're having a pregnancy melt down if they wished you had a pill that could make it better- enter placenta capsules!!
Yes, that's what was alleged, that the baby would feel pain while you're not.
Well damn- not sure if that's true, but if that wouldn't throw crazy guilt on a mama, idk what would! I'm going to poke around do some research on that....
21+1
2 - Overall, how is pregnancy going this week?
Pretty good. Found my doula. Booked my birth classes. Got multiple recommendations for a med-free birth friendly OB in the area I'm going to be moving. Feeling more prepared.
3 - Are you gonna eat it? (Your placenta)
Nope.
1 - How far along are you? 21 + 1
2 - Overall, how is pregnancy going this week? Can't complain! Feeling good, just super hot with this awful humidity we've had the past few days.
3 - Are you gonna eat it? (Your placenta) Probably not. Honestly, it freaks me out a little bit and there isn't a ton of evidence to back it up to help me get past that feeling.
2 - Overall, how is pregnancy going this week? Good! H bought me a Snoogle and I have never slept better being preggo! Totally worth the money!
3 - Are you gonna eat it? (Your placenta) Yes, encapsulated. I'll need as much help as I can get, even if it's all in my head.
2 - Overall, how is pregnancy going this week? I feel like I'm a zombie.... I am thinking my iron might be low.
This sounds like a delightful alternative to water in labor, however...

But... beware about the red raspberry leaf ... it makes my uterus very irritable... I can't drink it or I have false labor for hours afterward. It might be effective during labor if things stall. However, I have friends who it does nothing for... so it's effects vary greatly.

Also, I don't remember if I've mentioned this before, but has anyone looked into dates and labor? (The food, not the nice thing you do with your partner!) I'm definitely going to try it out.

yes you're probably one who doesn't react to it...

2 - Overall, how is pregnancy going this week? everything is fine with baby, I feel LO moving a lot more.

2 - Overall, how is pregnancy going this week? Pretty good - I've had more energy than usual, got to hear his heartbeat at my appt, and went to the chiropractor today which will hopefully help with achey back. Heartburn is getting annoying...
3 - Are you gonna eat it? (Your placenta) I'm on the fence. I don't think I can justify any extra expense, but I do think I'm at risk for PPD and would definitely want to do whatever I could to prevent it.
2 - Overall, how is pregnancy going this week?
2. Pretty good barring intermittent insomnia and poor sleep

2 - Overall, how is pregnancy going this week? Seeing as it's 3:30 am right now and I'm doing this not good lol. I've had wicked heartburn lately which is the main cause of my pregnancy insomnia. I'm starving because the baby is going through a growth spurt. Other than that it's been great. Headaches have finally stopped!
3 - Are you gonna eat it? (Your placenta). Not a chance. Might save it and plant it with a tree. When I was a baby we planted a tree when I was born so I would kind of like to make a tradition out of it.
2. Going pretty well. Once just have less patience than usual and get tired quickly (probably more related to chasing around my almost 2 yr old DS)
3. I'm considering it. I didnt first time around and was perfectly fine but, who knows.
BTDT:
I ate greek yogurt for some protein. Easy to get down quickly and give me some energy.

Due December 27th with baby #7
