Still terrified by all the local athletes coming home in a few weeks. I'm in Ireland now and my family was saying that it'll be global next month when everyone traveling home from Rio gets bitten by their local mosquitoes. I hadn't realized it was something they were seriously worried about.
The CDC isn't worried about it. I'm not panicking just yet. Just be aware and wear your bug spray! I've spent countless hours outside this summer and have been bitten 3 times! And all three of those were before I put on my bug spray.
In regards to that article, bogus source aside, something else to consider is that Zika virus may not be detected but that doesn't mean it was never present, and lack of access to medical care or financial blocks may prevent many microcephaly cases from ever being formally diagnosed, that doesn't mean they weren't legitimate cases.
And remember this is "simply a virus?" So is HIV and the common cold. Viruses can be lethal or harmless, but this particular mutation of this virus may be harmful. Why not take precautions when bugspray is easy enough to apply?
i went to my ob this past week. new ob. apparently recommendations change constantly. since i was in jamaica in early march i get to have bonus screening ultrasounds this pregnancy, starting now
What are people's thoughts on traveling somewhere like Hawaii, where the mosquitos that can carry the virus are present but there are currently no local cases? Husband and I booked a trip before learning I was pregnant and now we are trying to decide if we should cancel. The trip is in two months so we have to decide soon.
@MrsBrimstone I went to Florida in January/February this year while TTC and we just made sure we had repellent and wore long sleeves and pants at night. I didn't get any bites but the house we rented had a screened pool and we left beaches right when the bugs started coming out before sunset. I don't remember seeing any flying insects at amusement parks (I did see a spider in a parking garage though --eek!)
One thing I hadn't considered is that people traveling to these places that do in fact have Zika are coming back home and the local mosquitos are contracting the virus that way (I guess this is how Florida has Zika now). I guess these mosquitos have a very tiny area they live in so that brings my worry down quite a bit. But, as some have said earlier, all the people going to the Olympics can potentially bring back the virus to their area's mosquitos... I'm curious to see how this shakes out.
If you are staying at a resort, I'd maybe call them and see what measures they are taking for mosquito control. If they have well established measures, the probability of Zika being a problem for you goes significantly down.
@wholesome yeah, as a Floridian there are measures you can take to reduce your chances of mosquito bites, like you did with not going out late, bugspray, etc. Also I've been thinking along the same lines as you, that the reason we have zika locally now is because a mosquito bit a travel infected person and is now transmitting it locally to other people via bites. Most mosquitos never fly further than a few miles of where they're born, or so I've read.
To me this basically means that any state with travel infected cases and the right kind of mosquito has the possibility of a local transmission happening.

Bringing this thread back. Anyone on this page live in FL or have trips or babymoons planned to FL? I have a trip to FL planned for mid-October. Our lodging on the beach is completely free and flights are booked with points, so it is the perfect, low-cost babymoon. Except for of course Zika. This is more mid-Florida near Sarasota (I know there is one local case in the Tampa area). Everyone is freaking out at me that I should cancel, but I want to play it by ear since everything is refundable and I realllly don't want to cancel. What are other ladies doing? What are those of you who are pregnant and living in FL doing?

I am not going to Florida and live in PA, but for what it's worth, when I asked my OB about Zika recommendations 2 weeks ago, he said that as of that morning (he checks up on the situation daily), the infection site was limited to a 1 block radius in Miami. All the cases originating in the US so far, as of my conversation with him 2 weeks ago, could be traced to that single block in Miami. Now, that could've changed between now and then and it could change before your trip, but based on what he told me, if you're going to central FL and not Miami, you should be fine. However, absolutely talk your doctor about this and keep updated on the situation. I would also wear bug spray just in case. Have fun- I so wish that my DH and I could go on a babymoon!
@newyearsbaby5 I'm with you on this one, we have a trip planned to Orlando for the week of Thanksgiving and I'm torn on what to do myself! Are mosquitoes present in Florida at that time? Looking forward to seeing what others have to say!
I'm in FL and near the Tampa Bay Area where the most recent case has surfaced. I've been wearing bug spray, and making sure we dump any standing water each morning. I haven't had an appointment since the most recent case surfaced, but prior to that my dr told me to just use caution, as there's no real way to avoid mosquitos here unless you never go outside.
While our Fall weather isn't too different from summer, temperatures typically do come down a bit and you see a small reduction in mosquitos as this happens.
I would wait as it gets closer to the date and see what the recommendations are then. A lot can change from now until October. Hopefully you can still make the trip though!
Hi there! I live in Tampa, and I work in Pinellas County, where the person that has Zika lives. I want to say that me personally, I am not taking this news lightly, and it is scary. I have an OB appointment this Friday and I wonder if my doctor will mention anything, but at this moment, I have not received a call or an automated message from the doctor's office. There is not much I can do, because I can't move from FL or stay inside 100%, however, I take many precautions and I am very vigilant. If I know I will be outside longer than walking from my car to office/walking to the mailbox/etc, I spray myself with 25% Deet (target brand) or use Deet wipes (repel brand). Just last week I was outside for a concert, and I doused myself with the spray and not one bug touched me. If we go out to dinner, I say inside seating, etc. I would hate for you all to cancel your Sarasota plans (seriously, my favorite beaches. Go get some custard at SweetBerries---life changing yumminess) because of the Zika, however, I understand your fears. I also want to add that the local paper today said the man who contracted Zika was a firefighter that lives in Pinellas but works in Tampa, and the fire dept released a statement that they tested the whole firehouse & none of his co-workers had it, also that the man doesn't have the virus anymore. Hopefully this makes your decision a little easier! I am here to chat if you need any more advice. DEET works wonders!!!

We had BREAKING NEWS interrupt something I was watching about a week ago about a local pregnant woman testing positive for Zika. They went on to say CDC officials were trying to determine how she got it since we don't have mosquitoes that carry it here. Oh and btw she just got back from Mexico. I'm not an expert of anything but... Pretty sure we know how she got it. Ugh fear mongering. Don't get me wrong. I'm afraid of Zika but don't send everyone into a frenzy just yet guys. @newyearsbaby5 I'd wait it out since it's all refundable. If your OB clears it I wouldn't give it a second thought and just be careful to avoid getting bitten while there.
Thanks, ladies! I'm totally fine with dousing myself with bug spray and I know a mosquito can't fly from Miami to Sarasota. It's more the comments and fear that others have (like the BREAKING NEWS) and all that stuff that makes me think I'd be doing something wrong. Ladies in Tampa area (@nolemama24 and @nolemomma14 ) I feel for you in this scary time! Thanks so much for your feedback. I'll definitely be following up with you two (and it seems anyone with "nole" in their username ) prior to my trip about the real feel/mosquito situation, not just the scary news. And I've never tried SweetBerries so now I have to go! Especially since I'll be indulging for two.
@newyearsbaby5 we had a trip to Sarasota planned for last week and we wound up canceling. I personally would not have been able to relax and enjoy myself. I'd talk to your doctor and keep abreast of the news and make a decision as the trip gets closer.
I'm with @nolemama24in that I don't take the news/updates lightly. I think for those of us living in states along the Gulf Coast, the threat is much more real and imminent. I don't think there's a lot of fear mongering here; I think the warnings are legitimate especially given the fact that the CDC admittedly doesn't know much about this virus. If I had the actual choice, I wouldn't travel to a state on the Gulf Coast this summer, but I don't have that choice! So it is what it is, and we can only take the precautions that we can.

I thought the Miami cases were contracted here, at least the 'one block radius' few?
@Renee1105 I agree, I wouldn't take the chance for a vacation. I have to do extra screening already for zika because we were in jamaica before I even got pregnant by almost two months (because the recommendations changed over and over). its not fun and is super stressful. I'm totally avoiding the high risk places.
And while the Aedes aegypti is the most common mosquito carrying it right now and only in the south, the Aedes albopictus can also carry it and it has a much wider range in the US (and Europe). So its possible for it to locally transmit in other areas, unfortunately.
@newyearsbaby5 Another Floridian over here, I am not 100% sure how Sarasota is, but it is normally pretty dry in Florida in October (Barring a hurricane). I only have experience in NE and Central Florida, but the rainy summer days are almost always gone by then so the threat of mosquitoes is much lower. I would still be aware and wear lots of bug spray, and play it by ear, but honestly it sounds like a great trip!
@BriannaE129129 I don't know if anyone answered you, but I will tell you that I frequented Disney World many times in Oct/Nov (Food and Wine Festival, YUM!) and never got bitten or even thought about mosquitoes. Not sure what area of Central Florida you will be in, but once again, it is normally pretty nice and dry by November.
@AmRe214 thanks! I'll be staying in Orlando and going to Disney so that makes it a little less dangerous I guess? I'm going to talk to my OB at my appt in a few weeks but I'm just waiting it out right now. If i don't go I'm hoping we can get our money back!
@briannae129129 I went to Disney in late June when the press started saying Zika's arrival was immenant. My midwife just told me to wear deet and be cautious. It was disgustingly hot but I wasn't bitten at all. The most reassuring bit is that my husband, who is LITERALLY a mosquito magnet and is bitten whenever they're present didn't have one bite the whole time. I'm not a doctor or a zika expert but Disney seems to do a pretty good job of keeping mosquitos away! Obviously see what your doctor (and the CDC) says but that was my experience.
@hayhay87 thanks! Any advice people have that have been lately/live there I great appreciate. Such a hard decision and I want to make sure I make the right one!

I wish people wouldn't post garbage without sources so we can see what garbage it is clearly
ETA I just can't
