Any over-anxious FTMs out there?

This is my first pregnancy and I have no idea what to expect, what I'm looking for, etc and it's making me a nervous wreck! My OB appt isn't until next week (I'm at 6+1) and I keep freaking myself out consulting dr Google. I'm gong insane waiting to hear that heart at and find out if everything is ok! Anybody else in the same boat? Anybody have tips for staying calm until I see the OB?

Re: Any over-anxious FTMs out there?

  • Hey, Im a FTM and also feeling really anxious. Im currently 8+3 and I have my first booking in appointment with the midwife this wednesday. I will get to hear the heartbeat with the doppler but no ultrasound. I just feel anxious and worried that something will go wrong so I am thinking about booking an early (private) scan for this week following my appointment. I dont even know why I am so worried as there is no reason to be I suppose. Trying not to stress about it but cant even concentrate at work- focusing on nothing but my appointment atm x

  • You are not alone.  I am a second time mom and am still freaking out a little lol....I have no reason to worry but it is totally normal.  People do it with their third and fourth pregnancies.  It is just part of being a mom and the worrying never stops!  I am 9 weeks 4 days and I worry a bit less now but I think everyone is a little anxious no matter what.  Just hang in there and after a few weeks pass you will feel better! :)
  • Hey ladies! This is my first pregnancy too and I'm finding it hard to believe that I'm actually pregnant. I'm taking weekly pregnancy tests even though I've already had blood drawn twice to confirm. My first ultrasound is exactly 2 weeks away and the wait is driving me insane. I just want to hear the heartbeat. I think that will make it feel more real.

I think we are all worried about the unknown. The first time for anything is scary!

  • I'm pretty anxious about it all, too...but having people to talk to and go through the process with will definitely help.  One of my good friends here at home is about 2 weeks ahead of me so we'll be able to actually experience everything together :)

  • I have dealt with anxiety for many years prior to becoming pregnant, but I've actually found myself being at peace (for the most part) during this pregnancy so far. Small parts of me are anxious to see the baby in there just to have reassurance. The thing that's been happening to me is not being able to fall asleep at night and wondering how on earth I'm going to be a good parent, and what makes me think I can do this lol. Even though we were trying and totally wanted to get pregnant, I just have this anxiety and doubt about being a good parent, but I assume that's normal. It helps me to tell myself "at this moment, everything is going well to the best of my knowledge, and I have not had any experience otherwise". Positive self talk really helps calm my anxiety.
  • @Schumerator I know exactly what you mean. I'm more nervous about what's to come once baby arrives than what's going on right now (although I still get nervous about that too sometimes). I'm grateful and excited about having a baby but I also feel like I can't fully wrap my head around it, if that makes any sense.

  • I feel the same way -- and because I got pregnant while under the care of an RE and am now seeing an MFM, I have had 4 ultrasounds already at 8 weeks.  Seeing the heartbeat and that everything's okay makes me feel better for about an hour and then I'm back to being an anxious nervous wreck.  I have told my husband that I will "finally relax" after the NEXT appointment...after every appointment.

all I can do to try to relax is to remind myself, like others have said, that as far as I know, everything is okay, that odds are that everything will remain okay, and that if something isn't okay, there's nothing that worrying -- or anything else -- can do about it.  But repeating it to yourself and actually accepting it are two very different things!
  • I'm right there as well. I have no symptoms besides small twinges and maybe a little bit tired, so I'm always thinking something is wrong. I have my 1st u/s tomorrow and it can't come soon enough. Best of luck! :)

  • I'm with @shilarys
im a second time mom, and I'm still freaking out. Hubby and I were given a less than 1% chance of natural conception. Then we had our daughter naturally (she's 1.5) and now this one! I took 3 pregnancy tests because I wanted to "make sure".
I'm so desperately trying not to panic about a miscarriage 24/7, but it's so hard!
  • I am a nervous wreck, too! I'm a little over 7 weeks along but my first appointment isn't until September when I'll be closer to 13 weeks! I hate having to wait so long to confirm if everything is okay.

I am also worried about what to expect being pregnant...as well as labor and delivery, and what to do with my baby once he or she arrives lol. I have no siblings, have never babysat before, and am freaking out about being someone's mommy. Don't get me wrong I am very excited, just really scared and overwhelmed. My best friend had a baby 2 months ago and I hope I will feel a little better once I tell her. She was terrified too, and now she's loving every minute of it.

I'm glad we have this forum! I think it will help us all to  know we're not alone.
  • I'm not a first time mom but I am PGAL so I'm still extremely anxious. Just impatiently waiting until February (when I'll actually probably give birth)
  • Yes, yes, yes. I've taken 4 pregnancy tests, check my toilet paper for blood every time I pee, Google the world's worst possible scenarios and anxiously worry when my symptoms disappear.

I also have zero cause for worry, it's just the lack of knowing that gets to me.

    We are in this together!

I can't say I've found the cure, but it does help to just understand that I will be ok and life will go on no matter what happens.
  • STM, and I'm probably more anxious this time than I was with my first. It's been almost 5 years since I was pregnant, so it's like it's happening for the first time.

  • Super anxious over here!

I've been having a lot of period like cramping. Some of it is pretty intense (wakes me up or makes me stop what I'm doing). It doesn't last for more than a few minutes and I'm not spotting, so I'm not calling the OB about it (yet). Everything I've read says this is normal, but it's just disconcerting.

Same. I remember it being exactly the same with my first. Lots of cramping on and off for the first few weeks. but for some reason it doesn't make me feel much more at ease. Stupid hormonal freak outs.... :(
  • Yes! I am an anxious person anyway, and now that I'm PGAL it's intensified. But I want this baby to have its best chances, so I'm trying to be zen and not Google things and just understand that most of this is out of my control. If I eat well, don't push myself, and keep up the prenatal appointment schedule... what will be will be.

  • Definitely anxious, although I've gotten better about it in the last week or so. My symptoms are pretty low key (bit of cramping and back pain mostly) so I don't really feel pregnant, which makes me more anxious than anything else about it.

  • I'm not too anxious overall, but would love to have a daily ultrasound just to make sure how the kid is doing! I have been having moments looking around at the house where I start to freak out because I'm going to have to clean so much more before this baby starts crawling around. Otherwise, just Googling every symptom and coming on here.

  • Super nervous. Two MCs at 5 & 6 weeks, and now I'm 8 1/2 and even though ecstatic I've made it here, gnawing feelings all the time that something is wrong. I have my 2nd ultrasound tomorrow morning. The morning sickness is a good sign though, so every time I puke, I know that little womb goblin is making me do it.

  • I'm definitely feeling anxious too! I'm 8 weeks today and have my first appt on Wednesday. I nearly cried hearing this morning that I wasn't going to get an ultrasound. I have to schedule it with a damn perinatal testing center, so I'm praying that they aren't scheduling too far out. It's been nearly a month since my BFP and I've had no confirmation of anything so far, so I'm catastrophizing like a MFer. I'm so excited, but between the poor sleep, body aches, and nausea, it's hard to remain positive (even though I get that symptomatic = good). The only thing that's making this feel remotely real is the little swollen "speed bump" I've developed above my public bone in the last week or so.

Glad I'm not the only neurotic one!
