Re: July Randoms Thread

  • @diagonalley My Love It was for the image of a doggie-given back massage.  Not for your poor, scared, pup!

Our dog is a HUGE lover - another of those who never stops reminding you to pet him, scratch him, snuggle with him, etc.  He doesn't get as much attention as he did before DD was born but we still give him quite a bit (though he acts like he's been deprived of any human contact whenever we do pet him because if it's not constant, it's not enough, lol!)  DD likes him but they're not the buddies I'd hoped they'd be.  He tolerates her but he's an old man dog.  He just wants to rest and be gently pet and snuggled with.  She has way too much energy and doesn't quite understand how to approach him, though we're working on it.  He's the best dog, though - when she's being wild around him and he clearly doesn't like it, he just looks at us with pleading eyes for help and/or gets up and walks away.

@marajay6 - I like to look up the ASQ questionnaires for different ages as we approach them. A lot of the questions are things that I wouldn't really know if he could do, unless we tried it before going to his well-checks (where they typically verbally ask us the questions, or have us fill out the form).
Also, @PSUBecky23 is exactly right.  By 24 months, the questions shift more towards, "can your child carry out x number of directions verbally" and examples would be "get your coat" "Place the toy in the bucket" etc.  Emmett has a lot of really easily understood words but also a lot that like others have said, he will repeat over and over and look irritated with me but I just can't for the life of me understand them.  At the same time, he could easily follow any of those directions and seems to be comprehending a whole lot that we're saying to him/asking him to do.  It's a fun age!

  • I'm not enjoying the baby book that I purchased for LO. At first it was fun filling it out but now I don't like the design. I also don't like my child's baby books to be telling me to do things like "Be sure to cook and freeze at least two weeks of meals in advance before the baby's birth."

WHY? Because I'm the only one in my house that can cook and it's my job to make sure everyone and the guests are fed even AFTER giving birth?

Ok. I know that's not what it really meant, I need to eat too duh, but DH actually is a better cook than I am so he can do it. Why does it have to be me?!

And screw your "Mommy needs List" with its ridiculous suggestions such as a MATERNITY COCKTAIL DRESS.

Despite some of its totally legitimate suggestions, I get the overall feeling that June Cleaver co-authored this thing.
Lol my H is so clueless in the kitchen and I don't want takeout every day so I'm cooking and freezing
  • @MrsVoorhees - hahahaha, oh I'm sure there's a whole different questionnaire out there to determine sass level!  But that certainly counts in my book!

  • @MrsVoorhees - my 20 month old says no all the time. He isn't particularly sassy in the way he says it, but it can be frustrating when he always says no. We also have a hard time understanding him. Last night I couldn't tell if he was asking for kiwi or a cookie. But he has a good memory. Last week I put some bubbles out of reach in a cabinet. Several days later, DS was pointing at the cabinet saying "bubbles". My husband had no idea that I had put the bubbles there and thought DS was just talking jibberish.

  • @marajay6 hers is the funniest tone. Really sassy and forward. It's like, "hmm I thought about and mmmno."
  • I'm kind of relieved to hear there is so much variation in speech levels for the under 2 crowd. My daughter is by no means a prodigy of any sort (I just had to stop her from eating dog food for the millionth time) but her pediatricians have always commented on how above average her speech is for her age. My husband and I were the first of all of our siblings to have children and now that they have started having children I get my SIL's asking questions like "When did DD1 start talking?", "How many words did she have at this age?", "When did she start using sentences?" and etc. So I get super uncomfortable when like my SIL is all excited her kid finally has 3 words and wants to know how many words my daughter had at that age and I had already lost count by that time because she had so many. We were also the first of our friends who had children so I've never before had any other children that were being compared to her before.

I think when you guys get to the readiness assessment the kids have to do for school you will be pretty surprised at how low the expectation is. I know I was floored by it. That said my daughter didn't talk very well or clear and then it was almost like overnight difference and wouldn't stop. Now at 4.5 years old there are days I want to lock myself in my room for a sanity break!
  • To add to the speech conversation, my oldest only had two words by age 2 and started speech lessons shortly after that. It took probably a good year before he would say words and really not till around 4-4 1/2 could everyone understand him. He's still in speech at age 7 but it's never held him back in school and you wouldn't think he has or ever had a problem if you met him now.

My random of the day - had an ultrasound to check up only little one. She's measuring right on track and is head down. They are running more lab work on me though cause they're still concerned about my weight gain. Thinking now maybe it's my thyroid that's causing issues. It was a relief to know that the baby's doing good though and my oldest son really enjoyed getting to see his little sister again.
  • I have been so bad about commenting on here, it's all I can do to keep up on reading everything!  Of course now I can barely remember anything I want to say.
@Bibliobebe at around 14 weeks I made a tiny paper garland to put up at work, and am just now realizing how flipping close to the end we are all as I can barely hang it up it's so short!

DD only had a few words until she was 2, we set her up for a review and about a week beforehand she just decided she was going to start talking all the time.  She still has pronunciation problems, but won't shut up for anything.
She's also been extra clingy lately, I can't drop her off at daycare without going through a ten minute process of her screaming/crying and clinging to me/wanting to be held.  So much fun :s

    Don't leave us hanging!

ETA: Just saw your next post. Glad it's just for work. Sorry you have to do it.

Sorry I should clarify that it's to see clients for work!

ETA: I forget that normal people don't go to jail a handful of times a month for work
Ha! I would tell people I grew up at detox. Forgetting to add that my Mom was an alcohol and drug abuse rehabilitation nurse. That was way b4 take your kids to work day. I would hang out in her office after school some days. Learned first hand drugs are bad and they were always tragically underfunded.
  • @diagonalley my big scary pit bull is terrified of storms and also shakes like a leaf the whole time there is any thunder. Fortunately he also likes to hide his face behind me so I think I can work out a back massage. Great idea.

My husband is a CO so he goes everyday. He always says he's glad he's on the right side of the bars.

I interned for the PD's office in law school so I went frequently as well. I learned quickly not to wear a skirt on those days.

Just gave my pathetic pittie an anxiety pill because we're getting crazy storms and he's shaking.

  • I was on my registry to add something, and only 4 things have been purchased for my shower in 2 weeks...I know that's plenty of time, and I am not worried about whether or not people bring gifts, but there are a couple really important things on there that I want to make sure I have when LO arrives - like the carseat or the baby monitor.  Mostly, I'm just nervous we'll end up with a million newborn-sized outfits and blankets and none of the things we actually want or need...

  • Add my dog to the list of the terrified. We won't get her out from behind the couch until 11pm, long after the storms are over.
  • Good luck to everyone dealing with storms!

I'm over here feeling like a newborn who has their days/nights mixed up. 0 sleep at night and dozing away all afternoon. At least I'm on summer break?

My 2yo suffers from hard to understand pronunciation also. Luckily, her brother often understands her and tells me what she said. She legit went from barely talking to "I don't like the thunder, mommy, it's too LOUD" in the 4 months from her birthday. Caterpillars and thunder are in her bad books.

Unfortunately I don't have slacks that fit. So I went with a black maxi dress for optimal coverage

Had a crap day at work today. We had no internet access for four hours this morning and I had an appointment to leave for. One thing I did today took the entire day to do so I got nothing accomplished.

Tonight im at a breastfeeding class at my hospital - I was late because of the weather (first time it's rained in about 10 weeks) and then horrible traffic. I hate being late!! I even gave myself an extra 15 minutes, but the combo of the elements and traffic screwed me. Then the elevators wouldn't take me down to the floor I wanted. Damn! One of those days I suppose...

at least this course has been informative. Another hour and a half to go. ;)

eta @jabreen I have the same fear. We need everything for LO and have bought nothing. My shower is August 6 so I'm concerned we will be buying everything last second...and I have so many of my baby clothes from when I was a baby, plus everything people are giving us. I won't need to buy clothing. Ever.
  • Tomorrow is my last birth class and they kinda mentioned that everyone usually brings in food the last day.
I was going to bake something but is that weird? Should I bring in something store bought.

@Megan324 I would probably do a dip with some crackers or something. But bake away if you feel like it!

I used to be a CO in a level 4 male prison. Couldn't do it after having kids and wouldn't want to go pregnant either!
  • So I'd like to think I'm a pretty chill gal. I don't get upset at much and believe I have [enough] patience. But this vacation hasn't been what I was expecting. It could be the excessive hormones, it could be the fact that I'm 8 months pregnant and just can't move around as much as I'm required to.

My girls haven't slept through the night since I've been here. I'm totally exhausted. Every time I try to suck it up and get up and start moving I'm in so much pain, mostly in my pelvic area.

but when we first got to the beach house, which is a rental, we found out the only shower they had at the house was an outside shower. Just a tiny two foot tub inside. Okay, no big deal the girls can get a bath and adults shower outside. I go outside and the shower is probably worse then a prison shower. I say, whatever and shrug it off bc I will only use it once a day to get the sand and such off from the beach. I go in today and there is black mold in there. Like it grew a shit ton over night or something?! Now I'm no expert but isn't that, ummm, not safe? it's all over the drain, floors and up the wall. My mom doesn't think it's a big deal but I am kind of freaking out. It's disgusting and I think my mom needs to say something immediately to the owner.

If you read this far, sorry so long, am I overreacting? Is it even safe for me or others to shower in there? I mean black mold is toxic, no?

  • @seitzy3 - I don't think you're overreacting. We found what we swore was black mold under some molding in our kitchen and I about lost it. The landlord didn't take it seriously at first. Come to find out, he knew the mold was there but decided to just cover it with the baseboards. We still don't know if it was black mold but we haven't had problems since. They came out and treated it thank goodness.

I agree your mom should say something to the owner asap. Better same than sorry.

@Megan324 I'd say bake away! Generally you get a feel for people in those classes so you're not total strangers. Make brownies. With chocolate chunks. And fudge.
