Re: Moms who go Bump in the night/Randoms

  • We haven't left LO with anyone yet; he'll be 6 weeks on Saturday. I think he would be fine, and I'm sure his grandma would jump at the chance to babysit for a couple of hours, but I don't think I could handle it yet. I'm going to have to work up to the idea of going out for a few hours so that j can actually enjoy myself when we do!

@vintagevix86 Waking up every 1.5-2 hours sounds rough! I hope your guy keeps up with the longer stretches of sleep and that you're able to start adjusting your schedule with him.

  • Ugh. Lucky with a calm baby. Mine eats every 1 1/2 to 2 hours right now and refuses the bottle. Her crying is heartbreaking. I wouldn't do that to any of our family. We will have to wait until she is bigger and more secure in her surroundings. My girl is definitely living up to the 4th trimester issues!

Well that makes complete sense.  Lucky for us, with the exception of figuring out how to keep him asleep longer than 30min, he's getting a lot better with fussing and will eat every 2-3 hours.  I'm thinking if we want a night out, my MIL is really good with directions and won't stray from his feeding and sleeping schedule so I trust her more than my own mom.

Oh I feel for you!!  I was so worried about the bottle thing that when they wanted us to start supplementing in the hospital I made my husband do all of the bottles. My mom suggested having him do it and me staying far away so that he didn't really have another option. Even now if I do give a bottle LO wants to eat off of my breast.  On the other hand I am kind of glad we did do the bottle so soon because it made going back to work at 6 weeks a lot easier.

Last week my little sister, who is a full time nanny, watched my LO with my mom too for about 4 hours while we celebrated our 1st anniversary with dinner out just a month and a half late...lol.  They were blessed with a blow out and peed on at the same time!!  I guess he peed on the new outfit they were going to change him into too.

Well I always say you do you and good luck with the feedings!  Sounds like you will have a very happy and healthy little one
  • @egirl1025 my husband tries the bottle and she has taken one or two from him but has usually been refusing. She also refuses the pacifier, no matter how hard we try to get her to take it!! There is a chance she will refuse the bottle when i go back to work next week and spend the whole evening just waiting for me to come back home (I will be gone between 1-4 hours). The LC said this is common and she won't starve but could be REALLY angry at him.

We are taking it all in stride. We worked so hard to get her and lost our first one to a MMC, so we are both typically able to stay calm and not get too flustered by her moodiness. We just feel so blessed to have her and love spending time loving on her and being a family together!
  • Anyone else have a baby with some NASTY breath? She fell asleep open mouthed on my chest and MAN it smells!

Haha no but you made me laugh! Are you feeding her formula?

Yea! It smells like sour milk. I bf and someone told me it could be a symptom of reflux.

Aw. I love the way my little one's breath smells. He is formula fed.
  • Let's hear it for baby wipe showers!

I didn't plan my evening well (1st time flying solo with our son in the evening) so unless I want to stay up any later to shower now that he is in bed, baby wipes are where it's at.

No, breast milk. Makes me really want to never forget a bottle on the counter.

  • Well, it's almost midnight and Ethan has been fussy for almost 2 hours. Ugh. He ate, burped and had his diaper changed and he just won't relax and go to sleep.  Meanwhile, my husband is at the Blink 182 concert (which he bought tickets to months ago) and isn't here to help me so I'm a little annoyed....

Of course that's how it always works out!! Men have all the luck. I never do this but the other morning it was like 5:30am I had been up a million times and she was wide awake. I put her down in her bed and told DH she's all yours I'm going to bed. He came back like 1 min later saying she was asleep I was kinda disappointed lol. Hope you got some sleep.

  • I don't want to jinx myself but the past couple of nights, our son is sleeping at 3-4 hr intervals during the night. Hooray! One night was completely grunt-free too! I thought it was due to using the Biogaia probiotic for the first time that night, but he grunted a lot last night (until he moved to the nursery and was quiet as a mouse there).
  • Soo does anyone have any ideas on how to clean their boppy besides just taking the cover off? Our LO just switched from size newborn diapers, which are too small, now to size 1, but the size one are a little big around the legs even when we put it on as tightly as possible. (without hurting her obviously) Since the switch she has leaked pee while nursing 3 times! TIA!

I just put mine in the washing machine.

I was actually thinking it would be nice to have a plastic cover under the regular boppy cover. My little lady drips milk a lot and has had diaper leaks, all which goes straight through the cover to the boppy. So our boppy has gotten washed a lot. But a plastic cover would mean I would just have to swap out the over cover and protect the actual boppy from fluids.

I have been looking for plastic covers too. Anyone find any for a decent price? I had no idea you could wash boppy in the washing machine! Thanks!
  • I have that water-resistant boppy cover and I love it. My daughter has spit up and had explosive diapers on it and all I have to do is take off the decorative cover and wash that. The waterproof one underneath hasn't absorbed anything. I just have two decorative covers that I can rotate between as needed. Mine was a gift from BRU for my shower.
  • How many of you guys have established nap time already? LO naps on my chest while I nap or in my arms while I hold her and watch TV. She's just 1 month and is going to daycare at 5 months.

Have I "ruined" her by not having her take naps on her own? She is really not a fan of it so I don't push it and just hold her. (I not-so-secretly love the cuddles!) She sleeps on her own in a bassinet at night for 3-6 hour stretches, so nighttime isn't really any issue.

Any thoughts from you wise mamas?

We have semi-established naps but I don't etch them in stone since I feel like he is still at an age when he will nap when he wants to so I follow his lead unless he simply won't take one at all...then I do what I can to put him down.

He usually has a morning one from 9-10ish (we cuddle for that one) and then he has two in the afternoon (depending on how his meltdown has gone). Each one is about 2hrs long, maybe even 3. Those are usually in the rock n play since I have a hard time getting him to nap in the afternoons anywhere else. He has napped in my arms a couple of times for those long naps tho. I don't see a problem with you doing it since your LO sleeps fine at night in her own. I can't be sure if it would cause problems once she is at daycare. I feel like you have time to transition her to napping on her own tho. I could be wrong since I'm just a FTM.
  • @laurenm2123 we are similar to you, still figuring it out. I'd like to see the responses from the others as well.
  • I've been putting LO down for naps as she gets sleepy just because most of the time it helps her fall asleep. I change her diaper, swaddle her, give her a pacifier, walk around the room until her eyes shut and then lay her down shortly after. Sometimes I have to rinse and repeat for it to be effective and sometimes it's just not happening. The bedtime routine is similar, with the addition of bath time, lotion, pj's, and a feeding. I think the routine is as much for me as her so I can get some stuff done or take a solid nap myself. The last day or two she hasn't been having it though and napping for 10-30 minutes at a time. It's killing me!

I was obcesseing about where DS napped until I threw my hands up and said "you can't spoil a newborn".  Sometimes he naps on me and sometimes in the crib.  I'd imagine the daycare people are used to this and may even help to teach her to nap on her own over time cause she has to sleep and they obviously can't hold her the whole time.  So no, you haven't ruined her and i say get your cuddles while you can!
  • DS is 6 weeks and I haven't worried about a nap schedule yet. Between growth spurts and developmental leaps, he changes so quickly that I feel like he needs something different every day. I try to follow his lead, with the exception that I will actively try to get him to sleep if he has been up more than a couple hours or is acting tired. But the time he wakes up in the morning and the length of his naps vary so much that we are never on the same schedule for more than a day or two.
  • No schedule here but she generally follows a very loose schedule on her own. And for at least one nap a day she sleeps on my chest. It's our snuggle time and I don't plan on giving it up for awhile. She can nap on her own and sleeps on her own now at night so it doesn't bother me at all to have that one time every day that we spend snuggled up together.
  • I'm trying to start a kind of routine, but with the older two it's hard. Usually she gets a morning nap in her crib, and one after lunch if I'm luck and home. The last one of the day is usually hit or miss, often in the bouncy seat or on my husband if he's home from work. She cat naps in the car, stroller or carrier if we're out.

She is only a month old

  • Yes I love the cuddles so much! And since she's my first right now it's just us during the day, I won't have this luxury with a second or third!

  • So here's a random.  We are on our first big road trip.  LO is just over 3 weeks old and we are currently on our way on a 6-7 hour (one way), week long trip.  So, first stop we make for hungry baby ends with poo diaper blowout when he's still working on bottle.  I'm of course holding him in front seat of truck (parked of course).  Thankfully it wasn't a big blowout, more of a leak I guess.  Shorts and shirt took a small hit, no biggie.  Fun part is when I as changing him on front seat,he decides to play fireman.  Managed to get diaper over the hose but then it's running down all over changing pad, and him, and some on truck seat.  Ugh. Finally got all squared away enough to get back on rd. Only 4 more hours.  Now I get to pump...   at least I'm not driving.

This is partly why we bought an RV for our drive across country from CA to VA in September. That and not having to move baby stuff in and out of hotel rooms every night.

We embark on our Texas road trip on Friday. Haha. Good luck the rest of your trip and hopefully no more blow outs!

My parents went to Iowa when I was 1, my parents stopped at a gas station and my mom changed my diaper while my dad filled the car. My mom went to throw the diaper in the dumpster and when she did a homeless man jumped out and scared her to death. Lol!!!
  • @Tawny87 that's hilarious.   Yea, DH wasn't much help besides laughing.  I wasn't exactly angry just like "stop laughing I need another wipe!"
  • Positive- she's napping and not on me... Negative- tummy time did not go well! :D

And yes, she is 100% supervised or else there wouldn't be a lose blanket on her!

Nice!! I can't wait for that one day but I'm feeling pretty great when LO does a 5 hr stretch doesn't happen everynight but it did tonight. Her brother wasn't capable of going more than 3hrs till like 6 months old.

  • So jealous of these babies sleeping longer stretches. S had a couple of nights where he was pushing it to 5 or 6 hours, but he's now back to wanting to eat every 3 hours. I'm hoping this is part of the wonder week leap and that after we get through it he'll be sleeping longer again.
  • I get one almost 4 hour stretch most nights but unfortunately it is the first stretch of the night and I'm not able to fall asleep right away. So if she falls asleep around 10 she is out til around 2 but I can't fall asleep until 11/1130. Then she is back to every 1 1/2-2 hours. One night she had two 3 hour back to back stretches And it felt miraculous!

Last night for some reason she started her long sleep at 8:30pm. Slept til midnight. I knew she was going to wake up at any point so I couldn't fall asleep. It was a rough night thereafter.
  • @June2016BabyW ugh that is the worst! My baby is the same except two nights ago he fell asleep from 10 p.m to four for the first time ever and I stayed awake till 130 thinking he was going to wake up any min.  Then he was awake every 21/2 to three hours for the rest of the morning and afternoon.
