What are you doing to mentally be prepared to go past your EDD?

So for my past two babies, I was induced at 39 weeks and knew that was where I was heading.  Thankfully, this one is doing better size wise and OB is saying we should be safe to assume I will go to (or past) my EDD.  I am looking for things to occupy my mind (at home and at work) to be mentally prepared for going that long.

So far it has helped to make a family calendar with everything we have going on.  We still have a few things planned in the next few weeks (attending a birthday party, hosting a baby shower, family dinners for my kids birthdays).  So I'm trying to stay focused on those.  But I still have a very large growing list of baby to-dos at home I need to find time (and motivation) for.

Anyone else?

  • If both of us our healthy, they'll let me go until 42 weeks before inducing so in my mind my really-really-last-day is August 17. I'm trying to frame my mental countdown as, "okay, now it will be no more than 1 month" vs. focusing on my actual August 3 due date. I'm actually enjoying my weekly appointments to check on her so I look forward to those, keeping busy at work, walking the dog, cooking and resting.
  • DD was induced past 41wks, so I'm also assuming I'll go past due again.  But I'm grateful for the extra time to prepare and make plans for DD when labor strikes.  If we get to the due date, and all signs are favorable for a smooth induction, I'm thinking I'd like to schedule one since my first went so well, and it will make things much easier to plan for DD.  Otherwise I'm similarly focusing on fun things we can do together in the last couple weeks as a family of three.  Oh and what crazy woman starts a new job 5 days before her due date?  this one!  So fingers are really crossed that I at least get to the due date feeling well enough to have a few days in the new job.

  • Being an end of the month due date makes me pretty anxious already, but talking up the extra time to prepare and the extra time with just DD will hopefully be helpful. With DD I went to 39 + 5. Although I sort of feel like this guy may come early, I know I need to be prepared for at least 2 weeks past his due date, which would put me into September.

  • @PeachGal23 - Good luck at your new job!  I am trying to stay focused that every day longer I stay at work (and not take PTO) is one more day of maternity leave.  Plus, if I go to my due date, that means I can stay out until Thanksgiving which is a nice quiet time to return.  If I have the baby early, that means an earlier return date.

Yes!  I agree with mentally putting my count down at absolute worst case is better for my mind.  I'm stopping work Aug 15th (due the 16th) so I'm trying to look forward to that date.  So I'm less than 1 month now which is exciting.

  • I've been trying to keep making plans for up to my due date. We had a nice date night this past weekend, I've made a grooming appointment for my dog; just things to keep me getting out of the house. And I keep reminding my parents that my due date is not a magical date, which helps me remember that as well.
  • I honestly am thinking about planning ahead with my Dr, to schedule an induction for the day after my due date, assuming he doesn't come before. My first came 1 day late on his own, and my second was induced 1 day early due to gestational diabetes. I have GD again with this one, but they aren't looking for him to be very big, so I don't want to even consider induction before my due date.
  • I just asked my doctor at my last appt. what is the longest they would let me go for and she said 41 weeks. So that puts me at the latest having this baby Sept. 3 or 4. I've always had it in my mind she would come later than her due date. Maybe it's because my pregnancy has been very uneventful. I'm almost 35 weeks and I don't think I've even felt BH.

Plus my mom and MIL are coming to live with us for 5 weeks starting a week before my due date. So the longer baby waits, the more time we have with them to show them our city (even though I'll probably feel miserable) and the less time they are here with baby. I'm sure you guys will hear me talk about this more in the future.
  • I am not prepared at all. I want baby to come NOW! But my doctor won't let me go more than a week past my due date, so baby can't be too late. I'm sitting on a yoga ball today in hopes it will help baby drop down and think about getting ready. I really need to go back to work 2 days a week starting Aug 22, so I can't even fathom baby coming late.

  • As long as all is well at my appointments, I can go up to 2 weeks past my EDD. So yesterday, I told myself it could be up to 5 weeks. That still seems like it will come really fast to me, so I'm fine with it. I'm just staying focused on enjoying having a quiet house while I can and enjoying it being just DH and I for these last few weeks. It's been just the 2 of us for over 6 years now (plus a fur baby), so this will be a big adjustment.

We have a busy week this week, so lots of projects to keep us busy. We've made an agreement to stop projects on Saturday so we can just enjoy each other and relax a little before the LO joins us. I'm actually really looking forward to this after all the crazy projects and such we've worked on for the past few months.

We also plan to take a short trip at the end of my maternity leave, so I've been enjoying looking at Air bnbs for that trip, even though we won't be booking it until after the baby comes.

I go back and forth from thinking I have so much time left to get stuff done to holy crap she could come at any time. So I do a lot of little projects (baby laundry, cleaned the microwave, print off freezer meal grocery lists, etc) and then sit on my butt. I am only 35 weeks and feel like I will go over because she is so high and seems quite snug. Although I had a leep procedure done about 8ish years ago and can't help but think that may factor when I go into labor once she drops and puts some more pressure down there.

I selfishly want her to come a week early though because my work is starting a new staffing module plan August 15th (I'm due the 21st). This new staffing plan is gonna be a shit show (cutting staffing, adjusting shift start times, brand new courier company for all the lab samples we get from surrounding clinics/hospitals, and moving a bunch of referral work to the mother ship hospital). DH who is a lab lead over at the mother ship hospital even said it would be awesome if she came the 13 or 14. Ha!

  • @midwestbaby how does the leep procedure affect labor/delivery?  I had a leep done about 10 years ago, and had my son 4 years later. It was never brought up as an issue. And hasn't for this baby either.

I will not be induced until 41w5d so Aug 27th. I keep thinking that is when baby will come. It kind of annoys me when my mom told me that Aug 8th my niece is having her first communion...( EDD is Aug 15th) and she has a trip planned on Aug 30th... so she pretty much expects me to give birth on or right around my due date... Talk about a lot of pressure...
  • @Katm89 - I'm sorry your mom is putting pressure on you!  Our family has a lot going on as well the weekend of Aug 6/7 which is a good thing to keep my mind busy.

My midwife said because of the LEEP I may have a weakened cervix and could go into labor sooner. They have been monitoring my cervical length.

  • I didn't know that! I was high risk for my second pregnancy and monitored closely in my third tri, but that was due to having pre e the first baby and having her a month early. They never mentioned a leep procedure could cause him to come early.  he was only 10 days early and healthy.
  • My last day at work is around 38w, but dd will still attend daycare for another 2 months, so I'm mentally counting those as kid free vacation days, so if I go over, I'm really just getting more vacation. Lol.

Also, while I'm over being pregnant, I feel so unprepared to be a mother of 2, so going over also gives me more time to have extra snuggles with my dd and enjoy our last few weeks as a family of 3.
  • I am definitely not ready to go past my due date.  I went three weeks early with my first so going late would be very new to me...but I better start getting ready b/c you never know!

  • I think I'm in denial.  I don't want baby to come early! I'm due Aug 3 and keep telling myself he's coming a week late on Aug 10.  I have lots of visitors planned for the next few weeks, plus the weekly dr appointments so I'm sure it will fly by.
  • @Hannah0726 I'm also 35 weeks and I don't think i've felt BH's either haha.

For me I'm treating this like going on a vacation, Im going to get my haircut, massages, chiropractor appointments, clean, sleep, get my nails done and relax hahaha Once baby come's there will no time for any of that !

  • I can't even wrap my head around going past my EDD. I've been convinced for months that LO is coming early. The universe loves to prove me wrong though - 38 weeks tomorrow and cervix was still closed as of Friday. I'd better start making some plans!

My midwife said because of the LEEP I may have a weakened cervix and could go into labor sooner. They have been monitoring my cervical length.
I had a LEEP in 2007 and while DS came early my cervix never shortened (it was long and closed at 36w3d when my water broke). They still don't know why he came early but said the LEEP didn't affect it.

Thankfully my ob still monitored me during this pregnancy. This time around 30w my cervix started shortening and at my 35w appt last Friday baby is super duper low and my cervix is thin. I'm not dilated yet (at least I wasn't at the appt) but we're thinking I won't make it to 40w this time either.
  • @caitlinj187, I have a handful of August birthdays in my family as well, including MIL, which is also my cousin's birthday. I really don't want LO to be born on their birthday. I love my MIL dearly, but she has really annoyed me during pregnancy, so basically, whatever she hopes for, I hope for the opposite. "Oh, you want another granddaughter? I really hope my kid comes out with a penis!" lol

@Mrsrundell I have been fixating on many different things...like where we are going to live next year( next august). I am meeting a Mortgage broker so we can look at buying a house and sat I am touring 3 townhouse rentals so we can rent if we don't find something lol... I still need to add snacks and toothbrushes to my hospital bag
  • @Hannah0726 I'm also 35 weeks and I don't think i've felt BH's either haha.

Yes!  I'm off this afternoon to get my hair cut (going to do something fun!)  I need to get a pedicure really quickly.  Next week I have to take the kids to the dentist and my daughter for her school physical.  Appointments take up a lot of time.  I should probably look at getting the dog into the vet too!

  • Our first dd was 3 days late, our ds was 4 days late, and our second dd was 9 days early so I have no idea what to expect. It would not hurt my feelings to be late this time as my doctor is out from the 1st -26th of August due to having surgery and my edd is the 24th.
  • @MamaKSquared hahaha I feel ya girl. I don't like complaining about my in laws because in the grand scheme of things they are loving and caring people. Thankfully DH is super good about reading my body language when my buttons are getting pushed.... Which has happened more than once during these 9 months to say the least! Lol.
  • Aww man, I am so not prepared for this LO to come late. My first came at 38 weeks and with my second I was induced at 37 weeks. Both were big and healthy. I'd love for her to stay put for as long as possible, but I don't know how well I'd handle being 40+ weeks.
  • @lotsofsunshine - Yes!  That is my fear!  My other two were big and healthy at 39 weeks.  I'm going to feel miserable at 40+ weeks so I need to stay focused on the positives!

Does anyone have a nagging feeling they will go early? I'm 36 weeks and 2 days...i honestly feel like baby is coming soon, but i am a FTM.... what are the chances... right?
  • @Katm89 Unfortunately, I feel the opposite, that I'm going to go past my EDD.  Like some others have said (@Car0liiine, I think?), I have no BH, no soreness, and no pre-labor symptoms at 38+1 today, so I'm trying to not get my hopes up.
  • Katm89Katm89 member
@entropicallyfavored I had to go to bed last night because I have lighting crotch and pressure on my cervix so bad... and I woke up and My DH was like omg baby dropped... I walk alot at work... so I'm worried that baby will come at 38 weeks... and I just have been so mentally prepared to go late that I feel so unprepared to go into labor
  • @Katm89 That's cool that your husband can tell you dropped!  We've been waiting to see that happen.  I know it's probably not much coming from an internet stranger, but don't be nervous!  Whenever you do go into labor, remember that your body was designed for this!  It will be bad, but then it will end!  You can do it. :)That's what I keep telling myself at least, haha!  No worries mama!  You're more prepared than you think.
  • Katm89Katm89 member
@entropicallyfavored baby had dropped before and then moved back up so who knows... I'm not worried about the labor itself... I'm nervous about not having things ready... like the labor bag... the car seat in the car...the cash in the house for the petsitter for the hospital stay... and just little things like I mapped out our finances for mat leave according to me going into labor around my due date and I will need to adjust everything lol... sounds silly as I type everything lol... but thats what i'm fretting about
