Major meltdowns

my son will be 7 weeks on Sunday. He for the most part is a super happy and very laid back baby. However over the past week he has been fighting any type of sleep SO BAD. first it's the cute nodding, eyes fluttering, etc, but then after sometimes an hour he just gets angry. He will scream and scream and scream, I will feed him, burp him, sometimes try gas drops, rock him, walk with him, car rides are out as he doesn't like being buckled in his car seat, but we will literally do any and everything but he just freaks out. I end up just holding him, rubbing his back and rocking him until he will cry himself to sleep. I feel like I have run out of things to try. Anyone else ever go through this and find anything that helps? It is no fun rocking a screaming baby to sleep!

Re: Major meltdowns

  • Have you tried swaddling him?  I generally fully swaddle my little one with arms in when he is overly fussy and then hold him close while swaying and shushing him.  Seems to do the trick.  My brother who has a couple kids and is a psychiatrist sent me the "Happiest Baby on the Block" book and I swear it has worked so far.

  • @egirl1025 I have. I use a halo sleep sack. I wonder if I should try the blanket swaddle again. I will look into that book! Thank you

  • Have you tried skin to skin tummy time after a meal?  Or wearing him in a wrap.  My son will never fall asleep being held face up or even at the shoulder, but if he is super cranky and we know he's full we wrap him up and walk aroundwith a binky in his mouth and after 5-10 min he's out.
  • @adiaz132003 we do skin to skin but I never tried it during one of his meltdowns, i will definitely add that to my list of dos! Not sure why I didn't think about that sooner!! and he does like being carried but not when he's already freaking out. I don't wrap I have a Tula and ergo and he tries hard to push out. I pretty much can't even get him in then when he's doing it. I sure do hope this is a phase that fizzles out!

DS tries to push out to when we first put him in. But we keep walking, give him his binky and we shush nice and loud and eventually he gives up and rests his head on us.  Once he does that he's asleep in minutes.  Oh and the colic hold aka tiger in the tree hold will get him I stop screaming long enough just for me to get my head together and think of what I wanna do next
  • We have had some success with vigorous swinging (either her swing in the highest setting or in our arms really rocking back and forth or in her car seat swinging back and forth-big arm work out), having her in the bathroom in the rnp while we take showers or bringing her in the shower with us, bath time (she loves bath time) or putting her on our legs and jiggling them up and down. Music or vacuum help too. Basically trying to replicate some of the sensations she felt in utero.

We ordered the happiest baby on the block DVD that has come highly recommended. And we just keep mixing it up knowing that this too shall pass. Its hard not to want to just lose your mind a little though!
  • Something's that work for us is I throw her swaddle blanket in the dryer to heat up and the wrap her up tight and sometimes give her a paci and in no time she is out. Another thing is white noise. I downloaded a white noise for babies app. We were in the car and the paci wouldn't settle her so I got my phone out and turned on the hairdryer one and she settled in seconds and was out within a minute. The app is called sound sleeper.

Kindred spirits! As much as I wish you were not going through this....I'm glad I'm not alone.

@alitria, I thought my guy might just be congested (I give him saline drops in the morning and right before bedtime, he does just fine) and though I am going to try giving him drops midday to see if that helps, I think he is just purple crying. Thanks for the link!

Our daughter does this. We have taken to swaddling her then putting her in the Moby wrap. She falls asleep from the body contact and movement but stays asleep in the swaddle, then we just fish her out and plop her in her bed. Works great for us when she is overtired and just upset but fed, changed, and burped.
