We did our "maternity session" last weekend. I really wanted it to be more of a last photo session as a family of three and our photographer did a beautiful job capturing our family. She persuaded me to take a couple by myself (hate photos of just me), so sharing one here.
Just a snipit from our shoot last weekend I love the pics, but def didn't realize how big I was getting all over - everyone keeps telling me I'm all belly, but these photos tell another story, oy!
@SkiChic626 So cute! I can't help but wonder how much of a struggle it was to get you up off the ground after that bottom shot. Haha it wouldn't have been pretty if it was me!
Hahaha thanks! I was actually fine....I've been hoping up and down without having time to think about it lately because we've been potty training DD, so lots of me needing to run to the bathroom with her, so I'm getting practice lol
I have my maternity shoot schedule for this evening at sunset. Out of all the day's this week it's decided to go an be pouring rain most of the day. In the evening it's supposed to clear up a bit but I doubt the sun will be out like in most maternity photo shoots.
Has anyone done one where it was a cloudy / rainy day? Could be different and make for some interesting photo's (we will shoot by the lake/park etc). Or should I just cancel it and move it to another day when I know there will be sun.
@terezakatarina the sun didn't pop out for mine until the last 5 minutes of our shoot. It was cloudy and overcast, but no rain. Mine were taken in a park and the photographer was able to capture some really gorgeous photos with only natural light.
@LWC1112 ok this might be ok then? Today is literally just muggy out, not even clouds just a gray sky so i'm wondering. Otherwise clouds look great in photo shoot's. Maybe I'll just go with it
@terezakatarina I was a professional photographer - yes cloudy is fine. It will give a more diffused look to the light in the images. The images will look less blown out (extreme highlights and shadows) I actually prefer shooting on cloudy days because it allows the colors and the subjects to be the focus, not the amazing use of sunbeams The first picture is a cloudy day, the second a sunny day. See how much more detail you get on the white dress on a cloudy day? And you won't have awkward shadows - like if the kiddo in picture 2 had not positioned her hand just so, that shadow would be over her eyes. (Neither image is mine, thank you google)
@sbelle474 We didn't with our first. I actually was not into the idea at all then. However, looking back, all I have are the awkward selfies I took of myself during that pregnancy and a few that are not horrible from our shower. I'm always the one behind the camera it seems.
This time I really wanted photos of our family as it is now. DD will never remember being an only child, so the sentimental side of me wanted one last shoot of us this way. I had her take a few "maternity" style ones just so I have a couple of me not looking like a whale or as an awkward selfie.
I think it is personal preference. And the photos don't need to be professional. My advice would be to just have someone snap a couple photos of you if you don't want to do the maternity route.

Thoughts?
Every photographer I've ever worked with say they prefer to shoot when it's overcast because there are no shadows, etc. to contend with.
@sbelle474 Just don't do what a client of mine did- she decided she wanted maternity pictures after all - right after her water broke. She ran into my studio doing labor breathing, and we got a few shots off real quick (with a pause for a contraction or three) and I threw her out to get the heck to labor and delivery. I figured rather than argue with her, that would be quicker.
It was her third, so I was terrified it would be quicker than she was expecting, and we'd have a bit more than we bargained for! I did finally say "No, I will NOT show you your images now crazy lady, come back when that baby is born!" (normally I did same day view / order)
@sbelle474 I am on m fourth pregnancy and have never done official maternity photos, just bump pics that I take or someone else takes. I kind of wish I had done them because everyone looks amazing!
Decided I better go ahead and get some pictures or I might regret it. Just an informal, last minute thing. DH's cousin took the pics of us in their grandmother's field. DH took this last one with his phone. He normally sucks at taking pics so I was pretty impressed with this one lol.
My sister usually isn't the best at taking pictures, I basically have to set everything up and she pushes the button, but she did a pretty good job taking these. Taken at 35w1d
Everyone looks so great! We have a friend who is starting a photography business, so we've done 2 sessions with her. Here are a couple of my favorites from our session at 32 weeks. We just did another session yesterday and I'm really looking forward to getting a sneak peak of those!
@BrunetteBabe722 I'm seriously in love with your shots. I'm not usually a huge fan of bare belly shots (specifically for me) but I'm a little obsessed with your take on it! Beautiful!!
