I have my 38w appt tomorrow. I have made it clear that I do NOT want to go to 41w like I did with my DD, but should I wait till the 39w appt to start asking about how they go about it? Or should I bring it up tomorrow? I know this lo could still come before 40w and I am not opting for induction before 40w but would like an end date by that point.

So far this induction has been a dream except for the hour waiting for the epi. @mrsmommya I'm all for self advocation so I don't think it's too early to still make a plan and hope you go before it

@mrsmommya At my 38 week appointment today I brought up being induced a day or two after my due date instead of going to 41. We will talk more seriously next week and schedule a date if need be but I think it's good to just bring it up and see what your doc thinks. Could help ease your mind as well.

@mrsmommya I scheduled mine at my 38 week appt last week as well. My ob and I were hoping that by having it scheduled he or she will decide to come before then. It's scheduled for a couple days after 40 weeks.

@Backbypopulardemand I waited 5 hours for epidural, the anesthesiologist was in the OR. It was the longest wait of my life lol. I feel your pain. Hope everything is still going well!

Brought up induction today. She said since I am dilated to 2cm then I have a favorable cervix for induction! So at next weeks appt (39w) we get to pick a day which will probably be just after 40w...and of course hope that she comes before it

Currently in the hospital now for my 4pm induction. It's only been 1.5 hours and my bum is already starting to ache from this uncomfortable hospital bed! I have a feeling it's going to be a long night...

@simplymizzj My back and hips were so sore sitting in that bed for my induction! If you can, I highly recommend spending time on the birthing ball throughout the process, it really relieves that pain!! (And helped speed up labor for me, my water broke on the ball! I wish I'd asked for it earlier!)

@simplymizzj If you are still able to move around, I sat in a rocking chair for a lot of it. Just sitting up somewhere else might help.

Today my mom gave me a hard time bc I told her the doctor wants to induce at 40+4 next week... Lady I've been dilated for a month! The doc knows what he's doing.

@whataboutscience Thanks - they have me constantly hooked up to the monitor to check baby's heart rate so I haven't been able to go anywhere. Plus, trying to get some sleep in now so that I have enough energy for tomorrow but every position is just so darn uncomfortable. Hopefully I'll be able to move around more when the morning comes. At least I got my birthing ball...

@mrsmommya - I haven't tried that but I have tried hand expression / nipple stimulation but clearly I'm still here. It more just leads to me hurting myself so I stopped doing it.

@mrsmommya I've tried nipple stimulation (by hand not pump) and it gives me strong contractions, but both times they've gone away as soon as I've fallen asleep. From what I've read you are supposed to do it for 1 hour, 3 times a day.

@mrsmommya I wasn't really trying to induce labor, but was playing around with my breast pump to see what it felt like, and started having BH. So I stopped lol. Plus I was also starting to express some colostrum and wanted to save it for baby.

Going to start pitocin in a bit after cervadil did very little to help my cervix. 38 weeks and feeling a little overwhelmed! But I've, we've got this!

I wanted to avoid induction at all cost, I have read statistics on how drastically the chances of needing an emergency c-section go up with them, however that could be for a million other reasons that go along with being late anyways. So dad has the BAR exam out of town on the 26th and I'm due on the 28th, at last appointment doc said I was 2 cm dilated and progressing right on time but that if by some miracle I don't go into labor between now and this test he wants me to come in on the 28th to be induced. I'm really struggling with the fact that doc just wants to cut it off right at my due date, he's made comments previously that have made me realize we might get into a little bit of a fight with him on delivery day, "Don't go to a lamaze class they'll just fill your head with silly things you don't need to know. I do this every day and I'll tell you everything you need to know. I'm the professional things will go my way."

Now, I'm not afraid to speak my mind and have things that are safe for baby and important for her and my health happen, but I'm worried that he's just trying to rush her out. I'm 26, first baby, not high risk. Wondering if any of you had any advice on this possible induction?
Also, how many of you are printing out birth plans? I want immediate skin-to-skin contact, and I do not want an epidural and he has not even asked me about my plans (which goes along with the previous dialogue we have had). Would that be more of a reason to have it printed out on paper, or does this sound like more of a situation where dad and I are just going to have to repeatedly tell people how I want it to go? We had a bit of a scare with me getting dehydrated and going into false labor a few weeks ago, and the nurses are not very open to change. I was getting extremely nauseous laying on my back and kept trying to lay on my side and they would walk in and scold me (because I was messing up the monitoring), I basically had to tell them to "f" off because I was trying not to projectile vomit all over the room and laying on my side was what was preventing that from happening. I'm very sensitive to medication so I was also wondering if the pitocin is worth taking because I'm afraid I'm going to end up throwing up on top of all the other fun labor stuff?

(Yes I should have changed doctors and hospitals when all of this started up, but I already had to change once when we moved out of state and it was a nightmare trying to get my old paperwork from previous doctor, we actually never did, and I had to redo all of my tests. Also my choices of doctors are limited because of my insurance. And I'm 38 weeks so it'd be insane to change now.)

@Kfelt18 you can change doctors at anytime it doesn't matter if you're 38 weeks. Also, I was induced not because I wanted to be but because my water broke first and I tested positive for the strep. Shit happens, I labored for 2 days in the hospital before they started the induction process because I wasn't moving along quick enough which meant to me if my water didn't break I could have been at home. If your husband is in the room he is your advocate for what you want if you can't speak for yourself, that's part of his job. I did everything you do before you ask for the epidural and still needed it, so nice thoughts going in not wanting it but labor might change your mind at least when you get to the 2-3 min apart contractions. I didn't feel sick with the pitocin but they do/can give you medication if you get sick to your stomach. Write down your birth plan, skin to skin, delayed cord clamping, hold off on the bath for 24 hours. Write it all down. Induction doesn't mean emergency c-section, just possible c-section. I believe the number for an emergency c-section is 1% of actually happening. You might run the risk of having a c section with being induced.

@Kfelt18 I would say as a first time mom you should give it till 41w if that is what you feel comfortable doing. At the 40w appt your doc should be doing an u/s to check fluid, size, position, cord/placenta condition, and even a non-stress test. Since you actually are showing signs of progression I think doctors consider that a favorable cervix for induction but you are the boss and you should speak your mind.

@Kfelt18 i'm lurking from June2016 club but you and your dr sound a lot like my situation and feelings going in. In my case dr wanted to do a c-section bc u/s estimated a big baby. I pushed back and he gave me the alternative to induce @39w which we chose. I felt like he was working us into his schedule but didn't feel like we had many options. Induction took a loooong time, but after only 6 hours or so of actual labor he wanted to do a c-sec bc "it wasn't progressing quickly enough" even though I was already 8 cm dilated. It was Sunday eve, i'd been there all wknd, and i think dr wanted to go home. We asked to wait longer and sure enough 2 hours later he came back, i was 10 cm and ready to go, and he was all chipper and positive. DD was born 2 hours later. You and dad do need to advocate for yourself but it's stressful and distressing but pay attention to their tricky words... they say things like "we can wait but in my experience... you still won't be far enough along and baby could be in distress so we'll have to do a c-section anyway..." it's alarming to hear baby in distress but notice they don't say IS, or definitely will be.

So I was induced at 41+4 last time and am hoping to go into labor on my
own but feeling like it's not in my
favor. Have not been able to find good stats on this, just antecdotal information. A friend's sister was induced at 41 weeks for all 5 of her kids. My induction was not horrible and I don't know how we'll manage extra appointments and nonstress tests with a toddler. Just curious, anyone included late first time and start labor spontaneously second time around?

@whataboutscience I am a FTM so I don't have any personal experience, however, I do have a friend who was induced with her first and had a spontaneous labor with her second at 38-ish weeks. Good luck

Sorry this is really long...

Since I'm having the induction conversation tomorrow with my OB, I wanted to ask you ladies what the risks are to NOT being induced (ie....waiting it out). I have gone into these last few weeks with the thought that whatever happens, happens, and I will go with the flow. But I also would prefer an unmedicated vaginal birth if possible. At my last appt on Tuesday (my due date), I was a fingertip dilated and she was unable to do a sweep. Since then, I've had some pelvic pressure, very occasional painful contractions and infrequent BH (fewer than I've had in the weeks prior).

My original due date based on ovulation (which I can confirm from charting/temping) was 7/18, so I kind of want to wait until a week beyond that. My OB wanted to induce later this week (based on the revised due date of 7/12). So far, my NST, BP and other measurements have all been great and based on belly measurements, I'm "on track". My only "high risk" factor is being GBS positive.

I'm a pretty easy-going person and am not generally a good advocate for myself, so I want to come armed with information and knowledge about the risks of delaying induction.

@sboston06 I'm surprised they revised your due date to the 12th if you knew your dates. At my practice, if you actually were trying, and know your dates, they are happy to stick with those. They only resort to ultrasound if you are clueless. To me, it seems like you would be fine to go to the following Monday (25th), because that would really only be one week past the 18th. It's also still in the safe range of 2 weeks past the 12th if they insist on that date.

@sboston06 I've heard mixed things about risks of waiting it out. My midwife said after 42 weeks the placenta starts to deteriorate. However I've seen articles that state that's not true. There seems to be a slightly higher risk of stillbirth but not by much. My office will not induce until 42 weeks unless there is some type of concern (based on nonstress test, ultrasound, etc) so I'll be waiting it out until then unless I go into labor on my own. So, I think if you wanted to wait it out a little longer it would be ok. I'd go off of the 7/12 due date if you are going to wait another week though. That way you know for sure you aren't going over 42 weeks.

I had to be induced due to pre-e and my cervix was closed. The induction was such a process and led me to be tied to the bed which I did it want. I had high blood pressure and the medicine they used kept me in bed from the beginning. If your induction leads to pitocin, my doc said they have to have you in bed to get iv fluids. I had wanted to be able to move around so mentally that part was challenging. Also, with being GBS positive, do you have iv fluids that keep you in bed? I'm not sure... I've also heard the placenta starts to deteriorate after 40 weeks but a lot of docs do further monitoring to check in on you. Good luck with whatever you decide.

@whataboutscience DD was late so I was induced at 41w 3d. This time DS was born at 39w 3d and I had gone into labor on my own. When I finally went to the hospital I did end up getting a small dose of pitocin for 3 hours to help me progress, which I was fine with co sidering that I felt my body responded positively to pitocin the first time around.
Hopefully you can go into labor on your own...I know it's frustrating waiting around for baby to arrive once your due date has come and gone.

@MDmomma1217 that is encouraging. I went into labor at 41w with DD...one day shy of induction. I also had pitocin at 7cm for a short time. I am now 38+5 and will be inducing just after 40w...getting an actual date at Tuesday's appt. I am hoping to go on my own before 40w too.

@sboston06 I am like you where sometimes I am not the best advocate and I'm too polite. Which leads to me not being happy or at ease with the information or outcome. Any chance your DH can come with you and help be firm with questions and answers? Sorry no help with the actual question. I don't know what the risks are... I would definitely be firm about your date through. That's a valid argument to use when asking about waiting a week.

@sboston06 So ACOG (American Congress of OBs and Gynos) recommends induction between 41 and 42 weeks and states that there are increased risks at 42 weeks. A lot of practices seem to perform inductions right at the 41 week mark for some reason though. I really wanted to go med free last time and when my doctor said they don't "let" you go past 41 weeks I asked what if I say no? She saw that I seemed determined and then pretty happily explained they would like me to come in for extra nonstress tests to make sure baby looks to be doing okay. I was induced at 41+4 because it was about to be the weekend and I really didn't like the doctor that was in on Monday when I hit 42 weeks.

Thank you all for the input. I'm just going to be up front with my concerns and my thoughts and be open to hearing from my OB. I'm hoping tomorrow I'll be a little more dilated and get a sweep and go into labor, but if not then we'll see what the week brings!

Still 2cm at 39w STM ugh! Was hoping this pregnancy would be different. 40w appt next Monday and if all looks good then we will be evicting her Wednesday night or Thursday day! I will have a 6/28 birthday and a 7/28 birthday. So in 9 days and counting I will have my outside baby no matter what!!

39+4 and Doctor swept my membranes today. Fingers crossed I'm like my mom and this sends me into labor. If not we are schedule for Sunday 7/24. Things just got real!

I'm 40+3 today, had an appointment and doc seems to be in NO rush to schedule for me to be induced lol. I'm impatient but she's probably right to let nature take its course. I have an ultrasound on Friday just to check on baby...

I had very small contractions all day yesterday, late last night had major "clearing out" and same when I woke up this morning. Have had more smallish contractions this morning. She did another sweep at my appointment and now I'm very sore in my pelvis and feel like I can't walk right and baby is head bunting my cervix over and over. Ugh. Ready for this to start, hopefully soon or I might go crazy. (Considering MIL is staying here until the birth) let's go baby!!
