Isn't way too early to feel baby move?

I am due Jan 6th... 13 weeks along. At my dr's appt last week, my doctor asked if I was feeling the baby move yet. I said no, not at all, I don't feel anything. She acted kind of surprised and said 'really?" I said 'Isn't it early for that?" she said, well it usually happens earlier once you've had kids before. I have a 10 year old and a 5 year old... I remember being well into my second trimester before feeling my first son, but can't remember at all when it happened with my second son.  Just wondering if anyone else who due the same time is actually already feeling their baby, or if their doctors have asked the same thing?

Re: Isn't way too early to feel baby move?

  • I started feeling baby move around 13 weeks. It feels like the same feeling you get going down a roller coaster... Little surges of that. I wondered the same thing and asked a bunch of my girlfriends, many of them started feeling baby moved at 9, 10, 12 weeks... So no I don't think it's too early :)

  • I thought the same but I'm 13 weeks today and have felt a few flutters. At my ultrasound last week baby was SO active so I'm not that surprised.
I didn't feel my daughter until 16/17 weeks last time.

  • I'm a FTM at 14 weeks. This weekend we were sitting on the couch after dinner and out of nowhere I felt this weird sensation like going downhill on a rollercoaster and then a quick twinge. I jumped off the couch because I was so freaked out! I haven't felt it since that moment and I know it was really early, but I can't help wondering if the feeling could have been the baby moving.

  • I feel my baby move. I've felt this nugget since about 11.5 weeks. With my daughter, I felt her around the same time. It's a weird, sort of nauseating, flipping in my uterus feeling...but I recognize it. I didn't feel an actual kick on the outside with my first until 18 weeks.
  • I felt baby around 14 weeks last time and I'm pretty sure I'm getting some flutters this time around 11.5.

  • I am due Jan 5th and I have not felt baby move yet. I have a 5 year old as well. I "think" I was about 20-22wks before I felt movement with DS. Its hard to remember when it was that long ago.

So I'm not crazy! I swear I first felt my daughter when I was 13 weeks, but everyone says no, that's too early.

  • With my daughter I felt her around 15 almost 16 weeks and it felt like a feather. This pregnancy I've felt on Sunday 14 weeks and it felt like a drumming feeling. More reason to go with my gut that its a boy lol
  • I got asked that too at 10 weeks by my midwife, and then she qualified it by saying they just have to ask as a standard question because sometimes 2nd time moms, women with twins, and women who are very small or thin can feel it earlier. I personally haven't felt anything but gas pains, but I've been thinking about how we basically have a little guppy in there just swimming around.

  • I felt baby move a little more than a week ago at 13 weeks, and just at night when I was falling asleep, it jolted me awake!
This is my second bean so I'm pretty sure (like 90%) that it was actually the baby and not just gas. Just watched a video of my sisters baby (she's 32 weeks) literally trying to escape and I cannot wait!!!
  • I think I felt baby move last week but it was quick and hasn't happened again so it could have been gas :). This is my second and I'm 13 weeks. With my first I felt him move around 19/20 weeks. At my OB appointment the other day, she said maybe around 17 weeks since you tend to feel them a little sooner with each pregnancy since you know what you are feeling. I must say, I love that my OB sets realistic expectations for me. It's awesome if I feel baby sooner but at least I don't think I need to or something is wrong if I don't. And maybe they do need to ask but I think the way my OB brought it up is awesome because if I had felt the baby move, I could say something but if I hadn't, I'm not wondering what's wrong.

Haha, I've been thinking about this, too. And I think it's kind of weird that we can't feel it. I'm a STM with twins, but definitely not very small or thin, so two out of three but I haven't felt anything yet.

  • I am at 13.5 weeks and a FTM but measuring ahead and way higher then I should be (my OB said I am as high as I should be at 18w) and I definitely feel small movement kind of like butterflies but almost nauseating. I don't think much of it though and can't wait until I feel actual kicking!

  • I felt my son at 15 weeks. I very rarely felt him throughout my pregnancy though. I had an anterior placenta. I am thankful for my healthy baby, but it would be nice to be able to feel more this time around and for my hubby to be able to feel baby kicks!
  • I think it's super weird that right now I have something as big as a strawberry moving around, but I can't feel a thing. What?? I can't believe it has to be something bigger than an orange before I'll actually feel it move. I hope it happens to me a lot sooner. I'm pretty in tune with my body and sensations, so I'm hoping I'll notice it closer to 14 weeks than 18 weeks.

  • I would say your doctor being surprised that you're not feeling movement at 13 weeks is weird. With DS (2nd pregnancy) I felt distinct movements (flutters) at 14 1/2 wks and with DD (1st pregnancy) it was more around 17 wks. I am nearing 12 wks and I feel bubbles in my lower stomach but since baby is only the size of a lime, I'm sure I have a couple weeks left to feel him/her ;)

  • So today (14w2d) baby B was kicking me right in the cervix (placenta covered but still). Pretty much a troll doll (that size this week) is kicking me right in the lady garden from the inside and I feel nothing. What?? So weird.
  • Yeah, I'm with  @ThePax89 I also think the pointy baby elbows sticking out are super gross!

  • I have felt my baby move/ kick since i was 10 weeks but the nurse at my 11 week appt was going over questions and said feeling the baby move..then she answered her own ? And said no its way too early yet.. i was like what? Ive had babies before and i know what im feeling.. but i just left it at that..

I haven't felt anything yet. At my NT there was swimming, kicking, and punching and it felt so crazy that I couldn't tell at all.
  • Im not sure if what I felt was the babies, but I choose to think yes. I felt a few "flutters" last night at 13w2d.

  • At this point, I am having ALL the tummy feels. my baby could be kick boxing me and I don't think I'd recognize it. Digestion and gas gurgles, stretching, pulling, itching, pinching sensations. I can't say I've felt anything like the rollercoaster feeling you guys describe though, so I guess not yet.
  • I am feeling flutters and one time I felt something like movement but how do I know that's what I am feeling?
  • Third time mom, I'm 15 weeks and very tiny.  Last week at my US LO was doing barrel rolls and I didn't feel a thing.  I have never felt any of my babies before 16 weeks.

I'm sure people do feel their babies earlier than expected but I never really take anything i feel seriously until around 15 or 16 weeks, maybe 14.  I've felt babies move and recently (DS2 is only 11 months) so I definitely know what they feel like. I've also felt phantom kicks in between pregnancies that felt unbelievably real so I know that my mind can and does play tricks on me sometimes. Maybe some of the things I feel are baby and not just gas or muscle twitches but I'm not ready or convinced enough to call it official yet.

This will sound random or strange maybe, but is it possible the uterus is resting on the clitoral muscle or similar muscles? I'm only wondering bc sometimes it feels like there's a tiny muscle twitch down there but in the inside, somewhere that I imagine is above the cervix. I'm curious if baby kicks is putting pressure on that muscle once in a while, and since those muscles are sensitive to pressure, I'm feeling the effect of the pressure, but not the actual kick. To clarify, it doesn't feel "good" but it just feels like a sensation. It could also be an effect of the shift in everything down there right now to make room, and so that makes for strange sensation..just wondering if anyone has insight on this.

  • I'm 12 weeks with my second baby.  I didn't feel my first flutters with baby #1 until 15-16 weeks.  I just started feeling tiny flutters every now and then when I lie down in bed.  But who knows, it could be gas.
  • I'm due January 4th! My doctor hasn't asked me that, but I have wondered when I would feel her move and what it would feel like. My mom told me it would feel like "butterflies in your stomach" and I'm not so sure I've felt that yet, or maybe I'm not that in-tune to it. I've felt different little "twinges" down there from time to time; maybe if you feel something like that it could be some movement? I wouldn't worry! My little one was very active at my last ultrasound but even then I couldn't feel anything. It all varies from person to person, as with everything in pregnancy. But I can't wait till it happens! Good luck with your babe!

Weird is feeling a knee cap later in the pregnancy. So gross (I mean...miraculous)
I just had a laugh out loud moment!! So embarrassing :)
  • I'm not sure if it's baby or that I really want it to be baby but I feel flutters and pulsing in my side belly when I'm laying on my side.
  • 14.5w and i feel gas.

  • With my first, I first felt baby move very low. It was a weird sensation, not so much the roller coaster feeling that others have described. More of a flutter low in my uterus. This one, I thought I felt last week but haven't felt the same feeling again so it was probably gas. I don't expect to feel this one until closer to 16-18 weeks.
