Re: Randoms 7.7

  • I selfishly started this thread because I have a question for STM+.  With DS, I only carried to 34 weeks, with the last 4 spent mostly in a lovely hospital room.  I have friends who tell me they were so freaking hot at the end of their pregnancy they wouldn't suggest buying larger maternity size fall/winter clothes but throw an open cardigan over my summer tanks.

I have fall/winter maternity clothes from previous pregnancy but I'm thinking with twins I'll need bigger than a medium.

MY long winded question is, did you dress fall/winter appropriate or did you find yourself hot and wearing layers?  I want to scoop up some more tanks as they go on sale if I'll likely be layering instead of wearing sweaters.

  • I agree with that advice. I'm not buying any winter clothes. I might have to get a couple of pairs of leggings but I think throwing a sweater over will be sufficient. I probably won't even do that since it won't be much below 60 here.
  • @DiFazette I delivered in a snowy April so I had mostly winter pregnancy. At no point did I purchase anything very winter specific but just layered and wore my coats unzipped at the end when they didn't fit

  • @DiFazette I had a few sweaters that I'd wear over leggings, but I definitely ran too hot for much winter wear last time. I usually wore maxi skirts, tanks, and cardigans, and I would promptly strip as much as I could off upon walking 10 feet and working up a sweat. Of course, I also live in the south, so winter wasn't crazy cold.

  • I'm not a STM, but even before pregnancy I ran hot--I can sweat like a man at the drop of a hat. So I'm probably going to dress for winter the same way I always do--layers. I'll have a tank and cardigan, or a super light long-sleeve shirt with a bubble vest if I'm outside a while. Or just a long, lightweight sweater. Nothing too heavy.

I loved maternity leggings, tanks, and long wrap sweaters. I have them in mostly neutral colors. It's easy to dress up with a cute pair of boots and a necklace or lounge around the house.

  • I live in AZ so winter isn't very cold....but....I typically wear sweaters from Oct-March because I like them and my work is always freezing. I bought 2 very light maternity sweaters for work. If I didn't have to dress up for work,  I would stick with layers of non wintery clothes. I got super hot the last few weeks of my last pregnancy but it was 95-105 degrees outside...

  • layers for sure! Leggings, tanks, cardigans, etc. I think the only cold weather specific item worth investing in is a good jacket. I LOVED my maternity coat when I was pregnant with DD and I'm so sad that I got rid of it (I swore I was one and done)

  • Just FYI - I've been trying to keep on top of Zika info and it looks like still to date no cases of mosquito-born Zika have been diagnosed in the US. :)

My Dr stated the same thing last week during my visit - whoot!!

  • @sourlemon I too love spreadsheets and organization. I have a "Pre-Baby To-do List" that's a few pages long. I get a lot of satisfaction from crossing off tasks. Today I was able to cross off "Get registered for birth and breastfeeding classes"! Huzzah!
  • I great big puffy heart Shutterfly!!! They currently have a 40% off everything sale as well as free shipping on any order more than $39. I just finished Christmas shopping for my parents as well as the DH's dad! Score

  • @jennbaylor12 You go girl! Earlier today I was thinking about Christmas shopping, and thought maybe it was too early to get a few presents, but you have inspired me!

I Never get started this early but 'it was an offer I couldn't refuse' I made photo books for DH (and I) for Father's day of my pregnancy through DS's 1st birthday and then a second book of from 1st bday through DS's 2nd bday this March. Now that I'm expecting, we'll switch the books to go from this March through this Christmas/end of year and then will do annual books on a go-forward. I used the discounts to order one of each of the books we've already made for each parent set! They'll get them for Christmas on a annual basis now as well

  • Weird rando question - anyone been to a Sullivan's lately?  I normally wear what I feel good in when we go to a nicer place but I'm in a weird stage where I don't fill out my maternity dresses but look like a stuffed sausage in pre-pregnancy clothes.  Any insight on the dress code?  They say it's business casual but I remember it being a bit more formal than that.  It's been a few years since I've been to one.

  • Okay so I'm throwing this in the random thread because I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place.  My wonderful aunt is throwing my baby shower. We're doing it at her house. Now she said to me to keep the list to around 40-45 people. So I did my list which is 28 people. I told my MIL what the deal is and I asked her to keep her list to 15-20 people and she gave me her list today and it has 26 people!!! and 5 of those include kids under 1. Why are we including people's kids and do people bring their kids to baby showers??? I thought it's the same as a bridal shower. Now she is the kind of person who gets offended by everything - how do I approach this? Or do I not and just give my aunt the list minus the babies because I guess technically they don't count.

I've thrown about a dozen wedding and baby showers in the past few years (I come from a huge family) and while I've never included the kiddos on the invites, I always just assume that many mommas will bring them along. Often times they're nursing or leave the older ones home with dad or just want to pass the babes around. If it were me hosting I wouldn't have any issue with the kiddos.  That is assuming there's room for that many people where your shower is taking place!
  • @sammyl1221 I would just explain the situation to your MIL and ask if there's anyone she can take off her list. Some people include kids at a baby shower and some don't; if you're making that call, tell her you don't want kids if you really don't want them there or if it's your aunt's decision, ask her what her feelings are on it.
  • @KateH1216 I guess it's the blatant disregard of the count that's throwing me off. If she was including kids and the list was 20 I'd be fine with it. My aunt doesn't have a big house - when she said 40-45 people I thought that was stretching it and her yard is very small so it's not like we will have outdoor space to use either.

@sammyl1221I would tell her what you just said--the size of the space is a concern, would you mind shortening your list? My aunt is bring gracious in letting us use her home, and I want to be cognizant of the space, as well as the comfort of our guests. If she gets super offended, maybe she should throw a separate shower. It's not her home, so she can't willy-nilly invite as many people as she'd like. That's disrespectful to the hostesses, imo.

I just got word that one of my childhood friends lost her mom suddenly today due to an untreatable brain aneurysm. This lady was like a second mom to me growing up. I'm saddened, in shock,  and so worried for my friend. Her mom was young, a beautiful, kind soul, and so full of life. Her mom was her world.
  • @mamax2 Oh gosh I am so sorry. Sudden deaths are so shocking and are unfair. My thoughts are with you and your friend during this hard time.
  • @mamax2 - I am so incredibly sorry for your loss and the loss for your friend!!

  • @Mamax2 I'm so sorry for your loss.

@sammyl1221 I might be alone in this but I'm not sure it's a big deal. Sure, she invited 6 more people than you told her too but 5 are kids under 1yr old. Chances are they won't increass costs and will only be a slight burden in terms of space since they are probably not walking, or not walking well enough to cause many problems. So, she only invited one extra person and someone may cancel or not show.

I dont think inviting moms with young kiddos is uncommon at all but it's your shower and you can request a child free event.
  • @sharkey I may have read it wrong, but I think she was saying that she invited 6 extra people, but 5 of them have children under 1. If that's the case, that's a lot of extra people. >.<
  • @Mamax2 I'm so sorry for your loss.

@sammyl1221 I'm afraid my kid comes with me to all parties wedding and baby these days. I'll check with the hostess if it doesn't seem like a low key party. But this weekend DD will be going to a coed baby shower with us. If you take away my only other source of childcare and don't specify it's baby free, she's coming. I'm also a bull in an etiquette china shop. I'm gonna break some shit. Oops

  • @Sharkey it's 26 + kids. She specified guest name + baby's name.  Sorry if that wasn't clear.
Again if it was 20 with kids that's that's fine but it's the lack of consideration. I'm just going to have to ask her to shorten her list.
@LinziLoo09 I think by asking the hostess it's fine. It's not like you're showing up and not saying something.

  • @sammyl1221 if space is a concern then that's a completely different situation!  Personally 40ish people at a shower would totally overwhelm me!  I think using the space concern to whittle down the list is totally appropriate in this case. MIL may not like it, but it's not her place to set the rules on this one!

Can you have 2 separate showers??? 40 is a lot......but i personally prefer smaller events. Whoops- thought baby showers were typically kid friendly...maybe thats regional thing?.

Thank you ladies for your condolences.
  • @Toller02 if his mom wants to do one she can but she hasn't offered so I'm assuming that's out of the question.  It might be a regional thing because in the last 2 years I've been to 7 baby showers and there might have been a child or two but nothing past immediate family. Like someone's niece or nephew.

@sammyl1221 I'm sure it will all work out just fine in the end!- but it sucks to have the added stress of people not being more considerate in the meantime. Could you put your MIL in contact with your aunt and have them just duke it out with eachother? :)
