Sooooo, I failed my 2 hour GT test... and I feel like crap. I knew this could be a strong possibility, because my lack of thyroid combined with being overweight pre-pregnancy put me at a higher risk, but I've been more proactive with having a healthy balanced diet since getting pregnant, and I have been exercising more. I guess it lulled me into a false sense of security?
Just generally feeling crappy. My midwife said I was on the low end of the fail rate, which means pending meeting with the diabetic educator and the endocrinologist, I can probably get by with just diet and exercise control, rather than having to use medication, which is the one positive thing I'm hanging onto here. But beyond that, all I can think about is how my diagnosis can impact my daughter later in life, and that's really whats making me feel like crap.
Encouragement appreciated, and I have posted on the GD check in board.
Re: GD diagnosis :(
As for the higher chance that your daughter could develop Type 2 later in life... this is my thoughts regarding my own children (since this is my second pregnancy with GD)... They had a higher chance as it was because diabetes runs heavily on both sides of my family. However, I hope teaching them healthy eating habits and activity levels will keep things at bay as long as possible and is as much as I can do. My grandma had GD in her last pregnancy (at 30). As you know, that also put her at higher risk for Type 2. She maintained a healthy weight and lifestyle, and didn't develop Type 2 until she was in her 70s. I know that's anecdotal, but the way I see it is that I can't change that I have GD now, but I can do what I can to make sure myself and my girls do things to try to prevent Type 2.
Hang in there, and know your feelings are normal.
I know that there's a list of things like increased age, previous GD diagnosis, and pre-pregnancy weight that can play a role, but it doesn't seem like they play a huge hand in it necessarily. I've heard from plenty of moms who were young and in shape who had GD during one of their pregnancies (my mom for example. 115 lbs, healthy eater, randomly had GD during her third pregnancy).
So, I hope you can banish your guilt over it. It's not your fault and since you know you have it now, you've got some control over keeping level (without meds, yay!).
