GD diagnosis :(

Sooooo, I failed my 2 hour GT test... and I feel like crap. I knew this could be a strong possibility, because my lack of thyroid combined with being overweight pre-pregnancy put me at a higher risk, but I've been more proactive with having a healthy balanced diet since getting pregnant, and I have been exercising more. I guess it lulled me into a false sense of security?
Just generally feeling crappy. My midwife said I was on the low end of the fail rate, which means pending meeting with the diabetic educator and the endocrinologist, I can probably get by with just diet and exercise control, rather than having to use medication, which is the one positive thing I'm hanging onto here. But beyond that, all I can think about is how my diagnosis can impact my daughter later in life, and that's really whats making me feel like crap.
Encouragement appreciated, and I have posted on the GD check in board.

Re: GD diagnosis :(

  • First, I'm sorry you have GD, and as hard as I know it is, please don't feel guilty.

As for the higher chance that your daughter could develop Type 2 later in life... this is my thoughts regarding my own children (since this is my second pregnancy with GD)... They had a higher chance as it was because diabetes runs heavily on both sides of my family. However, I hope teaching them healthy eating habits and activity levels will keep things at bay as long as possible and is as much as I can do. My grandma had GD in her last pregnancy (at 30). As you know, that also put her at higher risk for Type 2. She maintained a healthy weight and lifestyle, and didn't develop Type 2 until she was in her 70s. I know that's anecdotal, but the way I see it is that I can't change that I have GD now, but I can do what I can to make sure myself and my girls do things to try to prevent Type 2.

Hang in there, and know your feelings are normal.

  • I'm sorry for your diagnosis. Definitely don't feel guilty. It sounds like you've already got a handle on things and I hope you're able to maintain that healthy lifestyle and not have to go on medication.

  • I'm sorry, girl. As far as guilt, I think it's really important for mamas to understand that you can't give yourself GD. I was told by my midwife, nurse, and triage nurse that GD isn't something you can give yourself. Basically, You could have been on the healthiest diet and exercise plan in the galaxy from day 1 and you still would have been GD positive this pregnancy, because that's what your hormones wanted to do. They told me that there's nothing a GD positive mama could have done to prevent GD, the body just goes wacky sometimes.

I know that there's a list of things like increased age, previous GD diagnosis, and pre-pregnancy weight that can play a role, but it doesn't seem like they play a huge hand in it necessarily. I've heard from plenty of moms who were young and in shape who had GD during one of their pregnancies (my mom for example. 115 lbs, healthy eater, randomly had GD during her third pregnancy).

So, I hope you can banish your guilt over it. It's not your fault and since you know you have it now, you've got some control over keeping level (without meds, yay!).

Dropping by to say sorry as well. It sounds reAlly hopeful though that you won't have to take the drugs! Try to stay positive! Just a couple more months :). Luckily you were eating healthy to begin with so that won't be so much of a change.
  • Thank you everyone for your support. It never ceases to amaze me how much better you guys always make me feel and how supportive this board is. It makes such a huge difference, especially considering I have no pregnant friends of my own IRL to commiserate with! Definitely feeling more adjusted about it. I'm actually looking forward to grocery shopping tomorrow and starting clean as I definitely need to do some meal planning to keep myself on track. What I eat isn't so much the problem, it's the times I'm eating, I'm very sporadic, and am definitely guilty of not eating breakfast more than once a week >.<.
