This kid is worse with the blowouts than my son was. I've started calling her Taco (because her middle name is Belle, haha). While my MIL and I were changing her the other night, she pooped and it seriously shot 4 feet off the diaper table and got all over her glider, some of her dolls, the Diaper Genie, etc. MIL and I stood there in shock for a full minute.
Thank you all for the co-sleeping advice! I'm getting more confident with putting her in the PNP - mostly after feeding her and snuggling her for a little bit. I think I just need to keep at it and she'll get the hang of sleeping alone after awhile. She's actually in there right now and has been for about an hour!
July BMB Siggy Challenge: Weird Hot Dog Situations
Harper's skin is getting dry, I've only ever given her two sponge baths, so I'm definitely not over washing.. Any suggestions? I was told no J&J lotion until 6 months
@onesassybishh our pediatrician recommended a Babyganics or Burts Bees for lotion for a newborn if really needed. He actually said we should avoid J&J altogether. We tried some Babyganics after E's first full bath and it helped a ton with his dry skin on his chest.
No soap in the bath besides on hair and then vanicream lotion on body immediately after out of bath... only thing that helped with my Los eczema and dry skin
@onesassybishh the NICU uses aquaphor for dry skin. It has worked really well for Henry's dry skin so far! Has anyone tried filing your babies nails down?Henry is starting to scratch himself and we only have so many sleepers with the mittens built in. He won't keep other mittens or socks on his hands. I'm nervous to try it. Is it better to do when they are sleeping?
@abpl2014 I've heard friends tell us they (somehow) nibble/bite the excess nail off at this stage. We haven't tried yet but probably need to! It just scares me, of course. Like everything does, lol!
Sounds like docs have diff recommendations on lotion/soap. We were told no lotion of any kind for a month. Soap would be fine once we're able to do a full bath. We too have all the babyganics stuff...a foam bath soap, lotion, wipes and creams. I did hear some negative stuff about J&J products so I returned anything I got J&J.
Had the free lactation nurse visit today at home, after stressing about breastfeeding and worried I wasn't feeding Ronan enough I got to breathe a little easier. He was 8lbs at birth, 7.9 when we brought him home and they wanted him to be at 7.3 today, he weighed in at 7.5. Small victories ladies, small victories.
@rakel88 I posted about it in the TW thread for today, but my appetite has come back in full force. I would probably say at 5 days PP is when it kind of hit me that I was super hungry all the time. @abpl2014 at our newborn class they recommended trimming/filing nails while baby's sleeping. We haven't done it yet for Emma, but I really need to. Just another thing that terrifies me!
My mom is staying with us this week to help out, and DH and I just left to grab a few groceries. I realized in the car that this was the first time I had been without my baby for about 10 months, and I totally lost it. My mom is perfectly capable and I trust her with Emma totally, but it was so hard! We got home a bit ago and I was super proud of myself that I made it an hour with only one sobfest!
@abpl2014 we tried filing and I felt like I was filing his skin..We use baby nail clippers while he was sleeping. We have a set with a light so you can see exactly what is nail and what is skin and it's SUPER easy. You can find them on Amazon or probably somewhere like BRU.
@thepen15ismighty I am all about the small victories these days! Today was Milo's First pediatrician appt and I've been super worried he isn't getting enough milk and that he lost too much weight. We weighed 7 lbs at birth, 6lb9oz at discharge and 6lb10oz today! I teared up in the office because I was so sure they were going to say he'd lost like another pound or something.
Today was also my first PP outing, we walked to the pediatricians office and then took the dog for a walk after. It was kind of scary but felt good to get some fresh air for sure. But I am so exhausted now you would think I ran a damn marathon!
@schaze I'm 10 days pp today, hoping it comes back ASAP!! Sounds like it probably will one of these days. Good job getting out and making it! you should definitely be proud
@rakel88 I'm having the same problem. I start feeling dizzy and then realize that I have been forgetting to eat. I'm also forgetting to go to the bathroom.
I have times where I'm super snacky and just want little things. I'm trying to remember to drink a ton of water but will get little dizzy/hungry spells occasionally. Speaking of going to the bathroom, it's so nice to actually be able to GO and have a normal amount of pee lol. Or to drink a few glasses of water without feeling like I'll explode.
My sister suggested the biting the nails down thing which she did with my nephew. It sounds so strange but I've heard a lot of people suggest it. Personally, LO is so squirmy when she's awake that I haven't even tried that route. I waited until she was asleep and used the baby clippers and it went well. Just be careful to not get any skin of course. I tried the nail file but her nails are so soft it's hard to get it to work well without feeling like you're dragging it on their skin like someone else mentioned.
We had our one month appointment today, time flies… Our LO
continued to put on weight so that felt good… But then they sent us to get an
ultrasound on her because her belly seems distended. They think it’s nothing (especially because she was born early) and just want to be safe, but the radiology tech didn’t say anything during the
exam, and they sent us home without talking to the doctor. And no one from the
pediatrician’s office called us to debrief about the results. So of course we
are now having all kinds of anxious thoughts and we’ll have to cope until
tomorrow when someone had better call us! So she seems to be doing well overall
(sleeping and eating well), but that was stressful.
It’s so good to hear about how everyone else is doing!
@WVUPetunia Taco Belle, too funny!!! Hahaha I love it!
@onesassybissh@theshannondee good to know about the lotions
for babies… we’ve been waiting it out but maybe I’ll check out those products
@abpl2014 I tried filing her nail, it hasn’t been super
successful… our NP recommended a cuticle remover but I’m too freaked to use
anything that can actually cut anything… like @TiffRox81 my friend has
recommended biting it off myself…
@thepen15ismighty that’s awesome! a small victory maybe but
a lot of work! It's such a relief when they start gaining weight!
@rakel88 my appetite was also low for the first 2 weeks PP I’d
say… I also just didn’t care about anything else except my LO so I’d have to
remind myself to eat… It’s getting more normal now!
@Serpica hope you hear back ASAP and that it's nothing! It's so nervewracking anytime they do anything to them, even if it's just a precautionary measure. You start having all kinds of thoughts.
I definitely have to remind myself to eat too.. It's the weirdest thing to me. But hopefully like you it'll start to turn around.
Lurking - 37 weeks pregnant....My DD was a week over and so she was very scaly when she was born and the hospital gave us Aquaphore lotion. I also agree that when they are tiny their nails are not hardened and so we just bit them off, clippers just ripped them down lower than I thought was appropriate.
Tonight is turning out to be incredibly stressful. I was going through my app and realized she only had one wet diaper and one poopy diaper. I called the pediatrician who said it sounds like she isn't getting enough to eat. I have been feeding her non stop today so I burst into tears. I was told to monitor her closely tonight and see a consultant in the morning. I need to feed her for 15 minutes on each side every 2 hours. No longer than that (she is using me for comfort apparently). And then I need to pump and feed her with an eyedropper. I'm supposed to call periodically to update them on how it is going and if she produces any wet diapers. I feel like my milk is coming in which could solve the problem, but for now this is going to be a really really long night.
@shaylalr I'm sorry! That's so frustrating, but I'm sure you are doing all you can do and that's all you can do! I bet once your milk comes in all the way it will be better! I'm kind of in the same boat, waiting for my supply to be enough for him to gain what they want him to! Does your LO spit up a lot after feeding? Mine started doing that today when I had actual milk rather than colostrum and when the pediatrician saw us for our first appointment this afternoon he said it was common reflux and just to feed him more upright and hold him upright for 10 min after a feed so it goes to his belly and not back up. He thought that would help with our weight gain issue.
I was a bit irritated though when his doc immediately jumped to suggesting I start supplementing with formula because he'd lost weight. My milk just came in today, I want to give it time! He's eating fine and we're getting a rhythm, I just didn't have much for him to eat right away which I thought was pretty much the expectation. Obviously I don't want to put my child at risk, but it's only day 4 and I don't want to do formula unless absolutely necessary. Ugh. Makes me feel like I'm already doing things wrong. But I'm just going to hold out until his weight check later this week and hopefully we can get it up without supplementing...

@shaylalr I wouldn't be too worried yet if I were you! The hospital wouldn't have discharged you and lo if he had lost too much weight! If it makes you feel better pump and give it to her in a bottle! Ds wasn't gaining weight when I brought him home and I started doing that a couple times a day just to give myself reassurance that he is eating! Made me feel better, he ate like a champ and we've had no nipple confusion! You've got this mama!
@winnie1122 that's pretty ridiculous they would already suggest formula. My lo at 2 weeks still hasn't returned to birth weight and my ped said he's just a slow gainer. As long as he's not super fussy, has plenty of pees and poops then he's good! Ds spit up a lot after feeds. He did have reflux. I would feed him holding him football style with his head propped above his belly then keep him upright after feeds for a bit. That's when I got a rnp for him to sleep in also so he wouldn't be flat.
Anyone have an overactive letdown? I think I do on my left side. During feeds lo has a hard time latching on my left, and sputters and coughs and sometimes he just spits out mouthfuls of milk! i looked it up tonight and I think that's what's going on. Any suggestions how to battle this? My left side was my dud boob with ds so I'm surprised by the change this time!
@rakel88, I'm insanely hungry. It was this way with my first too, but I had forgotten how much I ate with him. I pretty much want to eat all day long. I have a big bowl of Cheerios every single late night/early morning just to make it through the night. Last time, I ate trail mix all throughout the day. This time, trail mix has been upsetting my stomach, so it's "real" food for me.
She ended up having one wet diaper last night. I have an appointment at 2 and hopefully we can figure out what is happening! I am honestly pumping nothing. Maybe 3 drops?? I'm not sure if it is because I fed her already and she emptied me, or I have a horrible supply.
@winnie1122 she doesn't spit up anything! She did in the hospital but not since we have come home. I totally get you on feeling like I'm doing things wrong! You got this. I really hope the weigh in shows progress!!! I don't want to use formula either if I can help it
I was in the same boat @shaylair . My milk took longer to come in so baby lost 15% of his birth weight in 5 days and the ped recommended supplementing with formula. I was not happy about this but decided to go forward with it. I ended up supplementing with formula for 3 days and starting to use the electric pump. It was a slow start but now my supply is up and I haven't had to use formula, I'm just supplementing with breastmilk now. He has most recently gained 10 ounces in 5 days which the ped was impressed with! That said, do whatever you need to do and what's comfortable to you. Honestly, I think I could've resisted the formula but I would have been more anxious doing so. Don't worry, the poos and pees will come and you will be so excitrd about it! I would also recommend watching a Stanford university video on pumping, if that's what you choose to do. I believe using the pump, hand expression and breast massage has increased my output. Can't figure out how to put the link from my phone but just google Stanford university breastfeeding and maximizing milk production. Good luck!
C-section mamas- how is your pain? I am 6 days out and still taking ibuprofen and Tylenol. I can't remember how long I took them with DD. I have no pain when sitting just occasionally when I first get up or I walk up the stairs.
@holly142 I am 5 days out of a c-section and still have pain when standing up and moving too much. I'm taking the ibuprofen every 6 hours and will usually only take a Percocet in the morning and at nighttime. My doctor kept saying to keep moving and that will help with the healing.
My question is - when will I poop? It's been 6 days since my last poop and 5 days since my c-section. I have gas every day and feel a little like I could poop a few times a day but know not to force anything out. I really want to get it over with and think it will help my stomach to feel better but am not sure what to do. How long is too long to go without pooping? I'm taking the Colace twice a day and a probiotic once a day. I eat a healthy diet with lots of water and fiber...so I'm just waiting at this point.
@shaylair I know it's hard not to totally freak out but I am sure things will really change in the next day or so when your milk is fully in. We had the same rough slow start and too much information from everyone made it worse for me emotionally. Keep up the good work mama and trust your gut with your little one. @holly142 I had pain for about 10 days. Once I took off my steri-strips at day 7 it made a world of difference. I stopped using oxy (5mg so barely anything) at like day 5 and just went with Tylenol until about day 10. Moving around made the biggest difference, looks like you're on the right path. @jlmartinez517 I think I finally pooped at day 5 after my c-section with last poop being the day before that. It really wasn't so bad because I didn't force it until my body was ready. The stool softener helped. My doctor said not to freak out, is common for it to take up to a week after c-section.

I took oxy's for about 2 weeks for the pain. Then I switched to ibuprofen or Tylenol for a couple weeks. I think it may depend on how they cut you since it seems like I needed pain meds for longer than most... Or I'm just a wimp.
@holly142 I am on day 5 after C-section and still taking my pain meds. There have been times where I felt like I went overbaord moving too much but everyday my mobility increases. The worst is if I've been sitting or laying down for too long as I get pretty stiff afterwards.
@jlmartinez517 I fortunately had a BM on day 3, a few hours before I was discharged from the hospital. I'm back to feeling like I need to again but anxiously waiting for that happen. I'm just trying to drink lots of water and taking my stool softeners.

@MamaBish 90% of the reason I stopped taking them was the damn constipation! I am on a iron supplement too and that with the prenatal was bad enough... Otherwise I probably would have used up the whole bottle. No reason to be uncomfortable in the least.
@jlmartinez517 I didn't have a C-section but last time I bought an industrial-size bottle of apple juice and just guzzled it along with stool softeners. That seemed to help with the first BM. After the first one it wasn't so bad anymore.
@shaylalr we had a similar problem here, day 4 he didn't poop at all and I was starting to get really worried but my milk hadn't really come in yet. It came in the next day and he instantly became a poop machine and started gaining weight. We saw the pediatrician yesterday and talked about it and she said that can happen if there isn't any milk yet.
They squeezed us in for an appointment at 9am because they were concerned. Turns out she wasn't really getting anything at all. Her sucks were unproductive. I had gotten some bad advice in the hospital about how her latch should look, and now that I know what to look for there is a huge difference between her sucking and actually swallowing. My milk is coming in for sure she said which is helping. She gave me some tips for engorgment as well, which is why my pumping has been unsuccessful. I also have a plugged duct which was complicating things so I need to work on getting that solved. We have a lot of work to do but the lactation consultant said we should be totally fine!

I'm 11 days pp and pretty much pain free. I have what feels like bruising right above my incision and get a little cramping every so often but am moving around fine. I stopped taking my pain meds the day after I got home, so 4 days pp.
@jlmartinez517 I was super scared to poop but when I kinda felt like I had to go, I just went and sat on the toilet for a while.. Just sitting there kinda relaxed everything and it happened.
