Re: Stupid Questions Sunday 7.3

  • Any other runners not running this pregnancy? I'm taking it off because of an injury (to my posterior tibial tendon) that I can't seem to get rid of. I've vowed not to run until I'm back to pre-pregnancy weight because a few extra pounds actually make a huge difference. However, it's killing me. I hate not running. So... my question is - how are you dealing with it? (Or I guess anyone taking a break from pre-pregnancy passions)

I'm doing the elliptical and in theory will start swimming laps but it doesn't replace what running does for me. Watching people sprint their hearts out in the olympic trials is making me want to sob.

  • @slartybartfast I am also not running. :( My time immediately took a hit, which was fine...until the breathlessness and sciatica ramped up. Then running was simply not comfortable...more like ouch ouch ouchies.

But I do keep moving and active. Lots of walking, squats, dumbbells for my arms, and a lot of swimming. I've noticed my body doesn't make much progress in terms of building muscle anymore, but that will likely go away once baby gets here. I'm giving myself a lot of grace and just making sure I'm rested, comfortable, and healthy above all else.
  • I've totally bailed on the gym since getting pregnant.  If we go, I get hungry halfway through and have to leave (the hunger quickly turns to dizziness).  It doesn't help that I've also been working late and don't have the energy to go to the gym after work.

I'm trying to find some workout DVDs I can do at home (maybe prenatal yoga?).

My question is - what are you guys doing for headaches when Tylenol doesn't work?  Any ideas?
  • @slartybartfast I have quit riding horses. I just can't work my hips and abs well enough that I feel comfortable above a walk. I have found that I personally just need to stay away from horses right now, or I get the sads.

@penelope4612 I will get on the counter/in the tub with a warm wet washcloth on the back of my neck, and run hot water over my feet. That for me has worked when Tylenol and caffein haven't cut it. This doesn't get rid of it completely, but I can function again.

  • I'm still running so far this pregnancy. Last pregnancy I wasn't allowed to run and it was tough. I ended up walking a lot! This time I was determined to keep running. But by running I mean I'll go on a 3 mile walk/run and run for .25 to .5 miles at a time then walk. So it's not straight running or I get major cramps and pelvic floor pain. I did just order a support belt to see if that will help.

However, at my appt on Friday I hadn't gained any weight (17 weeks) at all this pregnancy and the Dr said if I don't show some gain by next time then I'll have to cut back on exercise. The first thing to go will be the run/walks to be changed into slower walking. I'm not ready for that.

  • @slartybartfast I've been doing women's-only fitness classes since my BFP, but now that I'm back home for a month I'm going to try running. I've never been a great runner, and I've definitely slowed even more with the babe. I second the weight training though! I'm probably going to get a punch pass to my college's gym and do some lifting while I'm here too.

@Kate08Young I quit riding too for the time being!! I did it starting at bfp  (this is our last chance from ivf) and I just can't risk a fall... it sucks so bad. I originally planned to still hang at the barn but my work schedule changed some etc and now I think it will just make me sad...but I might still give it a go....

@penelope4612 a heated rice pack to the forehead. You can buy them on Amazon (here is the one I have: Earth Therapeutics Mind/Body Therapy Anti-Stress Sinus Pillow https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000MUFJXQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_3.NExbTKFK5AB). Heat it for about 30 seconds in the microwave. Can also be made cool by freezing a bit in a freezer bag. Repeat as needed. It really helps me a lot!
Also don't be afraid of a spot of caffeine. I go to it before trying Tylenol and usually can avoid a pill altogether.

  • @penelope4612 My headaches got way better after I started taking a magnesium supplement. I hadn't realized that there wasn't any in my prenatal. I'd check with your doc and check what's in your prenatal before starting it, but I read 250 mg is good in pregnancy, and it really helped my neck pain and headaches that were getting pretty hard to handle.
  • My doc also recommended a (200-250 mg) magnesium citrate supplement for headaches and constipation during pregnancy.

  • So my question: anyone else feel movement early and then nothing really since? I had one dat at 15w2d where baby was just going nuts! Now 17w4d and haven't really felt much since. It's been 4.5 yrs but I don't remember having a lull in movement with my first. u/s on Thurs so at least I'll know if things are ok then but still nervous!

Me! I'm a FTM though, so it's possible it wasn't actually movement for me the first time. I was pretty confident though. I have a OB appointment ttomorrow, and am really looking forward to hearing the heart beat because of it.
  • This early on the movement is definitely hit or miss. I have days where the kid won't quit then go for a few in between.

QUESTION: so I had my anatomy scan today at 18+4....and I asked about the gender because we planned a reveal BBq for THIS Saturday...I assumed they wouldn't book me so early that they couldn't tell but the tech was grumbling about it being so early to tell because the baby is "so small". After a lot of looking, at the end she told DH and I that she is now 80% sure it's a GIRL!!! At first I didn't care about that 20%...but now I'm wondering...should I cancel the bbq? or just go ahead with a disclaimer of not telling anyone not present until we confirm at 20 weeks? I feel like its too late to cancel it.

  • You can say 80% it's a girl...but tell ppl not to go pink crazy until it's confirmed in a few weeks. I have had friends who were told girl much later than 19 weeks (like 30+) who gave birth to a boy. But I think it's rare. Are you getting another scan at 20 weeks?

That's tough @r0824h Was the purpose of the bbq the reveal? Like guests are expecting it? Otherwise, you could still just have a bbq. 80% is pretty high, you're probably safe, but it would be a lot more comforting if the tech wasn't as grumbly about it.

Do you have any 3D ultrasound/boutique places by you? I know the ones I see have you go in after 17 weeks for sex. It costs about $100 from what I've heard. You could try to fit in one of those?

Also, are you sure you're having another ultrasound at 20 weeks? It was my impression from my doctor that the anatomy scan would be the last one for awhile.
  • R0824HR0824H member
@sourlemon and @cgss11 yes I need to get another US in about 2-3 weeks because they couldn't get all the measurements they needed. I get they could always have a chance of being wrong lol but she went from no way of telling to 80% and that's a little concerning, I looked into a 3d place around here but they won't tell gender until 20 weeks...:|

  • @R0824H - that's super frustrating.  I had something similar happen at my NT scan (the tech was super annoyed when I told her how far I was and was like "well that's the earliest POSSIBLE that I can do this so we'll see, you may need to come back".  I'm like, ok well your front desk booked it based on my EDD, maybe let them know?

I'm going tomorrow at 18w 5d.  The Dr told me between 18-20 weeks but the front desk insisted on booking me in my 18th week so we'll see how it goes I guess.

For the gender reveal, what were you planning?  If you were going to do pink or blue, maybe you could do purple and tell people you THINK it's a girl?  And then stress that you're only 80% sure?  Or just have tha BBQ without the reveal if people aren't expecting it.
  • @R0824H - how was baby measuring against your due date?  I find your U/S techs response weird.  Anatomy scans are done between 18-20 weeks gestation as a rule.  That doesn't make your baby 'small' unless baby is measuring small.  Any chance you can request a different tech next appt?  Sounds she might be either immature or inept.

My u/s says 18+1 so I guess it's 3 days behind? but it shouldn't be THAT much of a difference I wouldn't think. She was a pretty young tech...also had the perma-bitch face on too...although she was very chatty during the measurements. I told her that it was the other tech that booked the date, so it wasn't my fault I was so early. *sigh* it seems like you get a lot more information in the USA (and nicer people) than here :/

  • +1 to @DiFazette's statement. Your tech isn't acting like a well trained tech. Most techs can tell or give a +80% guess at about 16 weeks. So unless your tech is super lazy or unskilled you should be fine.

  • Some techs have "ways" to tell I guess. He explained it to me but not sure I could explain it without a picture. I was told 80% girl at 11 weeks, so I've put that disclaimer to and have showed hesitation to everyone who has inquired so they know how iffy it is. DH went crazy and told his family so now I have to backpedal all of his family members when they talk to me. We will know for sure at the end of July.
  • Niaouli essential oil on temples or nap of neck is also very helpful for head aches... And staying hydrated... And pooping.

I use the Digestive Advantage constipation formula, works like a charm.  It takes a day or two, but if you take a couple pills in a row, usually it works (really, REALLY well) fairly soon.  I've switched to taking it every other day because it was working a bit too well.  ;)

Totally normal and happening to me too. Your nips get bigger and the skin expands, plus your nips are like any other skin and shed and flake. Additionally you are probably already producing colostrum so that dries out and gets stuck in there. I exfoliate gently with a washcloth in the shower and use a nipple cream (only doing this because they are so super itchy).
