Re: Weekly Randoms 7/4

  • Anyone doing a baby book for their LO? I was so proud I brought mine to my delivery and remembered to have them do footprints in it when they were doing them for her birth certificate. The nurse laughed at me when she saw I hadn't filled anything out yet, and said, "you're never going to do this!" So now I'm determined to get it all in, but there's spaces for all this stuff I didn't keep track of like first time we heard a heartbeat and when we felt the first kick. I'm thinking maybe I can dig through my comments on threads in here and get answers from those, but it's too hard on the mobile app so going to try later in my computer. Did you guys actually track all that stuff from the start? I normally would just let it go but when I was a kid I LOVED reading my baby book, so I want Sierra to have a good one too!

  • I have a journal I wrote through all through pregnancy and plan on writing in it when she has a big developmental milestone and then every year on her birthday, then give it to her once she's older. My mom reminded me though how much I loved looking at my baby book as a kid so I'll probably get one and fill it in so that she can easily look at it

I filled out the belly book for both kids.

Then I have a box for their misc. stuff along with a baby book for one, first year journal for another, and birthday book for both (to write in each year starting at age 1).

It was hard to make the time but some nights after everyone is in bed I make tea (rarely ever have caffeine) and write until my hand hurts :)
I jot down notes in my phone and then when the time comes transfer them to the paper for whatever book I am working on for each kid.

Toddler is almost all caught up.  There was a time during my pregnancy where I totally slacked for some months because I just felt really awful.

I am still not caught up for baby #2 but trying - a bit over 1/2 way. I foresee a tea night in the future soon. Or if DH has the toddler on an outing during the weekend I take that opportunity to write (now baby is a factor, so if baby naps and DH has toddler on an outing and I also don't nap or eat then I write :) )

I have worked more on these books and journals than I ever did even on my thesis. So I am hoping a tornado doesn't blow them away or a house fire or something because I would be pretty pissed off at that.

But it is really important to me to write these things down because my mom passed away and we were super close. Seeing her handwriting and hearing my early childhood experiences through her own words in my baby book is really great to have.
  • I did a photobook for DS1 and wrote something for each month...I have yet to write something more than joted notes for DS2. I should really get on that.
  • These are all cool ideas - I always liked the idea of journaling for the kid, but I felt so gross and exhausted for most of my pregnancy and wiped out now, probably never gonna happen!
  • Alex is obsessed with a mirror in our lounge. If he can't see it he throws a hissy fit. Anyone else's LO's being totally weird like that?
  • When you travel by plane and rent a car... How do I handle car seat, etc? Also, do I get carry on bags for infant if he doesn't have a seat assignment?

@AliciaD39 buy a bag for the car seat and gate check it and your stroller if you're bringing one. You can check it there easily and they supposedly handle the gate checked items more carefully. I read somewhere once that gate check prevents damage to the structure of the seat equivalent to an accident and since you can't see how it's been handled there could be underlying damage.

I've rented a car with a convertible car seat once and wouldn't personally do it again. The seat was only front facing and he was under 2, so that didn't work and they weren't able to help me install it legally so it was more stress than lugging our own seat. We have a wheel cart for our convertible so it's not terrible.

I don't know about baggage allowance if the infant doesn't have a purchased seat. I would imagine yes because you'll still pay for a lap fare anyway but I've only done it once and we usually just buy a seat. There isn't a limit on liquids though in case you bring breast milk or formula.
  • I'm going to a BBQ tonight and I wanted to look nice. Ezra decided to have an "only mommy will do" day so I started getting ready at 9am. Still have to do my nails and I already changed my shirt once.
  • Today is my birthday so I'm enjoying my day with a baby attached to my boobs! Oh, how times have changed. I had a party on Saturday but it's so hot that I mostly stayed inside with the baby. Hopefully next year will be a little more fun since she'll be more mobile and able to enjoy being outside a little more.
  • We have a baby book and there's a whole page for handprints and footprints, but we never had them done. Oops. Guess there will be an awkward blank page in the book.
  • @PYLWhammy even with all my planning ahead, the hospital didn't do handprints for anything so I have half an empty awkward page since they only did footprints.

I think it depends on your airline. I'm flying American in a couple days and contacted the airline to see what was allowed. Even though Munchkin will be on my lap I am allowed to check her car seat/base and stroller free and she is allowed one carry on bag as well.
  • My baby was up nearly all day the past few days, but slept awesomely at night. Today she's been napping constantly. I fear for tonight...

Ha I got fully ready today and of course LO spit up alllll over my outfit 10 min before we had to walk out the door. From now on I'm staying naked until the last minute.

Yes. This is the winning strategy. Wear crap clothes until just before leaving-- I do it with DS1 too, because if we're wearing party clothes early they will certainly get dirty somehow. And take pictures early in the event before things get too disheveled too if you want guaranteed clean ones.
  • My 5 year old nephew has a blanket that he loves; he drags it everywhere with him and chews on it, etc. Today, he decided that "Micah needed his blanket" and covered him up with it. While it was a sweet gesture, I was cringing internally thinking about how germy that blanket is.

I cringe daily because my baby lives with a toddler.  Also knows as walking germs.

    Worth the watch!
    Germ sacks I tell ya!

My adopted 5 year old BIL makes me nervous around LO. He pets LO's head like a dog and grabs with BOTH hands. Plus, he's alway dirty...

At first it made me cringe more, now I just hope that his older brother is helping to toughen his immune system. I'm sure I'll worry more at whatever point DS1 actually has a cold of some sort. We went through a short phase of DS1 using DS2's head as a napkin/tissue when I'd nurse him during dinner and had no extra hands to fend DS1 off in time and baby came through just fine.   :s

This! So glad this baby will be old enough for a flu shot when school starts!

Update: he peed on my second outfit but my thought was "these are my GOOD shorts. It'll dry".
count me in on staying naked until we're out the door!
Yep, fully ready for work and DS pooped all over me, right out the side of the diaper. Giant heaps of poop, it was such a mess. So I am thinking ok no big deal I will just change my pants. NOPE, DS decides to pee on me while I was trying to clean said mess. WHOLE NEW OUTFIT later. I swear when it rains it pours!

I don't know where to put this so here goes. I've been trying to be positive and sunshiney about my body image, but I loathe my body right now and it's making me feel awful (read:depressed). I'm tired and when I'm tired I like to eat all of the carbs. And since I'm tired all of the time, it's been bad. I'm trying you guys, but I feel so unlike myself and not healthy at all. :/ Tell me I'm not alone.

Eta: I'm also feeling anxiety when I have to be around family or friends. I'm 6 weeks PP and I know people are understanding that I recently had a baby but I feel like all eyes are on my flab.  Nothing fits and my wardrobe is so limited by nursing friendly clothing. Gah.
  • @Jenly17 You are not alone! We have a group on FB, you should join if you are keen? @MsIan should be able to tell you more and add you!
  • @Jenly17 I totally understand. One of my friends had her baby 10 days before DS and she's already wearing her shorts again and tight fitting shirts, and she doesn't look flabby. While I'm over here barely fitting into my "fat shorts". I have a feeling I'll be wearing my maternity jeans once I go back to work. Which is so depressing. Any motivation to work out is voided by lack of sleep from MOTN nursing and anxiety.

Yes. This is the problem. I know it takes time and I'm trying to be patient, but it's starting to affect me mentally.

I am so with you! You are definitely not alone on body image. My mom keeps reminding me six months! You need six months for your body to feel normal again. What's helping me is getting dressed in not skin tight stuff every day. If I'm dressed kindof okay I can imagine my body looking nicer than usual.

I second the Take Pics Early in the party.  We got to my in-laws for a Grad party.  My FIL took a pic of DH and I with baby Clara.  I said, "why don't we get a pic of all 5 of us - with the twins."  Well, the twins had already soaked their dresses, but were having a blast at the water table set up outside for all the little ones.  I had backup clothes, but the family picture never happened.

Yes.  My toddlers touch their privates, pick their noses, and then poke baby in the eye!  Gross.  but totally unpreventable.

Also, just remember that when you're tired. Your body wants all the carbs and sugar to keep
running. I think eating healthier is step 1 to actually getting back to where I was.

I am with you on the limited wardrobe!  I like to wear a nursing tank and a light overshirt, but none of my "nice" shorts fit.  So athletic shorts it is . . . all summer :)
I don't want to buy bigger clothes because I'd like to be slimmer, eventually, but permanently.

  • I spilled my ice coffee on my face and grabbed the towel next to me to wipe off... Then I realized that was the same towel I used to dry the pee on my couch from my potty training toddler. :disappointed:

  • Speaking of body image. I got excited this morning because I fit my pre-pregnancy leggings (I've been wearing maternity leggings). I felt great until I ripped the ass seam while bending over at the mall. How the hell did I rip stretchy pants? Good ghing that store sold leggings. Now time to go home and do squats.

You read my mind! I had this exact post all written out but never posted it. I'm so depressed about my body. Nothing fits. I'm working out, trying to do a little dieting but then I worry about my milk supply. At this point I don't know what to do. On top of it all I'm reading everyone on here talking about how they are already back to their pre pregnancy weight, and my mom saying it only took her two weeks to get back in her jeans. I'm 7 weeks pp today and I cried while looking in the mirror this morning. Sorry this isn't an encouraging response, just glad I'm not the only one going through this self image hate.
