When's your last day of work?

Re: When's your last day of work?

  • I'm working 3 days a weeks/15 hours a week and will put in my 2 week notice this coming Monday.  My last day will be July 8.

I'm on my feet at work and I do like that it helps keep me active but, I'm feeling more and more exhausted after each shift so I'm ready to be nesting at home.

I picked this date because my coworkers are throwing me a little party on July 6 so decided to make that my last week - or else I would have put in my notice already!! I'll be a SAHM once baby arrives and I'm so happy I don't have to deal with the technicalities of leave - that gives me anxiety just thinking about it!!

  • When I go into labor :( I wish I could have more time off before because I am on my feet all day long for my job. Maybe it will help me go into labor on time or a wee bit sooner?

  • I live in NJ but the 4 weeks prior to delivery that @SkiChic626 is referring to is only partially-paid disability, so I wanted to get my full payment as long as possible.  I picked July 15th because I will have enough PTO days to cover me until my EDD, and probably a few extra.  If I go super late then I'll have to have disability cover me for a couple of days but that's ok.  I do agree though that NJ is one of the best states as far as benefits... our country has a long way to go in this department!

My 4 weeks prior are 100% paid disability.  My first day of disability will actually be July 8th, but I'm using a couple personal days before that since I'll lose them if I don't.  It likely depends on your company's insurance policy, but FMLA also kicks in at that point, as well, so that your job is protected.  That's where the NJFLA is nice because you don't have to worry about burning up any FMLA to go out before.  Though, I've heard rumors that NJ may be doing away with the NJFLA, which would really be horrible - it's such a great benefit.  Just another thing to push people a little more to move out of this state.  Our taxes are so astronomical here, they need to give SOMETHING back and not take more away.  I already don't qualify for the homestead rebate anymore, what's next...such bull crap.

  • When my water breaks! Hopefully that won't happen at the office, but we shall see. I am using my water breaking last go round as an excuse to hopefully be able to work from home two days prior to my due date. My company is too small for FMLA, has no paid leave, and my sick days are gone with all these doctor appointments. I'm saving every last minute of vacation time to use for after birth.

  • I will be working up until I go into labor. I am closer to the hospital at work, literally only 2 mins, than my house. Plus I only have my 2 weeks vacation and a couple of sick days to use during my FMLA, so I would prefer to keep them until after he is born. Probably only going to take 6 weeks off unless something crazy happens.
  • Plan on working until i go to labor and i will have the flexibility to work from home whenever i want as well so i will be doing that alot.
  • I'm due on August 29 (a Monday), so I plan to work until August 26, which is the previous Friday.  I may work from home a bit after that date, but I'm not making any promises to my employer in that regard.  I can technically take a year of leave, but am only taking 18 weeks, so I'm not overly stressed about leaving work and then using up my maternity leave waiting around for baby to arrive.

  • YESTERDAY.

Ugh, I wish. Whenever it's go time but I am so checked out lately it's not even funny. I can see why some just change their minds and never come back. Tempting, so tempting. I'm in this ultra nesting mode (more so mentally than physically) that my head is not in work mode. Ahhhh!

With DD I totally thought I wasn't going to want to come back, and I hated my job back then.  When she was about 2 months old I got sooooo stir crazy, I couldn't wait to get back to work and use my brain again.  I literally felt like I was getting dumber and dumber by the day - I couldn't even speak in full sentences lol.  I've since been promoted into a different role and I love my job now, but there's so much external stuff going on with getting ready for the baby and summer vacation that I'm beyond checked out at this point and ready to be on leave.  I could never be a SAHM, though.

  • I plan to work up until 37 or 38 weeks.  I actually asked my doctor about it because of my ridiculous commute to work.  She said she would recommend going out on leave at that time.  My hospital is a good hour drive from my employer.  I live closer to the hospital so would feel more comfortable being nearby in case something happened.  I'll still have 12 weeks of fmla and paid maternity leave after baby is born. Fortunately, my employer has a generous mat leave policy.

I am working until the day I deliver. I wish I had enough leave to actually quit now lol two months before the baby is here and mentally I spend very little time working... Plus its summer at the university and a lot slower than normal...
  • My last day will be August 19, if I don't go into labor before then.  My due date is August 25.  This is my second baby and with my first I planned on working until I went into labor.  With my first, I had an OB appointment on a Thursday and they were concerned about swelling and a jump in my already high BP, so they ordered a 24 hour urine to be turned into the hospital on Friday and to come in first thing Monday morning.  It turned out that I had preeclampsia so I was induced Monday morning.

With this one, I originally wanted to work until I go into labor, but with our DD being so young (she will be 17 months when baby comes) and because we live about 40 minutes from the hospital, I decided to try to take a few days off beforehand just to feel like I might have some control over the situation.  Also, with my job it's easier on everyone if I have a set day off rather than spontaneously not coming back like last time (which could still happen, I know).

My office is too small for FMLA, but my employers are letting me take 12 weeks.  They will pay for 2 weeks, I have 3 weeks of vacation, and 1 week of personal/sick time.  My sick time has already been used between a couple of sick days with DD and my appointments, but I have all of my vacation left.  I also have STD that will cover 6 weeks for vaginal and 8 weeks for c-section at 60% I think.  So I will only lose 1 full week of pay.

  • @SkiChic626 - Is any of that paid?  I just found out today we have FMLA for up to 12 weeks (but OB usually says 6-8 weeks).  We have a state law to protect for up to 6 months, but again only if medically necessary.  Whats the point of family leave protection if "bonding" doesn't count as medically necessary!   So I'm frustrated today.....

  • We only get fmla for 6 weeks regular birth or 8 weeks with c section...don't get any extra time off before baby arrives unless we use pto or vacation time...which I've been using toward my doc appointments. So I plan on working right up until unless something comes up I plan on using vacation time first then fmla...nys stinks when it comes to fmla
How is that possible??  FMLA is 12 weeks, your company doesn't dictate that, the government does.
Thats not true @SkiChic626 - FMLA PROTECTS your job for up to 12 weeks.  But a physician can determine when you are physically able to return to work.  Most OB say that after 6 weeks from a vaginal delivery and after 8 weeks from a C/S a mother is physically able to return to work.  For us, FMLA doesn't even pay a dime.  It just offers protection and any time off is PTO/Sick Leave.

  • I SAH with DS now, but when I was pregnant with him, I worked until I had him. I'm so glad I did, too, since I went two weeks late. I'd have wasted two weeks of my leave otherwise.

Also, I'd have been bored as heck at home. Nursery was finished at 38 weeks and I wouldn't have had anything to do. Work was an excellent distraction.

The only annoying thing about working until baby comes is everyone, seriously everyone, making comments about why you're still at work or where the baby is, etc.

  • A physician may be able to ok you to return to work after 6 or 8 weeks, but FMLA entitles qualified employees to up to 12 weeks of leave but it is unpaid.  Your employer is allowed the option to require you to use paid leave concurrently with FMLA leave. Here is a link to the fact sheet which gives a sort of clear idea of what FMLA is and isn't. https://www.dol.gov/whd/regs/compliance/whdfs28.pdf

  • ThisisNumber3 Yes, that's correct, FMLA does not pay you, it just protects your job, hence what I meant when I said that's the government dictated portion.  As @mmclark10 said, it entitles you to 12 week of leave, but may be unpaid.  The disability of 6 or 8 weeks that your doctor approves is separate - if you get paid for that it's either your company is awesome or more likely it's short-term disability, which typically runs concurrent with FMLA.  Once your disability is up, you can still take those additional 6 or 4 weeks unpaid and your job will be protected.  So in your examples, even though your OB will only approve 6 or 8 weeks of disability, which is pretty standard, you're still eligible to take the full 12 weeks, just some of it will be unpaid.  The point of the leave is that your job is protected even though you're not being paid.

To answer your first question, for me, any time that I take before baby will be paid - some of it I'll use my personal days and vacation days that I'll lose anyway since I'm not returning until 2017 and then my company automatically gives 2 weeks of STD pay BEFORE baby's birth, and then 8 weeks after baby will be paid 100% by STD.  In NJ, the law allows you to take 4 weeks before you due date and have your job protected.  It does cut into FMLA, but since we also get NJFLA, it doesn't impact how much time you have after baby at all unless you go way past you EDD.  My company then gives one week of parental leave at 100% pay - so I'll get 9 weeks of full pay after baby and about a month before.  Once my NJFLA kicks in for baby bonding time (12 weeks), I'll be able to apply for NJ disability insurance to run concurrent with that, which will pay me about $550/week (not sure of the exact amount for 2016, but that's about what it was in 2014) for 6 of those 12 weeks.  It's nowhere near full pay for me, but at least it's a little something to continue to help with bills and such until I return to work.  I'll probably have 3 or 4 weeks that are completely unpaid, but I just got my bonus for this year, so we're squirreling some of that away to cover that month of no pay, which is also what we did last time and it worked out.

  • I work until I go into labor. If I don't work the day before I deliver they don't have to pay me the 6 weeks of disability pay. I'll be taking that and then 6 weeks of FMLA unpaid after that. Only 9 weeks and some change left until I can hope to be done for awhile.

What if you needed to be on bed rest for some reason beforehand?  Do they really want you breaking you water while you're at work?  They won't pay you your disability if you're not working the day before the baby is born??  That sounds fishy....

  • I worked up until I was in labor with DD1. Well acctually I was at work in labor for about 6 hours. I left when I started getting uncomfortable (plus DH was already home waiting for me freaking out). I was still able to drive home on my own.
I plan on doing the same this time but my brain has already checked out and I still have 7 more weeks until my due date.
  • @tinkerbell11210 OMG you were in labor at work and kept working???? Good for you, girl, I can't even touch that kind of dedication with a 10 foot pole!

  • @SkiChic626. I was acctually being told by co workers to go home but I really wasn't in pain so I figured why not stay. My contractions were close together, just not painful.
I had a huge fear of going into L&D and being sent home. I didn't want to be that person.
However. When I finally did go to L&D around 3 or 4 that same day. I was sent home since I wasn't in enough pain and not even at a 1 yet. The nurse said I was too happy. Well we went home I walked into our house and my water broke. We went right back to the hospital and the same nurse was there. she took one look at me and told them to give me a room. I guess I didn't look happy the second time around.
  • Waiting until LO gets here, otherwise I have to use vacation days I would rather throw on the back end of my maternity leave.
  • @SkiChic626 if I have to go on bedrest that would be covered under FMLA before I have babes. It's all different paperwork stuff I need to fill out. I won't collect any type of disability pay before I have her. I have to work up until I have her, take vacation the day before I have her, or have FMLA coverage due to medical issues.

  • I'm also a teacher but on a January to November school year. Luckily the way our holidays fall we've got the first 3 weeks of August off and then I'm due the following week. So I'll likely be finishing up end of July. I've got 2 months paid Maternity leave then and I'll probably take the last 3-4 weeks of the school year unpaid so it's worked out very well timing wise.

Then come early December, we pack up, leave Asia and move home! Big changes ahead.
