I'm curious about power pumping- my supply is fine but I want to increase it so I can start a really strong stash/ feel better about slacker boob. How long do you do the rhythm for? Is it just 20-10-10-10? Then how long do you wait till starting again?
Recommended once a day:) 20 on, 10 off, 10 on, 10 off, 10 on and then done. It's supposed to mimic cluster feeding.
This is sorta related to pumping... When you go out and have bottles milk with you do you warm it in a portable warmer or give it room temp? Also... Do you all have chilly bags when you go out or just only go out for 4 hour or less outings and dump any milk you didn't use? I'm really not sure how to go about giving her a bottle while out.

I typically will just put it in her diaper bag since we aren't usually gone for more than a few hours and if she doesn't drink it I'll put it back in the fridge when we get home

It's super hot here at times so we give her cold breast milk sometimes. When we're out I just give her the bottle at whatever temp it is. Although we keep it in a specific part of our bag that includes an ice pack.

This is what I do, too. We actually don't even have a bottle warmer at home. He's okay with drinking cold/lukewarm milk.
My pumping success is so dependent on not being stressed out. I stupidly tried to pump this morning after feeding the baby. Righty was engorged, so I figured it would shoot out similar to when I use my manual pump. I didn't make my coffee or anything, I went straight to the pump, nervous baby would start crying. She did. So she's crying, my husband is telling me he needs to go to work, my dog is trying to climb on top of me, and I lost. my shit. Nothing was coming out. Husband left, and I took a deep breath. I took the baby to the nursery to rock, and she fell asleep. Came back downstairs, made my coffee, tried to pump again, and I'm almost at 4 ounces right now. Pumping at work is going to be so awesome. I'm type-A and just a high-strung person in general. Throw in a financial cycle at work, and I don't know how I'm going to get any milk.
My PISA makes my nipple hurt so bad. I have the correct fitting shield based on what I've read, and I don't crank it up to max. My right nipple is super sensitive (it's the one I got the milk blister on - what is up with all of our right boobs?!). Does anyone rent a Medela Symphony? I've been reading it's much more gentle than the PISA.
@missnc77 I'm renting the Symphony right now, but I can't compare it to the PISA as I've never used that. I will say that I've found the symphony to be brutal on my poor nipples, though that may be in part due to poor fit of the shield (I'm not sure). My other pump (Lansinoh) is so much nicer on my nipples.
@missnc77 it may sound odd, but have you tried oiling with coconut oil or olive oil before pumping? When I pumped a ton with DS1, that always helped my comfort level. I hear you on the work stress. I couldn't grade shitty papers and pump because it would freeze me up. If you have flexible timing with tasks, save the ones that make you feel productive/accomplished for when you pump. Or play videos/audio of your baby to help stimulate a letdown. You'll figure out what works for you!
Edited because my phone is censoring my profanity. No, phone. I don't mean shirty or ducking. Ever.
This may have come up but I don't want to go back. Has anyone used Freemies? If so, how do you like them?Any major pros or cons I should consider before getting them?
Any suggestions? I go back to work in 6 weeks. I pump 6 times a day right now for 25 mins. when I go back I get 2 fifteen minute breaks and half hour lunch. I wondering how to get down to the pumping time of 15 mins for my breaks. Also by the time i go back I plan to try to be down to 5ppd.

Most states require an additional 10 minute "pumping" break for all returning moms, so you can add that to your breaks too.

Pump just before/just after work if you can to get your 5. With the short time allotment, relax, work that letdown button, use a strapless zip-on hands free bra that you can throw on over your clothes, and do breast compressions. Refrigerate everything that the milk touches so you don't have to waste time washing. Just wash when you finish pumping for the day.
Just curious if anyone else here gets a total "ick" feeling while pumping? The second I turn the pump on until the second it stops, I just feel blah and bummed out. I wouldn't say depressed, but just kind of a sense of drained yuckiness, if that makes any sense??? It's so weird. I EP, so I'm not sure if it would feel the same to BF. I'm fine between pumps but kind of dread each pump session now. It extra sucks when I only have time to eat while I'm pumping and I just can't enjoy my food at all.
Happy Sunday. Hooked up to my pump, coffee in hand, laptop, and I thought I'd be smart and grab my wallet. I'm wondering if online shopping will stimulate and relax me to get out maximum milk supply. The money I spend right now is for science.
@missnc77 hope it helped!! I've been getting 4-5 oz of slacker righty lately. We went out for a date night sans baby last night (Twas amazing), I came home to relief pump - got 4 oz total from both. Pumped one side at 330am for relief and got 3 oz while she ate from the other. Then before she woke up to eat again I pumped one side and got over 5 oz! Wtf is going on boobs?!
However, the relief pump I did last night when we got home (4oz - so 2 from each side) is def much lighter in color (looks like a watery white) compared to the ones this morning (creamy white) - I never pump on the evenings so is that why it is that color or is it just straight foremilk and is it still ok to use? My dumb self ended up freezing it in the 4oz increment versus mixing it with the creamier ones...
I only got 1 ounce from each, but she ate out of one before pumping, and I didn't want to drain the other. When she ate after I pumped, she was working HARD to get milk out. I felt so bad.
I always get less and less as the day progresses. It's like they refill at night while I'm asleep. I'm wondering if I'm having a lack of supply lately. It makes me afraid to pump. If I could master the pump and feed at the wee am feedings, I'm sure I'd get a ton, but I want my boobs to make less milk at night and more during the day.
DH is sleeping, LO is sleeping, even the cat is sleeping. I thought about what I could do with all this me time and the first thought was power pumping. I think I need more excitement if this is my first thought of how to spend uninterrupted free time
I apologize if this has been addressed but I didn't have time to go through this whole thread.. My question is when LO goes to daycare next month I have to prepare her bottles the night prior. I have been pumping and freezing but at most I only get maybe 2 oz at a time. When I thaw the bags of milk am I able to combine them? Meaning if I thaw two bags but need to add some from another bag to make each bottles 3 oz am I able to do that even though they were pumped on different days? Hope that makes sense! Anyone have to do this?
@kbrands7 Figured I'd page you you probably could answer this for me.

I think the same thing! "Oh LO's asleep! Better grab the pump" were boring moms now.

You can definitely combine milk! I used to pull the oldest frozen for the first day of each week, then freeze what I pumped on Friday. Often, bags would get combined from different dates. If there was a cold going around the family, I'd purposely mix some of the Friday (new frozen) milk in so that baby got the antibodies I had created, but I still kept my supply rotated in the freezer. Until recently, I slept in DS's room. However, I've just moved back to my bedroom. DH says no way I'm pumping in our room at night, but I keep worrying that I'll wake DS up in the middle of the night. What are you ladies doing?

I'm pumping in my bedroom at night, when I get it in. Why does your DH care, the noise maybe?
@JoMunson The noise, the light (whether overhead or via phone, I can't manage to hook up properly in the dark), and additional stuff in our room (all the pumping supplies and snacks both taking up the bathroom counter and my side of the bed), etc.
I'm hoping he'll cave and realize it's no better for him in the current set up, especially since he gets to listen to me pump via baby monitor currently.
He also wants to do the cry it out sleep method when LO is old enough... I told him that he gets the monitor on his side of the bed if that's the case.
@proudparent2b I've always pumped in our room, my ILs even bought me a fridge so I wouldn't have to go downstairs to store the milk overnight.
Your DH can get over the pump and slight light (I use my phone as a light too). You gotta do what you gotta do. It's already a huge pain in the butt to pump at night anyway but to leave the room too?! I want to pump and go straight back to bed.

Ah I see. Here are my tips: 1. Put the pump on your side of the bed instead of in the bathroom. Have everything hooked up ahead of time so all you have to do is turn it on. 2. I have the medela in style advanced and the noise is reduced if I close the flap that hides the controls. if you do these two things pumping becomes a lot more efficient and less of a hassle. I can see him not wanting to deal with the noise and all the set up while he's asleep. as for crying it out, here's a great quote I read about that method: when you stop responding to your babies cry, you're letting them know not to come to you with their problems. if he still won't budge, have him check out Brazeltons book on sleep. He does a good sleep training that allows the parents to still respond to their babies instead of just letting them cry.
How did you go about thawing frozen milk into bottles for next day to go daycare? I know milk is only good for 24 hours after it's thawed. But I would really dread having to thaw frozen milk overnight and then make bottles early in the morning for daycare. Or is that my only option?

I have only pumped at night a couple of times, one time in our room since I just wanted to go to sleep ASAP, and once in the living room since I was already up watching a movie.
If my DH told me no way was I pumping in our room I would tell him tough s**t. It's not like hooking our boobs up to a weird machine to feed our children is super awesome or convenient for us, I say we get to do it wherever we damn well please.
@proudparent2b I pump on one side while I feed baby on the other, and we do it in the nursery next door to our master bedroom. She sleeps in our room with us, so if I was pumping without her I would still go into the nursery. I'm willing to go out of my way a little to make sure my husband gets good sleep because he functions way better in the morning and lets me sleep in then, if he hasn't been up all night every time I was up. No point in is both being awake when I'm the only one doing stuff.
Uhm...currently pumping while pushing DD back and forth in the stroller. DH always took her when he got home from work and in the middle of the nights so I could pump and since he's been gone and I've been doing this all solo I've been lucky to get to pump 4 times a day...I had to get creative; she always seems to know when I need to pump and becomes a gremlin!
Milk Storage question: I'm pumping 1-2 oz to have for DH to feed LO a bottle so I can get out of the house. I've been keeping it in the fridge for 1-3 days and freezing if he doesn't use it. Is this okay, should I freeze it right away and then have him thaw it? Also if he warms up milk from the fridge can it go back into the fridge if he doesn't finish it? And for how long? Thank you!
