First Baby Purchase

edited June 2016 in February 2017 Moms
Now we know it is entirely too early for this, but some of us probably can't help ourselves...  What's your first baby purchase?  Go ahead, share!  If you are waiting until 12 weeks or 20 weeks - just tell us what you have your eye on!

Re: First Baby Purchase

  • I've been researching the heck out of strollers and cribs.  I'll probably actually go low-end on both, since I hope to baby wear most of the time and don't need a fancy convertible crib since I still own the very nice twin bed set I grew up with.  They're just fun for me to research and I plan to buy them myself so I get exactly what I want.

  • About a week and a half before I found out I was pregnant I saw the most adorable horror movie themed onesies at a convention. I've resisted the urge to hunt down the vendor and buy all of them. I'm honestly not sure how much longer I can hold out.
  • I got a stuffed animal - Jellycat Bashful Bunny.

(I guess I first got a keepsake pregnancy journal but not sure if that really counts.  I ordered The Belly Book this time.  Last time I used From Pea to Pumpkin but I didn't like that one so much.)
  • I already have the crib (from DD) but need to get a new changing table/dresser. I will probably end up buying the same exact one she has in her room bc I'm too lazy to move it across the hall. In my defense, we would have to take it apart and rebuild it lol!
  • I have lots because I have a son, but want to get some clothing I am in love with, but I think I'll wait till I know the sex.

For DS#1 we bought an old French provincial dresser from Craigslist and restored/refinished/painted it ourselves in antique white - superheavy so it is staying where it is! - but it is my favorite item in the room!  I don't think we would have the time for such a project this time around... sigh second baby gets the short end already...
  • Question: Is a changing table an essential or a nice-to-have?
  • IMO a changing table is necessary. do you have a different place you want to change a poop diaper?  a spare bed with a towel works or the floor. you end up changing diapers a lot so I'd just get one.

I just really haven't thought through the ins and outs yet, I suppose.  I feel like most of my friends with babies just use those little fold out pads wherever they happen to be.
  • that's what you do when you don't have a changing table handy.

we just bought a ikea one for maybe $100 for my son and it's still ok 2+ years later.

lots of people use the changing table topper on a dresser which is nice of you have the space and a dresser which is the right height.

Question: Is a changing table an essential or a nice-to-have?
I ended up getting a dresser and a dresser/changing table combo. It really helped when DD was little. Now, I change her diapers on the floor bc it is easier now that she is bigger. I would recommend it. I got a semi cheap one and it held up pretty well. It was similar to this:

  • We purchased a double stroller shortly after we found out. We've had our eye out for one for awhile on Craigslist - our DD has a little friend down the street so it's also helpful for pushing both of them around. Our first purchase for DD was the single stroller - so it was only fitting :)

AFM we bought a pink floyd onsie haha

It seems to be "just one more thing" and depending on the layout of your house, it could be a PITA. For example, the babies room is on the 3rd level of our home and we generally hang out/ spend most of our time on the 1st level.
  • I feel sad, because my kid has, like, everything and anything. And for this baby, I'm like "well, it doesn't really need anything, because it has hand-me-downs."

I did order a Jellycat plush and a lovee. I figure those are things my daughter won't give away, and it would be nice to have those.

If it's a boy, I'll definitely be buying things, but most of the big things are done. Any stroller would have to be a double now, and we pretty much have everything else, minus car seats.

  • We had a designated changing table with our first. Meh, I use the floor or the bed or the whatever. A pad protects the surfaces fine.

Now we'll be 4 people in <1000 square feet and my husband has a home office. Ain't no room for changing tables. I'm thinking a portable-something to keep the diaper changing supplies together, though. More a caddy than a diaper bag.

@momousekee I just used a baslet/caddy sort of thing. Worked great.

I have never used one. I used a pad or towel on the floor, couch or bed. I kept a basket with wipes, diapers and necessary items in the livingroom and bedroom. (And family room-although I could have carried it around) I didn't want to go back to the bedroom each time baby needed a new diaper. (And they went a lot)
I could have afforded one but I figured I would spend the money on something el@MoFree

    Edit
  • Question: Is a changing table an essential or a nice-to-have?
I didn't buy a changing table but we did get a pack n play with a changing attachment. It's worked out well for us. The actual pack n play we use for storage of all LO's toys, diaper/wipes, etc.
  • For my last pregnancy my first purchase for baby was books and a toy that my oldest had when he was born, then I bought a crochet hat and bootie set. I was so excited I bought them almost as soon as I tested.
  • We used a changing pad on top of the dresser ('secured' with a strap nailed to the back of the dresser).  This was very useful for us especially for the first 9 months.  I hardly ever changed the baby anywhere else except after his evening bath I would get him ready on our bed.

I like things organized and in their place - so must have changing table with all the things in their respective spots for easy access.
  • Thanks for the input, guys! I'm trying to be pretty minimalist with my baby purchases and was just wondering if that was a reasonable corner to cut. Sounds like it may very well be.
  • I don't think a changing table is necessary.
I would change wherever was convenient and just keep A&A blankets everywhere to lay her on.
I seriously kept a diaper and wipes in like every room.
  • I found a super cute bassinet, gently used, at a yard sale for $10. I bought that up real quick!

Same. We got the Eddie Bauer crib/dresser from Target, and it has a $30ish add-on changer. Honestly, we hardly used it, so I'm just going to get the same crib/dresser for the second kid to reuse the changer. I just started changing the baby while she was in the crib. Still do, or, on the floor. But we don't spend a lot of time in her room--we are in the living room.

So, the pack 'n play with the changer attachment? We used that a lot, since it was downstairs.

  • We haven't bought anything yet but I do plan to wear the heck out of this baby so I have my eyes on an Ergo.  I never wore DS but now that I'll have two, I think it'll really come in handy.  Plus, if this one happens to be a girl, I'll probably start buying clothes soon after finding out.  But I do plan to buy this onesie regardless:

As for the changing table, I don't feel it's necessary.  We used a topper on top of DS' dresser but honestly, I just kept small baskets of diapers, wipes, and ointment in a few rooms so I could change him wherever.  I plan to do the same with this one.

  • My sister is due in October so I did purchase an extra set of Swaddle Me's when I saw them 50% off and decided to keep one of the Aden and Anais swaddles that I had purchased for her on sale as well.

  • We used a changing pad on top of a dresser and I used that in her room until my toddler was able to dress herself. My husband and I are both tall so we like the higher surface for changes. I also kept diapers and wipes in every room because I wasn't running upstairs to change her on the dresser every time.

I had a fancy carriage (pram) with my oldest and even though we walked a lot I found it kind of a waste. It was really fancy and beautiful but unnecessary. (Think kind of old fashioned classic) It was a gift.

There are some fancy strollers that look nice  but I found a mid range worked fine for us. I needed something for walking in snow, slush, ice, and everything else. (Bus, mall, parks, etc) I didn't want to pay $1200+ for a carriage to do all that.

That being said there are some great choices out there.
  • I have done cloth diapers in the past but never newborn.  I bought a few newborn covers from a going out of business sale and a few GMD fitteds off the swap.  We honestly don't need much since this is #4, but our infant car seat has expired.  Will have to research is there is some amazing new technology with those or stick with the band we liked in the past.
