Paternity Leave

Re: Paternity Leave

  • My husband actually gets 4 weeks of paid paternity leave (mothers get 12 at his company!), so we are grateful for that.  I get 6, and plan on taking an additional 2 with sick and vacation time.  We are hoping to split my husbands time - either 2 weeks at the beginning, and 2 weeks when I go back, or 1 and 3.  Last time he took the first week off, and then a second week later after my mom had gone home.  But I also got 11 weeks (some unpaid) last time.

  • So nice to have the trail in your backyard! My MIL has a trail by her house and she got a bob for her grandkids to use when they visit so I'm excited to try it out over there.
  • With our first child my husband didn't take any time off when she was born. He took the Friday/Monday off (was in the hospital on the Friday and gave birth on the Sunday) but no leave. She was in the nicu for a few weeks and once I brought her home he didn't take any time off. We decided I would rather him use the time off for when she was older and did more than just eat and poop every hour. So instead he took a lot of long weekends in the summer or days when I just needed help and it worked out well because the 4 month sleep regression was HELL and I would have had a mental breakdown if he wasn't able to take time off to help me with it.

This time he is taking two weeks off when baby is born, but that is because I will need help with our older child. It will be two weeks unpaid as he just starts a new job in July. He told his employer when he interviewed he needed it. If for some reason this baby is just so easy and my dd isn't having a hard time transitioning he will go back earlier and use some of the time when I need him to take time off to help or to help wrangle both kids to the Dr ect. on top of his other PTO.

I am Canadian so I have a year mat leave if that makes a difference.

@Alygohome so jealous of your maternity leave... i get paid for about 8 weeks...but the last month of my leave is unpaid
  • Husband works for the government and has 3 weeks of saved up leave time, mainly because I'm a lawyer and can only take vacation if my billable hours are ahead enough, so our current plan is for him to take 2 weeks full-time off and then 2 weeks of half days off.  I'm sure he'll still be getting calls during that time though and end up doing some work from home.  We're super lucky he's got the time saved up so he can take the time paid, and I figure if he has the time saved up, he might as well use it.

Yes we are lucky to have a year paid but it is only like under 50% of my actual salary so its like getting 4.5 months paid and the rest unpaid. But still. Would rather that then only 8 weeks paid!
  • My husband actually gets 8 weeks of paid leave, but I doubt he'll take all of it. He works from home a day or two during the week anyways. So we are thinking he will probably take a week or two off and then maybe from there a couple days a week or at least just work from home mostly? But this is baby number 3, and my first one starts school come August so I'm not really concerned this time around because we are so used to the chaos. I wish though that he would have had this job during baby number 1 because he only had a week then and it was quite the transition.
  • DH gets 2 weeks paid leave. He had the same with DS1 and it was a perfect amount of time. I would love for him to be around a little longer this time to help with DS1, but I'm happy he can get 2 weeks.

  • My husband's company was just purchased by another company. So for our first son he got 4 weeks paid leave and now he got bumped down to 2 weeks. I know that's still really good, but a little frustrating when we were expecting 4 and this change just happened in the last couple weeks.

With our son, he used two weeks upfront, one week here and there for doctors visits, and one week on a family trip right before my maternity leave was over.

With this one we will probably do more like a week and a half and then save a few days for doctors visits.  He can still use his sick days for those if needed, though.

  • NICU RN That's unreal that despite the media about how horrible the leave in our country is compared to all industrialized nations, your DH actually had something many don't have and they cut it in half!  That seems like a great perk that would attract talent to the company.  Blows my mind....
