3rd/4th degree tears

if you had a 3rd or 4th degree tear with your first delivery, how did your second go?  I had a 3rd degree that healed fine after my VBAC.  After not wanting to do a RCS, OB is now pushing me on a CS bc of the tear.  She said its extremely likely to happen again. My research is showing about 10% chance.

Re: 3rd/4th degree tears

  • I had a 3rd degree tear with my first; I tore towards the front and towards the anus.  With my second, the dr. said he wanted to closely look at the previous doctor's notes about how close to my anus the tear was.  If it got into that region at all or significantly, that's when he would have highly recommended a CS second time around.  He said the chances of tearing the same way again would be higher, and when trying to repair that again, I could face incontinence issues for life.  Yikes.
Thankfully, I had not torn into my anal region really at all, so I had a second vaginal birth.  I tore again, but only 2nd degree.

  • I had a 3rd degree tear with my first that has healed fine. My midwife did ask about it during my first appointment but she said absolutely nothing about it affecting this birth.

I had a 3rd degree tear both times and healed fine. They haven't expressed any concerns for this pregnancy/delivery.
  • I don't recall what degree my first VBA2C tear was, I did have quite a bit of damage to my vaginal wall, due to him being sunny side up, but with my second VBA2C he was face down and slid right out in like 2 pushes and no tearing at all...sorry, not sure if that was very helpful :-/
