Emmett John decided to make a dramatic entrance to the world yesterday at 2:20 p.m. At just 26w2d gestation, he weighed 1 lb. 14 oz and is 13 inches long.
I had been feeling wetter than normal for a few days, and it seemed to progressively be getting worse. Yesterday morning I woke up to even more fluid, this time tinged with blood, and I was also having mild, painless contractions every 3-5 minutes. I'd been having Braxton Hicks for a few weeks but nothing this regular. I went into L&D to get checked out, and found out I had a small amniotic leak and was in preterm labor (those weren't Braxton Hicks). They gave me magnesium to try to stop the contractions, but they continued to get progressively stronger, and about 5 hours later I was fully dilated and there was nothing they could do but deliver me. 2 pushes later and he was out. I'm still kind of in shock.
We have a long road ahead of us, as the doctors estimate Emmett will be here until close to his original due date of August 22nd. But he is doing beautifully, all things considered. I got officially discharged from the hospital today but am spending the night in the NICU. DH went home to check on the dogs and will join me in the morning (there's just one bed in our NICU room). We sent DS1 to stay with grandparents for a few days so we can focus on Emmett, but life is going to be a tough balancing act between our home life and our NICU life for the next 3 months.
I probably won't be on this board much anymore. I will miss you, but I need to start learning about all things preemie and NICUs! I'm keeping friends and family updated via my blog if anyone is interested in following: keepingupwiththehoffmans.com. I wish you all the best as you keep baking those precious babes!

Re: So, I had a baby yesterday.
ETA: I just read your blog birth story and it brought me to tears. What a scary ordeal, but I am so glad that you and Emmett are okay. I also just wanted to say I admire your positive outlook on seeing he NICU as an extension of your pregnancy. What a strong and lucky boy Emmett is to have you as his mama.

Back home, a friend of a friend went through a very similar experience with delivering her twins at 26w3d last year. They just celebrated their first birthday and are perfect. Here's a link to their Facebook page: facebook.com/Prayersforbrockandmaci I hope it helps and keeps everyone optimistic.
Have you looked into possibly the Ronald McDonald house? They assist with housing when little ones/children are in the hospital. Wishing you and the family best of luck with everything.
:Big Hugs:
Edit to add that reading your blog posts brought tears to my eyes! Both of you are so strong!
Congratulations on your little bundle, and I am sorry for the extra bit of scary that comes along with this. You'll be in our thoughts. Hang in there, we'll miss you, and if you *do* want to hop on now and then for the support, we'll be here for you!

I have a friend who has babies in the NICU and a toddler. Once she was released she worked it so that she spends mornings at the hospital then goes home and does stuff around the house, etc during her son's nap. Her husband goes to the hospital on his way home from work. Then they have "family time" at home before the toddler goes to bed. They may have adjusted this schedule now that her babies are a month old and nursing more but that's how she worked it out in the beginning.
