  • @rachlee2010 I know that but because we are doing genetic testing its just another thing to take it away from us. Still waiting on last months because they couldn't get a conclusive so they are testing it again. Dr says most of the time when that happens it's not a good sign. I'm so tired, physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted. Three months in a row of IVF and I'm not even sure if I have any yet.

"Just don't think about it" "give it a few more tries" um hello lol I'm tired of being a pin cushion, hormonally insane woman who doesn't grow money off trees lol. *end of rant lol

  • Question for the group. Does anyone listen to the Beat Infertility podcast? I just listened to an old episode about DOR and the RE had some interesting things to say about PGS and other stuff. I haven't seen an RE yet (still waiting for my first appointment in July) but some of this is different from what I've heard. Just curious if anyone has listened or has any thoughts!

@AL_TwinCities I listened to the podcast you posted. I found it very interesting. Thank you for posting it. I was already wanting to research bcp use prior to the cycle. I thought that was an interesting point. DH and I haven't had any embryos make it to day 5 but we had wanted PGS done.  After listening to the podcast, I don't know.

  • I have been listening to all of the podcast episodes - even ones where the diagnosis is not one I have myself. I find it very educational and helpful to hear about other journeys. This particular episode suggests that women with low AMH should never be put on birth control at any point during an IVF cycle. The RE suggests that we already have "quieted" reproductive systems, so the birth control step could actually suppress it further and even hurt us by making it difficult to wake up our systems after using birth control. He also suggested that the research shows PGS to NOT be connected to an increase in live births, which surprised me. I had read that PGS is important for women with poor egg quality. So while I am not confused about the conflicting information, I still feel more educated and prepared to advocate for myself!

  • I havne't listened to the podcasts but I have heard that for DOR birth control is usually a bad idea before a cycle.  I was not on birth control before my IVF and if the dr had suggested it I was going to put up a fight but he never brought it up.  I was on birth control before my FET but we didn't want active ovaries then so it was fine.

What did the podcast say about PGS? That it wasn't important?  We decided not to do it because the dr said we didn't need to.  We have no known genetic issues and we are under 35 so he said (with no guarantee) that if we got an embryo to grow to day 5 and then take inside my body he said usually it is a good strong egg.
  • Exciting @wenikilina !

@rachlee2010, right he said PGS hasn't been proven to actually increase live birth outcomes. He said it's a waste of money, essentially.

  • @AL_TwinCities I am so torn about the pgs. I didn't listen to the podcast, so I'm speaking blindly though lol

We did not do it because of financial reasons. I wish we would have though. The fact that we went from 11 to only 3 in 5 days tells me there had to have been some type of issues. I think they say you usually end up around at least 50-60% survival rate. And we didnt. We used icsi and donated sperm, so I don't think lack of fertilization is to blame.

I think when you are banking like @LSatturo126 that the pgs is a great idea. If you are doing multiple rounds with smaller numbers, you want the very best success rates and to only use the ones who passed all of the tests.

I think people that have had multiple losses could benefit from pgs bc they could see if a defect is causing the loss and possibly prevent it by choosing specific embryos.

I am still confused as to how pgs doesn't increase live birth rate. I should probably take the time to listen to the podcast lol. I just feel if you only put in genetically sound embryos, you are more likely to have implantation and a lesser risk of a loss.

Oh, and the bcp. Yes that makes complete sense to me. The only reason dw was on bcp was to sync us. Otherwise, I don't think the RE would have done it.

RE DX for me: Anovulatory cycles/Mild PCOS  RE DX for DW: Endometrioma on left Ovary.

  • I would never consider NOT doing PGS.  My 5AA, ahead of the curve, beautiful looking embryo was found to be chromosomally abnormal/incompatible with life.  There is no way to tell by looking at it, but it never had a chance to become a baby.  We would have totally wasted our time (and a whole lot more money than we paid for PGS) to implant that embryo.  And, since it is a boy, it is definitely the one we would have gone with.  My embryos were made when I was 35. No family history on either side for us of anything whatsoever genetically wrong, other than my BRCA mutation.  And we still found a problem.  My RE says that she thinks PGS is going to become standard practice in the future.

I think the way they use the numbers to say that PGS doesn't increase live birth rate is that they look at number of comfirmed pregnancies to live birth.  The chromosomally abnormal embryos either don't implant at all or are miscarried within a very short period of time, so they would never actually become confirmed pregnancies at all.  Does that make sense??
Me: Age 38  Husband: Age 39
    Chemo killed my ovaries
Currently:1 female embryo frozen at blastocyte stage, graded 6AA with a BRCA1 mutation
    4/16 ER cancelled on CD7: 1 follicle on L/ 0 follicles on R
    Now planning FET 7/6/16
Also starting ER in June (my sister is donating eggs), and will try for a boy/second pregnancy
  • Makes total sense! Thanks for making me NOT regret and remind me why we decided to do it in the first place. Xoxo Happy Mother's Day too all you now mommies and mommies who are baring. You're already a mom now! ;)

  • @Knottie1456036854 @twomommiestobe this is why I was hoping for some opinions in this group - you guys are the best! I was surprised to hear this RE's opinion on PGS, so it is helpful to hear different perspectives. I am going to ask my own RE about it if we do get to IVF as the treatment direction and see what she says. It sounds like there are very good reasons to do it (especially for people like myself who have had more than one loss), and the medical literature may be conflicting because there just isn't enough research out there. Really appreciate your responses!
