What if you hate water?

Seriously, I don't like the taste of water - I'm weird.  I can really only drink it when I'm feeling dehydrated or to take meds, but otherwise, it's just blech.  What do you ladies do to get your water in?  I'm definitely not drinking enough this pregnancy, and I can feel it when I start to get dehydrated.

Re: What if you hate water?

  • I am the same way, I need something flavored to drink when I eat. Also I feel like when I drink water, it goes right through me and I'm in the bathroom every hour.

I have been drinking more milk. I do have one soda a day too because I refuse to give up caffeine entirely.

Other than that I'm not sure what else I could do...because I hate that darn crystal light junk.

  • I hate all those little squirt bottle add flavor to your water things. I just add straight lemon or lime juice to my water. It's almost the only way I can drink it. Otherwise I just have to force myself and know I'm not doing it for my own enjoyment.

My doctor suggested coconut water. She also suggested watering down fruit juice, so you still get a splash of taste.

  • I second the Powerade/Gatorade. I like the crystal light stuff, the pink lemonade flavor. I never drank a whole lot of water either before I got pregnant but I bring a bottle of water to work each day and refill it at least once or twice because we have a water cooler. I'm not able to buy soft drinks or anything at work so it just forces me to drink my water or I won't have anything. I save my one coke a day for dinner. :)
  • I've been adding the Dasani water flavor things to my water. If I didn't, there is no way I would drink enough water. I also do lime with carbonated water to cut down on soda.
  • What about sparkling flavored water? You can get a whole pallet of Talking Rain at Costco. I have been loving those. They're all natural too.

Ive never heard of this brand.  I've always gotten La Croix from Costco, is it similar?

  • I have been using the kool-aid singles in bottled water. They have the real sugar but 50% less than regular kool-aid. They are only 30 calories per serving and do not taste like a diet drink. Artificial sugars give me migraines so these have been a life saver while trying to get my water down.
  • OMG coconut water.....I tried drinking this when I was having supply issues because I kept reading that it was good for milk production.  One sip and I gagged so bad lol

  • Make a pitcher of flavored water - a few of my favorites: grapefruit, cucumber, mint ; strawberry, Rosemary ; plain cucumber; orange, lime - just play around with different fruits and herbs!  I hardly ever drink anything but water - I like to save my calories for yummy food nom noms B)

  • I don't mind water at all, but I do get bored with it sometimes. La Croix is great. It's just naturally flavored carbonated water. If that's still too much like water for you, you could try the ICE sparkling waters. They're really good too.

  • I pretty much force myself to drink it. I'll reward myself once I've had a certain amount a day. Drink 3 bottles of water then I'll drink a soda or juice or something.
  • I've been drinking 4 parts water 1 part Costco organic lemonade for at least part of my water.  Sometimes I add fresh strawberries too.  I don't like to consume artificial flavors or high fructose corn syrup.
  • I add Mio. Lots of flavored Mio. I prefer strawberry watermelon. It helps me drink over 1/2 a gallon daily. I also only drink water. Occasionally I have an oj on the weekend or apple juice.  But the rest of the time it's Mio water.

  • I make myself have a glass or bottle before I can drink something else. So if I want iced tea, I quick drink a big glass of water! It's definitely not my favorite but I feel so much better when I drink more.
  • I feel your pain.  I am so, so tired of water.  I've been infusing mine with fruit for months.  Until a couple weeks ago, I was maybe drinking 4 glasses a day--not near enough.  It took me starting to feel crappy, water-logged, bloated, starting to swell, etc. for me to decide I needed to just power through.  So now, I have a little schedule worked out... 1 8 oz glass by 7 am, 9 am, 11 am, 1 pm, 3 pm, 5 pm, 7 pm, and 9 pm.  Setting the hour goals and pacing it has helped.  I also don't let myself have a non-water drink until I've met the quota for the day so far... so if I want iced tea with lunch, that's really 3 drinks between 11-1.  I hate it, am so over it, and the constant bathroom breaks suck, but man, am I feeling just generally better!!
  • Have you tried filtering the water?

For example a Brita pitcher with a fresh filter.  Or if you use a fridge dispenser, change filter in your unit.  It can make a big improvement to the smell and taste of water.  But, like any filter, it does not last forever, if you leave it too long it doesn't do its job and in fact bacteria can start to grow.
  • Like @nikkoli98, I add a small amount of lemonade (I buy Simply Lemonade in Raspberry) to my water. Yes it's sugar, but helps get enough water in me and I rationalize that staying hydrated us more important.
  • I hope this pic doesn't come through insanely huge...I cannot figure out how to make it smaller. A friend of mine makes these and it really helps to break it down by time. It feels like a long time to get a little water down.
  • Here is a pic of just the vinyl she uses with different phrases.
  • @jamiesc58 cute idea! I wish I could drink water every hour, but I work in a lab where food and drink isn't allowed :(

  • I was flavoring mine with lemon or cucumbers. But then stopped that for about 8 weeks. I was starting to get bored with plain water agian so I went back to fruit this week. Strawberries. oranges Limes. Lemons. I would just try a few to see if you like them. Cucumber water is really refreshing.
  • Lurking from July but unless you put those decals on a gallon jug of water it is definitely not enough water. You should be drinking roughly half your weight in ounces every day. Yes it is hard but you can do it. Sometimes you just have to suck it up and down a glass or bottle every few hours but it is doable.

  • You know what my silly trick is? Very simple and small... But I use a straw. And ice. LOL.

For some reason, it's easier than chugging water... I drink way more water with my bottle that has a straw. I drink about 100 ounces a day this way. I would likely get UTIs and such if I didn't drink all that water, I get so dehydrated. I drink filtered water (I have a Berkey, I love it). I can't stand tap water... Too bleachy around here.
  • @acpear11 I use a massive bubba straw cup and always do ice, too, but it still doesn't so it for me.

This is the craziest thing I've ever heard.  If that's the case, I'd have to drink almost 1800oz of water a day to make it to half my body weight.  That's beyond ridiculous.

  • It's actually pretty accurate.  For example, if you weigh 160 lb, you should drink about 80 oz of water a day.  That is just over two full 32 oz Nalgene bottles.  Mayo Clinic says for pregnant women 2.3 liters or 78 oz (approx.) is the average.  I normally drink that much and when pregnant, definitely have to increase.  I can't even imagine how many oz I had per day when nursing!

  • Not much to add, other than I love all of the suggestions in this thread.  I don't have a problem drinking water normally, but I definitely struggle when pregnant.  I'll admit that most days I'm dehydrated by the end of the day because I haven't even come close to drinking enough.

Edited: I just got to thinking about this some more. @Lindsayleigh1989 may possibly mean that if you weigh for example 130 lbs, if you divide that by half it is 65. So you should be drinking about 65 ounces of water per day. If so, ignore some of my post below.

I agree that sounds ridiculous and like extremely dangerous advice. I think there is a big misunderstanding on how much water one should be drinking a day. You CAN drink too much water to the point that it puts stress on your internal organs and possibly causes damage.

Your kidneys in particular can only handle so much volume per hour/time. And while I am not saying being pregnant it isn't important to keep hydrated, we already have an increased blood volume that our body is working extra hard to filter and pump to keep in mind. But drinking 1800 ounces of fluid a day, you WILL drown your internal organs.

My OB said to aim for 8 glasses a day or roughly 64 ounces. All liquids count towards this. If you eat a diet high in fruits/vegetables and low in sodium intake, you probably could do just fine almost hitting that 8 glass mark everyday.

I feel like if you are forcing yourself to drink large amounts of water at one time when you are not thirsty that is unhealthy.

  • mmclark10 So it's not oz for oz, which is how I read the other post.  I was like uuummmm that's almost 1800 oz/day - no lol.  That's makes a lot more sense, but still for me at my pregnancy weight, I'd be drinking 100-110oz/day, and I don't get anywhere close to that, nor do I feel I need to.  My body definitely lets me know when I haven't had enough, and I typically feel fine if I hit 60-80ish oz.  When I was BF, though, I drank a lot more, and that's only because I was sooooo thirsty all the time.  I probably drink close to 200 oz/day some of those days without even thinking about it.

For sure!  I think the poster wasn't clear on what she meant - I read it as oz for oz, but I guess she meant if you weigh 200 lbs you should drink 100 oz of water.  That makes a bit more sense, but still, per my post above, I think that's a lot depending on how heavy you are.  If I can get 60-80oz/day, I feel fine, and my body will tell me if  haven't had enough - hence my OP because I've had a lot of days where I just don't drink enough and water, even fancy Evian, is blech.  And I also count other liquids, except milk and coffee, as "water."  Like if I have lemonade or some kind of juice, which I actually only drink while pregnant because I crave it, I count that toward my liquid intake.

Well Unless that person really weight 3600pounds which I doubt, @Lindsayleigh1989 advice is NOT dangerous and very true! What is dangerous is women not drinking water because guess what: it's what keeps your body running AND your baby too. Think amniotic fluid but also the importance for bodily function. No wonder why the number one cause of Braxton Hicks is dehydration... Because the body needs water.
Does it sucks having to go to the bathroom every 30 minutes : yes!
But the best way to get rid of water retention is to drink more! You'll be really glad with summer around the corner to not put an extra 20 pounds in water weight, because swelling is way more uncomfortable than peeing!
Yeah, the person who posted that originally wasn't clear.  I read it as oz for oz.  And if I figure out my weight in oz, that's almost 3600oz, so half that is 1800oz.  Not what she meant, but it wasn't clear until someone else chimed in that it means lbs for oz.

After I posted I thought about it some more too as I was making breakfast and had the same epiphany. Ha! I agree, I think she meant half your weight in lbs and that is the amount of ounces. I edited my post above to reflect that thought.

I also agree that it would be hard to drink 100 oz a day. I think sometimes people forget to listen to their bodies. If you aren't thirsty and you are forcing yourself to drink liquids, that seems unhealthy to me. and I'm talking about extreme forcing water in, for example drinking two glasses quickly to meet your intake for the day, that sounds awful.

  • I've read that waiting until you feel thirsty to drink water isn't good because then your body is already a little dehydrated. I always drink whether I'm thirsty or not. Keep in mind also that your water intake affects your amniotic fluid levels. Low amniotic fluid comes with a slew of other problems. I just suck it up and drink the water.
I agree. I guess I was more talking about downing like two or three glasses when you aren't thirsty at all just to meet the minimum. I also read in one of my pregnancy books that the amniotic fluid is completely replaced and filtered every one to two hours which I find really neat.
