Weight loss in pregnancy

Question about weight gain/loss in pregnancy. Is it normal to lose a few pounds early on? I know it's normal not to "gain" initially, and I didn't until well into second trimester with my first, but this time I'm losing and haven't been throwing up or anything. I'm about 4 lbs lighter than when I got my first positive. I'm still running but only every other day, so less often than pre-pregnancy. Could it be muscle loss that quickly? Should I be forcing myself to eat more calories? I haven't had a big appetite the last few weeks and my diet is so different from last time (now dairy/gluten free & reduced sugar). Just not sure what to make of it. Not panicking but want to make sure it's normal.

It depends on what your starting weight was. I'd say if you're eating well and not over exerting yourself you should be fine. Doctors say you can continue your current workout routine with a few modifications for pelvic exercises starting at 20 weeks. I do know that according to my doctor and personal experience, pregnancy makes you dehydrated quicker. I'm drinking more water than I ever have and know i'm getting dehydrated because I used to pee all the time and lately not so much and TMI my urine is darker. So i'm guzzling more water. I would try that first.

  • I'm plus size, but I lost a significant amount of weight early on with my previous pregnancy. I think its fine as long as you are taking care of yourself and not TRYING to lose weight.

  • Thank you both! I am definitely drinking more water now and not trying to lose weight. I'm on the petite side to begin with and when I changed my diet and exercise habits back in January I plateaued on weight loss about 1 month later so this was totally unexpected. My appetite has diminished with this pregnancy but I wondered if I should actively try to consume more calories. Sounds like maybe this is still in the range of normal though?
  • I also lost weight early on last time - due to morning sickness. If you're really perplexed as to why you lost it though - it's probably good to have a chat with your doc. For me - I could barely be in the same room as food for 4 months straight. Once it passed though I gained it all back and then got right on the curve for my initial pre-pregnancy weight as though it had never happened.

  • Yes I will mention it at my next appointment for sure!
  • Last pregnancy I lost over 50lbs before I developed Pre-E.  Doc wasn't worried about the loss, as I was taking in enough calories, hydrated, and taking my pre natal.

So unless your OB says something I wouldn't be worried about it.
