Second Timers (or more) What are you Obsessed With?

I've found in my 16 months of being a mama so far that I've had 2 obsessions that I just can't stop buying for baby,

#1. Sippy cups. We were able to find our perfect brand of bottle for us on the 2nd attempt (Medela bottles with pump at first, switched to Dr. Brown's on formula to decrease gas), but sippy cups I just kept on buying! Soft spout, 360 cups, straws, no straws, etc.  Luckily that has calmed down a bit now that kiddo isn't picky.

#2. BOOKS! Oh my goodness.  My baby shower was book themed so we started off with a decent library for little man, but I pick him up a book EVERYWHERE I go! Even if they're good deals, it is out of control.  We have every little Dr. Seuss/Eric Carle board book ever made, and so so so many others. And he gets them as gifts too (We surprisingly have had very few duplicates, and I plan to donate duplicates to his daycare). But I just can't stop! I love sharing a new book for him, but won't need to buy/have any left to buy for #2!!

Haven't considered yet what my buying obsession will be for #2, a lot of others from my first BMB loved bottle buying, baby carrier buying (Wild Tula fanatics), etc. How about the rest of you?  Any first time moms already stocking up on a particular item??

Mine is super boring - diapers. Obviously that's something you need to continuously buy unless you cloth diaper, but I am obsessed with stocking up way ahead of time. I'm in a pickle now because my son is pretty much bursting out of size fours and I have well over a months supply left in that size. Luckily I can divert some of this to newborn/size1/size2 and justify it as stocking up for baby. I just can't miss a good sale!

Other than that we buy way too many toys (DH is worse than I am but it's so sweet I have a hard time getting upset about it). DS has enough trains and rails to supply a daycare and every single room in the house has a corner or space dedicated to toys. They are taking over!!

ETA I've already completed all the newborn diapers I'll need for this babe and am almost done with size 1.

  • @AnnaS930 My daughter loves to throw her juice around and purposely drips it on the ground. The first time we got one of those 360 cups for her she was so mad because it wouldn't drip on the floor. Happy mom moment! And I saw somewhere they have handled cups too, so I'm totally getting one for the new baby.

I go through phases with DD. When she was a year old I discovered Boden clothing and bought way too much for her, oops. Books, toys, hair bows all cycle through.
I am trying to refrain from major buying with this one since we already have so much but I know I'll only be able to hold myself back for so long. I have been looking at lots of wraps and carriers and I think that'll be my next obsession.

  • Obsessions for McKenna have been books, clothes, stuffed animals, shoes, and headbands. I'm going to have to know the sex of this baby before I can determine what my obsessions for it will be. I do plan to get more into baby wearing this time since I already have one that I'll need hands free for this time, so that may be one.

On a side note, I'm kind of sad that if we have another girl, I'm not going to be able to justify buying her clothes for her entire first year because we have so many already.

  • Books! My kids love books, and my husband and I get sick of reading the same thing over and over. Craft stuff as well. My kids love projects.
  • Ugh, I hate sippy cups! Where do the pieces go?! I can't think of any obsessions right now. I do enjoy researching children's toys and trying to find the best ones.

  • @AnnaS930 I've bought so much, and they aren't cheap. I try to catch them on baby steals or Zulily.

  • Clothes are probably my biggest obsession.  I also have lots of lunch containers and accessories for packing her lunch.

  • I love Babylegs!  When my kids were little, they wore them on their legs with onesies - SO CUTE and so easy for diaper changes and potty training.  Now that they're older, they wear them underneath short sleeve shirts.

If this one is a girl, I'm absolutely buying more!
  • I'm secretly happy I'm not having a girl, I'd go broke buying all the cute girl stuff. FYI, I didn't have a preference, just happy and healthy.

  • I haven't really been able to buy what I want for my kids but if I could it'd be clothes. Specifically, matching clothes. I love dressing my girls in matching clothes. I have spent hours looking for matching dresses for Easter, Christmas or whatever. Also shoes. I like for my kids to have the right shoes. I just picked up a pair of Keen sandals for the 2 year old today, and I'm taking the 2 older ones to get sneakers tomorrow.

I do not buy my kids books. We have lots, and they like them, and we do read them. But. Last time I bought them new books they ripped them apart. I was furious and now we only get books from the library (and I keep very close tabs on them) , other people gift them to us, or we get them second hand. It just isn't worth it right now to buy brand new books.
  • @LeahKnits - my husband just grabbed a pair of Keen sandals for my 1 year old from his work last week. They are so stinkin cute, I can't wait for Summer to come and see him running around in them!

  • @AnnaS930 They're the perfect summer shoes for kids! They're good for water, and they're good for out of water. Don't have to bring more than one pair of shoes when we go to the lake. And they're easy for kids to get on and off by themselves. I want all my kids to have a pair for this summer. Maybe not the youngest, as she isn't even walking yet.
  • @LeahKnits - yes! Agreed! I am actually wearing Keen maryjanes right now, I really love their shoes. As for the kiddo, I love that they are sandals but have the toe guard to them! He has only been walking for a month, I really don't need him catching his toe on the ground when running around and hurting himself (more than he will already!)

  • Right now DH and I are having fun buying DS toys. That kid is so spoiled.  And when I have the opportunity to buy him clothes, I absolutely make the best of it! We get so many hand-me-downs from his cousin that I really don't have much need to buy him clothes and it makes me sad.

  • My weakness for toys tends to be Little People - and I think I love them more than my son does. I was a huge fan of my dollhouse as a kid and have always really liked role playing with kiddos (barbies, GI Joes, etc.) I have been able to hold back but have to go down the aisle every time I'm at Target (at least weekly) just to see if anything is such a good deal that I can't pass it up!

Currently we are collecting the VTech GoGo Smart Wheels.  DS got some track for his birthday and we have jumped down the rabbit hole.

  • @marajay6 - I LOVE those! We have the Little People (of course) City Skyscrape or something of the sort, so he has a dozen little people in cars.. for that reason I haven't let myself get pulled into the VTech as well, though the Smart Wheels are AWESOME and I (I mean he) plays with them at his best buddy's house!

  • @AnnaS930 Little People are an obsession for me, too. McKenna only has the zoo set, a doll house, and a car so far (and quite a few people), but she and I both love them. Watching her play with the doll house is the best. She puts the people in the chairs, beds, on the toilet, and has them climb the stairs. She'll also put them in the car and say "vroom" while she pushes it around.

@marajay6 We have one of the zoo sets for the GoGo wheels that my parents got DD for her birthday. My mom went crazy and bought all the animals with it, and got her extra track for Christmas, but I want to get more of the sets to add to it.

  • @camichael84 - we have the talking zoo, the big animal zoo and Disney World for big sets. Then we have all of the big animals, lots of smaller animals and people galore. I've held back on the dollhouse ones as I have my huge Little Tikes dollhouse/barn from when I was a kiddo all boxed up waiting for E to be old enough for it. I'm so excitedddd

  • Mainly super clearanced clothes. His grandparents spoil him with toys and he has a LOT of books from my shower.
@annas930- I just scored a pair of "Keen" sandals for LO for $3.50 wooottttt. Can't wait to see his cuteness in them this summer!
  • @AnnaS930 We have the big animal zoo set with all the big animals. I want to get the taking zoo set and the Disney Princess castle (and the bus and helicopter and airplane), but I'm holding off for a special occasion. They're so pricey, that we've given everything except the car to her as gifts.

  • Ummm. $3.50?!?!  My husband got an employee discount at his Outlet location of LLBean and still spent over $15 on ours!  GREAT GET!

  • @camichael84 - all of his have been gifts so far too. Santa got him Disney, we got him big animal zoo and my folks added the other big animals.  I try to reserve those things for gifts, especially with his birthday/Christmas so close we need a lot of ideas for family when December rolls around!

Oh, yes. The toe is great. When my first was 2 she had salt water sandals for water shoes. She was constantly getting sticks and stuff stuck in them and tripping. I'm really hoping to find some second hand for my 4 year old. I found some for $15 in very good condition for my 2 year old.

+1 for go go smart wheels. DS's 5th word was "go" from playing with the toys.

  • I haven't bought much, but I am obsessed with muslin swaddle blankets. I just bought 3 off Zulily, and now I'm looking for the Aiden + Anais stroller blanket. Graham has one and they're just soooo soft.

  • Kickee Pants! It started out as a few PJs here and there and its turned into a full blown obsession!! Its about 95% of what my son wears.  They are the softest material I have ever felt in my life. 90% bamboo 10% spandex (i think)  Once I put my son in the first pair of PJs I knew I was in trouble.  They do have excellent resale value though.  I hoarded a few girly prints I found here and there on sale and when I found out we were having boy #2 I sold them all, for nearly $300  :o:o

  • Children's consignment sales and stores are my new obsession. My child will own nothing new.
Im right there with you! I went to a consignment store yesterday for the first time and got a bunch of maternity clothes from motherhood and Liz Lange and enough clothes to last DS through the summer for $60 - all looked brand new. Why have I not been doing this the whole time?!
  • @AnnaS930 @KimmySchmidtscored them at "Once Upon a Child". I'm not sure if they were ever worn before. I also got him a pair of Sperrys for $6.50, barely used! I had to push through the other moms at the store bc they are like vultures there  :p
  • Ugh, Sperrys.. I love it. So jealous, I never shop consignment... I'm a snob :( A money wasting, good deal missing, snob! Boooo

Same here! We love Little People, and all 3 of my kids play with them. My only complaint with them is that they take up so much room. We have 2 houses, the preschool the horse "stable" thing, an airplane, a school bus, three or four smaller cars. They're so hard to put away.
  • I'm another books lady! I buy my son ALL THE BOOKS. Not going to have anything left to buy for this next kiddo! And anything with a cute picture on the butt! I die over those baby pants with animals and stuff on their cute little tushes. If this next one is a girl, I get to go buy all kinds of new clothes with animals on the butt! Haha!
