I don't remember if this has been asked already, but is a nasal decongestant spray safe to use??
It depends on the spray. I would say most are a no. I am prescribed Dymista, which is basically Flonase with an added antihistamine. I can't take it. I would ask your doctor about the one you want to use specifically. I've been using a Neti Pot and it seems to relieve at least some of the pressure.

so I called my doctor about the nasal spray and they said Flonase is okay but not Afrin. I got some normal saline nasal spray but it doesn't do much. I might have to try the Neti pot
@LizC216 I love roller hot dogs. And just hot dogs in general. I can't go to any sort of sporting event without getting a hot dog. Mmm...
Regarding separate birthing and postpartum rooms, I have two hospital options and both options have separate rooms. I never even considered recovering in the room I gave birth in. The move was super easy and quick (they wheeled me in a wheel chair while I held DD and we went up a private elevator, DH was with us), and it gave us a natural time to let family back to see DD. While in the L&D room, I was being stitched up, checked frequently, and initiating our first breastfeeding session-- things I didn't want anyone but DH there for.
@RedMar- the hospital I delivered at did not have a NICU, the closest is about 20 minutes away. Luckily we did not need it, but a friend who delivered at the same hospital as me did, and that baby was whipped down to the NICU so fast there was no issue in the delay. It's up to you how you feel about baby going to a different hospital if needed for the NICU, but if all signs are low risk I won't have any issue delivering without a NICU again
@AlwaysAuntNeverMom- On my side is the best way that I feel kicks. I actually think a lot of doctors will suggest doing kick counts (if necessary) while lying on your side, it's a great way to feel baby! Happy for you!!
My hospital has a separate delivery room from a recovery room. The transfer was no big deal - my labor was fairly quick so we weren't too settled into the delivery room. On the tour, they tell you that it is a good thing that there are separate rooms since the beds in the delivery rooms are rather uncomfortable.
@SLou24- I'm on the edge of tears of laughter over here. I was just cruising around HDBD and saw your pic (stay with me.. I'm not laughing at you, you look great). I had never clicked on your profile/avatar pic to see it bigger but that's what I pictured you to look like.. so I'm all.. what the way?! Where's the long dark hair, and her skin looks really fair... uhhh yeah. Then I clicked on your name to see your profile pic larger and realize that it's clearly not you, maybe Nikki Minaj? Either way, I've been picturing that little person this whole time and was waaaaay off. I love the internet.
@annas930 I can relate to your husband on spending his "bonus" on something special/different. I direct our musical (which is why I'm pretty MIA lately...my show is in 3 weeks!) and I don't let that money just go to bills. We have our regular income which goes to bills, but my play money is just that, play money. I work extra for it, so I feel like that gives me the right to decide what it is used for. It's not prebudgeted for, because that's what our regular pay is for. Typically most of it ends up towards a family vacation anyway so it doesn't just benefit me, but I usually sneak in a massage or a pedi (or both ) and some clothes shopping without any guilt.
@diagonalley- I think that's great. We discussed it once I got home (it was irritating that he texted me about it while I was at work, probably because he knew I'd be irritated.. wimp!), and he did spend a $50 chunk of it to try out some daily fantasy sports stuff he wants to do. I'm a penny pincher, and he is not. It's a difficult balance. My company does raises not bonuses, so I don't see mine as a chunk and therefore never splurge with it.
I am planning on getting a steam mop later today! That's my treat! My kitchen floors are just not clean enough for my pregnant standards (I vacuum and swiffer them.. but I NEED STEAMMM!)
My random today - I just found out Thursdays are toddler story time at the library and I am irrationally excited that I can go. The real reason for my excitement is that im hoping to meet some other moms by going. All my friends live far away, don't have kids yet or have kids that are way older. I need some real life friends with kids the same age..... Here's to hoping that's someone else's motivation too! (Oh yeah and DS might have fun)
@annas930 A steam mop sounds fabulous. I usually just clean my floor with Honest floor cleaner spray and wipe with a towel. That was pretty hard to do last week with my growing bump so that won't be happening much longer. Perhaps I shall also splurge on this necessity...let me know if you have a recommendation
@Shiva14 That sounds like fun! That's what I'm looking forward to/also slightly worried about when this baby gets old enough to do things like that. Most of my friends who are moms live an hour + away from me. How do I start up convos with moms while stifling my mild social anxiety?! I almost asked a mom at target how she liked her ring sling she had her baby in, but I didn't want to be weird since I don't look obviously pregnant yet.
I am ready for it to be consistently warm. I hate the roller coaster weather we get in the spring. A few weeks ago I bought a bicycle trailer for DS to ride in. Last weekend we finally had the time and weather to get him in it and he loves it! I am now bummed that it looks like this weekend won't give good enough weather to get out and play. There is even a chance of snow. If the extended forecast can be trusted, next weekend will be nice.
It's anatomy scan day so of course I've been awake since 4am. Thanks body but you're 12 hours early and I have a six hour work shift before the appointment. Needless to say I'm cranky and exhausted
Alright ladies, I'm asking for good ju-ju over this way. Yesterday was kind of a big deal for DS. We were finally able to get him in for testing for ADD/ADHD. We've seen signs and symptoms for a few years now (we were told no one will diagnose under the age of 6) and tried everything that we can think of to help him with his behavior, focus and impulsiveness. But now it's effecting how he does at school and how he's doing socially. We'll have the results back in a few weeks and go from there. DH and I have never wanted to put him on any kind of medication (I'm so afraid that it will change who he is personality-wise, and he is the most outgoing, funny, sweet natured kid......I've heard some bad stories about these meds, along with good stories though) but we just need help and guidance to be able to help him. Here's hoping that everything works out and we can find a good path forward for him. Again, any positive thoughts are appreciated ladies! TIA!
The steam mop makes your floors look fabulous! We put in bamboo floors a year and a half ago and then bought a steam mop. Loved it. Sadly we spoke to the installers after using it and they said they are terrible for bamboo and will ruin the floor . We returned it later that day, our regular mop just doesn't make the floor look as great as that steam mop did.
@Katie8687- Find out if your hospital does any local mom groups after birth. Mine hosts a twice monthly group for new moms to come and ask questions, it's led by a lactation consultant. I now have a group about 20 local moms that I still get together with, and am close friends with a few of them now. Meeting over kids is amazing and gives you a focal subject other than yourself, I've found it a really easy common ground! Also, ask people in Target about things they like/don't... rub your stomach while you ask or even say "I'm looking for a carrier to use in September when this baby comes.. what do you think of yours?" Put yourself out there - if the person is rude, you'll probably never see them again (unless it's me.. I live in Target). Having a local couple/group of moms is essential for bouncing questions off of/crazy stories and just to get away a bit! I wish you luck!
@SaraJuul - typical hard wood floors and more importantly tile here that I will be mopping. So pumped. Also have linoleum in the guest and downstairs bathroom, so will do those too! Yippie! I have a Shark vacuum that I'm obsessed with and getting a Shark steam mop! Boom!
@UnwritteN12- First of all, good for you guys to be advocating for your son. ADHD is extremely uncomfortable for children, especially in a school setting. My sister is a kindergarten teacher and sees it all the time - the parents who want to medicate children who show now signs, and others who refuse to get help/medicate those who are just miserable in their own skin.
ADHD medications can be tricky and require a good amount of dose adjustment (not a one size fits all, you'll probably have to fiddle with the dosing with his doctor to find the right dose). BUT! At the right dose, the medication will have your son feel relaxed and allow his personality to shine through, he shouldn't be muted or flat, so don't worry and don't be alarmed if it takes a little time to even it all out. I wish you the best of luck and applaud your attention to his needs - he'll be appreciative when he is able to function and focus.
@UnwritteN12 positive thoughts headed your way for ds! I'm an outpatient therapist and see predominantly kids and adolescents, many with ADHD. Meds are not the only answer, but can be a huge help if he needs them. Also, stimulants work only when you take them, so if he needed to go on them some kids take them only on school days and not weekends or summers. The benefit I see often with these kind of meds is that you know immediately if they are working and to what extent so you can make a quick decision about if they are worth it. In any event, good luck!
@UnwritteN12 I don't know if this will help but here is my story. I was diagnosed with ADHD (inattentive, not hyperactive) as an adult and wish my parents would have sought treatment for me when I was a child. I know college would have been so much better and maybe I would have graduated with my original major. Teachers told my parents to get me tested in grade-school but I got straight A's so my parents didn't think there was a need. I knew from an early age that I wasn't getting things the same way other people were. I developed my own little techniques to help like always having something in my hand to fidget with so I was capable of paying attention (very hard to explain to others who saw it as a distraction and not a vital tool). When I was put on medication as an adult I was so scared it would change my personality and it didn't. Now while pregnant I cannot take the meds and I know my work is suffering and I'm back to my flighty annoying habits at home. The second week (first week was a lot of body adjustment) of taking them I felt like I wore glasses for the first time. I could see typo's, noticed when I was cutting people off in conversation, and when I went to skip subjects. I took a lower dose than the doc initially recommended and higher might be more helpful but I feel weird about it. I don't know much about childhood treatments but I'm happy to try to answer anything.
We went to Buffalo Wild Wings for lunch yesterday (then Toys R Us and Sams Club). I am sitting here dreaming about the fried cheese curds and spicy ranch that we had as an appetizer. The waitress suggested we could get a smaller size than the basket.. uhhh, it's me, my husband and my cheese loving 1 year old - we need the freaking basket, lady! I want them again already, even after the wild gas pains I had last night! YUMMMMM, fried squeaky cheese!
@UnwritteN12 positive thoughts headed your way. No experience but it looks like there is lots of support to find on this board regardless of the outcome.
I have a half hour until my lunch break when I will go buy said steam mop. Then I have to work until 5... it's like Christmas Eve! I'm going to be dying to get home and start mopping! Something is wrong with me, but my floors have been seriously bothering me (it adds to it with a 1 year old who gets colds a lot and is all over that floor - excited to kill some bacteria!!!)
I just peed in our office bathroom, then a friend walked in, so I flushed, washed hands, etc. Then went to the main building's bathroom for my morning poop. Usually I'm ok with going in our office bathroom but she hopped right into the stall next to me. No thanks!
@UnwritteN12 Hoping that it goes well! If he does need meds I know that you and his Dr. will advocate for him find the kind/dosage that is the best for him! I've seen some kids struggle for a bit while the meds are being adjusted, but wow when it finally works for them- amazing!
@AnnaS930 Good idea about the postpartum groups! Adding that to my things to look up. It's so neat to become part of the "mom" club but can be intimidating too. Next time I see a baby wearing mom I'll definitely make small talk.
@Katie8687- I went to my local mom group a few times and was pretty quiet. Did my quick into, asked a couple questions and just observed. Some of the moms already seemed to have formed a group within the group - but I kept going! It was great to get out. After a couple months I started recognizing/being recognized by more and more moms and since it's just a rolling group, new moms joined each time and pretty soon I was able to answer some questions instead of ask (for newer moms than me). I've become friends with moms whose babies are all 3 months younger than my son (or more), and it has been wonderful. A few of them are even considering trying for #2!
I'm back from my nearly two week vacation! I'm just catching up on all this now, but don't have it in me to read 15 pages, so I'm just going to jump in! I hope everyone's weeks have been going well and that I haven't missed too much!
@AnnaS930 I love my Shark vacuum, too, and I'm jealous you're getting the steam mop. We recently upgraded our Shark, and have been discussing the steam mop. Let me know how you like it! Having a good review of it will be more fodder to get DH totally on board.
@Katie8687 if you are into jogging or working out, there are usually mom groups that meet for that! That is how I have found my mommy friends. We meet twice a week and walk/jog with our stroller about 30 min then spend 30 min-1 hour at the playground with our kids just hanging out! It's been great for my weight and social health! Look for stroller strides or fit4mom if that's something you might enjoy.
@UnwritteN12 I hope what ever the outcome is with your son, that you can find something that works best for him and your family! That is so hard to see your child uncomfortable or struggling and not know what to do.
My random of the day.. What do you ladies do for caffeine during pregnancy? I have a toddler so no caffeine just isn't realistic over here haha! I've switched my morning cup to folgers half caf and that seems to be okay for right now. Sometimes in the afternoon I need something else but most days I'm ok with just the one cup of half caf.
@beachmama14 I usually go without, or have tea, but some mornings I just go ahead and have my cup of coffee. Each one is something like ~100mg per 8oz, and we can have up to ~220mg a day. I figure a large cup (~10-12oz) every now and then will be fine. If I start to feel jittery or over-stimulated, I won't finish the cup or will drink some extra water to help flush out the excess.
