I also taught and associated every name with a child and personality. After 9 years teaching I was so worried that I would never find a name that I didn't know. We chose Makenna for our DD because I thought it was unique, pretty, and strong. I know that she will never run into a store and find a mug with her name on it, and I'm okay with that. (We will have to get her one personalized online )
@Lauren0216 - I love that name. It's on my list of possible girls names. And you never know about finding stuff with her name on it. Of course, it's extremely rare, but I have found a couple things with Thea on them... granted, one was in Germany, haha.
@lauren0216 I loved your name (Lauren) for DD, DH didn't love it though. Maybe for this LO if it's a girl. I like Laurel or Lorelai as well. Wishful thinking...DH will not cave!
Baby #1: Elena 4/6/14 Baby #2: Grayson EDD 10/22/16
I also love when a person has a first name as a last name and their parents give them that same name as the surname. So it's just the same name repeated twice. You couldn't think of ANYTHING else? Like David davids or Steven Stevens
My sister went to school with Noel Noel and my huband's classmate was Philip J Philips III.
I taught a Dyamond once... she really was a gem, though I really don't get too many absolutely crazy names at the college level, though. I wonder if they get weeded out before college?
My daughter's name is Niamh. It's a legitimate Irish name pronounced neev. I have a lot of people ask about it, and that's ok. I don't get upset when people can't spell or say it. We were ready for that. I hope she loves her name when she gets older, but if not, she can spell it differently if she wants. At least she's not Nevaeh.
@von1976 lol that might be enough not to name my child Grey. "I wonder why my parents named me Grey?" *random person* "Who knows, maybe they conceived you after reading the book." *child reads book* *child scarred for life*
When we began exploring parenthood we considered fostering kids. I browsed some locally available kids and came across a group of siblings named McBrooklyn, McHazel, McLie and McSkull.
I can't remember the name, but when I was in college I worked at the local Babies R' Us at the registry counter. Expecting parents would fill in a questionnaire by hand with info like the baby's name, and parents names and all that before we set them free to roam with the scanning guns. While the families were scanning I would type the hand-written info into our database. We always had the parents double check the typed copy to make sure everything was how they wanted it. Well, one time I badly misspelled a baby's name. I apologized and went to fix it, and the mom-to-be said "no, wait, I like this better."
I know a Candida (yeast infection). And my cousin named her son Alian (in spanish its pronounced A-lee-ahn) but in English it reads like Alien, he is called Alien a lot!
As for my classes, the "worst" i have gotten so far is Antonia pronounced An-toe-knee-ya. But our school has some interesting ones. Lord Messiah and La'Queen were two that stood out to me.

I'm confused, how else would you pronounce Antonia? It's a beautiful name, like the Willa Cather novel.

It could also be for Meredith Grey from Gray's Anatomy. Not sure if she used an e or a, and I'm feeling too lazy to google it:). Less scandalous though.
Growing up we had girls in our school named Liberty and Justice. We always said (and we were in like 5th grade so that explains the lame joke) that their last name should be "Forall"...Liberty and Justice Forall. They're parent's must have been really patriotic. The names I don't think are actually that bad, but together it's funny.
someone I know named their kid highe. I actually think it's kinda cool but it was confusing for my daughter so I had to add baby in front of his first name so my kid would understand that I wasn't trying to greet her.
As and L&D nurse...I have seen some reall winners. Most recently dad's name was Omar..so the little girl was Omaralyce. We had a set of twins named Josh and Joshua. And so many that I couldn't try to spell again if I tried...these poor kids!
Growing up I had a simi unique name. I love it. Ive only known 3 other people personally with it, and we spell it different. The bad side is my mom got it from an erotic novel. So of course in like 10th grade we had to write a paper of where our name came and present it the class. Needless to say all 3 of us got together and made something up.

Sorry, I realize that my phonetics were not exactly clear. Most pronounce it with saying "tonia" as one sound. More like the name Tony in the middle. This child emphasized the "ANTO" and "KNEE" separately and ended with "ah". (I never did so well in my phonetics class in grad school )

Not going to lie my dad has the same first and last name and so does my brother *side note my brother is adopted and the name was already given to him. I do have to say my brother loved having the same first and last name his nick name was G-squared.

Yeah. I think that's a language and cultural barrier as opposed to an ugly/bad name.

It's the worst when people give twins super similar names! I work in healthcare IT and it really puts the kids at a risk of getting their electronic medical records co-mingled. I've seen a Brianna and Briana, a D'Shawn and J'Shawn... when you have the same gender, the same birthday, and a name that only differs by 1 letter, it's very easy for shit to get messed up.

@BringmemylongswordhoI know a girl named La-a. She was super sweet, we went to high school together and she played clarinet in marching band with me. People would pronounce her name as la a, and she would say "it's la DASH a" your search apparently is inaccurate and I think calling someone a liar is not worth it. This world has a TON of people, a ton. And you saying someone is fabricating a name they've heard just annoys me. Get off of your high horse please, you're not mother of all names and knowledge. La-a ended up moving to another school in a different state. Later I went to cosmetology school with a girl who knew la-a because she moved to her school. Again. You're not the book of all name knowledge.

You might know the one, but personally I'm still waiting for Ladasha to intoduce herself anywhere on the inter webs and dispel the rumors.
The rest of the world is either unwittingly passing around a tasteless, racist joke, or are aware of the urban legend that has its roots in belittling ethnic, particularly African American, names.
@SuperNerd42I don't think the girl should have to make herself publicly known just because people don't believe her name exists. I get that the name was the butt end of a joke, but to be completely honest my problem was the fact that she was calling someone a liar because she said she knows one. Just like I do, who knows we could know the same girl. Either way, I don't like being called a liar and I don't like someone else being called a liar, unless you can go back in someone's past and prove that they're lying then there's no reason to say that someone is fabricating it.
Hyman. I saw a CVS checkout clerk named this about 10 years ago. I still remember it so vividly because I was biting my cheek hard to not laugh!! It would have been better if his name was Hymen, but it reminded me of the same thing.
