@kmolleltz@CopperBoom86@mrscorker Chiming in because DH and I made a deal not to share our name, but my own name is one where my parents decided to call me by my middle name so I figured I'd weigh in from your future-grown-up-babies' perspective! It can be a hassle sometimes (like today, when I realized that for a news shoot I'm doing tomorrow at a school I need to be on a security list, so I had to make sure my colleague gave the school my LEGAL name and not my just middle + last, or every year on the 1st day of school when kids would get confused as the "Matthews" told the teacher "call me Matt" but little Emily was like "call me Katie, thanks!").
Overall, though, I'm attached to my slightly funky little name, and when I got married and changed my last name (and it would have been easy to just drop my first name as well, or reverse the order), I realized just how attached to it I am! It's never caused me any real problems, and if anything, I figure it makes it easier for me to spot spam messages and telemarketers who just call me by my first name.
This is what I was thinking about! I can just picture the first day of school every year (or a substitute teacher) doing the EMILY? and the child responding "Actually its Katie, but yeah I'm here" hah
But I also understand the other peoples reasoning for their preference.
@jillianpardo Arturo is my father's name! I love that name.
I like it too. DH dad is Angel Arturo ( he goes by art) and DH is Adrian Arturo. I wanted Santiago Arturo Pardo but DH said it's way too spanish sounding for a kid who will only be a 1/4 Cuban. Lol!!! Whatever. I think it's a great name. Santiago is also a family name. Nick name: Santi.
I think it's a great name too! I wanted to do Spanish names, but my husband's last name is Smith and he doesn't like the way it flows. If he had his father's last name (Sanchez) I could've chosen all the Spanish names I wanted! Lol. That's why we went with Enzo, which is in honor of my grandfather Enselmo. Not the same, but my husband thinks it sounds better in front of James Smith.
I can't remember who brought up the middle name thing but here it goes:
I go by middle name and it's a pain in the ass. But, my first name is Mary. Mary Emma sounds a lot better than Emma Mary. And my parents never wanted me to go by Mary but it was both of my grandmother's names. The hardest thing was when I changed my name when I got married. I didn't want to drop my first name because it had sentimental meaning (that and my initials would be EGG) and I didn't want four names but I wanted DH's last name.
Similarly, DH's first name is James but goes by Jay. He says that he has never minded correcting people because it's a nickname.
When we decided on names, I was adamant that whatever their first name is, is what they will go by.
@annabenanna - Sabine is going to become much more popular soon enough. I have a coworker from Germany named Sabine, and the name Sabine Wren is a kickass character from Star Wars - The Clone Wars. It's a very popular animated tv show.
@Piperella We're in the same boat! Our last name starts with an "O"! So, considering my fave girl name starts with an "H" and my fave boy name starts with a "B" - that would make my daughter a "HO" and my son would be "B-O". SOOO many people have already brought it up to me - but we've decided not to care. At some point, everyone's name is cause for teasing or poking fun at...we're just going to choose names that we love and worry about the rest later.
I always wanted to use the name George but since the dumb royals used it I feel like it's off the table. I obviously could still use it but now there will be assumptions attached. Like, you absolutely cannot name your kid Bella unless you want everyone to think you love Twilight. Same concept. Stupid Princess stealing my name.

@AllyTheKid wow yeah I think the damage is done on that one. It is a pretty name on its own but I always think of A Streetcar Named Desire (and the Seinfeld takeoff).
My husband vetoed the name Stella (which I absolutely love) because of A Streetcar Named Desire. Can't really blame him when I remember how horrid that book is. Stella is still a beautiful name though.
@Piperella , It just sounds so beautiful.... so French! Sabine, Sabina..... I also like Sadie. I LOVE Amelie! Can you tell I have an affinity for French girl names?
DH a younger brother that died in infancy and so from very early on in our relationship (once we got to the point of talking about future children), he had said that it was pretty much non-negotiable that a boy be named Trevor. I wasn't crazy about the name at the time, but how could I possibly argue with a story like that? DH recently said he would like the middle name to be Gregory in honor of his best friend from high school who passed away a few years ago.
Since DH had pretty much figured out a boys name, he said that I could choose the girl's name. If we have a girl, I wanted to honor both my mom and my grandmother, but unfortunately those are two trending names right now. I had all but settled on Stella Rose (Stella for my grandmother and Rose for my mom) but someone at work recently had a baby and named her Stella Rose as well. I know in my heart that my choosing these two names is not because they are trendy and pretty but because they mean something to me, but the rest of the world doesn't know that. And I know I shouldn't care, and I try really hard not to, but it still bothers me. To make matters worse, DH isn't crazy about Stella - he recently asked me if I had thought more about girls names. He likes Sienna, which is a good name, but it means nothing to me. I know a name doesn't need to mean anything, really, but I feel shitty for setting Stella to the side for a name that has no meaning to me. Does that make sense?
Anyway, I'm sorry - I didn't mean to write a short novel. It's just that I thought we had this all figured out and now all these monkey wrenches keep getting thrown in.
@missteacherlady16 Fuck that, lady. You name your baby girl Stella Rose if that's what is meaningful to you. Your DH is getting to name the baby after two people who mean a lot to him, even though you're not crazy about Trevor so he might not be crazy about Stella but it's beautiful and it means something very important to you. I hear you about the popularity of the name but this is your daughter and she has an important name legacy. That's all that matters.

My husband, his father, and grandfather are all Anthony, so if we have a boy, he will very likely also be Anthony. But they all have different middle names, so that is still up in the air. We might use my last name, but then the poor kid will be Anthony (8-letter German-Jewish last-name-as-middle) (10-letter Italian last name). We also like Archer for a boy.
I'd love to name a girl Vivian Faye. Faye was my grandmother's name. I just really like the name Vivian, and I don't think it's very common.

@kmolleltz Yep, I'm pretty sure that was every first day of school for me--but I think most teachers just updated their lists after that, and I never remember it causing problems or strife!
I did go through a phase at 7 when I wanted to go by my first name because half the girls I knew were Katie's or Kate's, and I thought I had a built-in solution...but I got over it pretty quickly when my mom said it was fine, but we'd just have to start calling everyone we knew to let them know.
I fell in love with the name Leo a couple of years ago. DH's grandfather was Leon, so it would be nice to honor him in that way. Middle names are Hawaiian names in our family, but I haven't thought of one yet. Girls names are harder for me to pick out this time around- I'm really hoping for a boy!
@ball4768 I love the Hawaiian name Mililani for a girl (call her Millie) but no one else seems to feel the same as me! I can see how it can be a bit of a tongue twister...but I think it's pretty!

Yes! Rosalie is the middle name we're using because it's my grandmothers name. Coincidentally, DH's grandma was Alice which will be DD # 2's MN (if we have 2 girls). Oh well, what can you do.

Theodore was our #1 and really only boy's name until that happened. I really don't want my son associated with that family at all, especially if, God forbid, they become more prominent in the coming years.
DH and I have similar taste in girls' names, but boys? Oh dear. Murphy's Law will have this be a boy, because we agree on nothing but the middle name. The only reason we agree on that is because DH has always wanted to honor his grandpa. My family has a long tradition of honoring family with middle names, most of which are old fashioned or unique, so I am totally on board.
A few girls names that we agree on: Kara Maureen Eleanor Erin
My favorite boys names: Graham Rory Shaun (family spelling) Connor (he said maybe)
DH has rejected all, and more and frustratingly hasn't contributed any options
Dennis is my DH's dad's name, and DH's first name, which he doesn't go by. I think everyone in his family just assumes if it's a boy, it will be a Dennis something as well. But...no. I just don't think I can. I really don't like it, like not even a little bit. But how do I nicely explain to his family that I loathe their family name?!
Unfortunately we are an international couple living in Germany, where no one could even pronounce something like Winston, let alone recognize it as a name. Right now my test is DH's German parents and my American parents all have to be able to pronounce the name, which has already taken TONS of names off the list.
For a girl it's pretty easy Annike Ilona, Carina Ilaria, or Annalie (middle name undecided)
For a boy... DH will only accept a traditional German name. I'm talking Wolfgang, Karl-Heinz, Dietrich, Gottfried, Hans-Jürgen, etc. SO HELP ME GOD!

We waited anxiously to see if they were actually going to name their daughter Charlotte. Our three year old is Charlotte Elizabeth...exactly what they named their girl (with the addition of Diana). Not too thrilled, but have not had anyone say anything outside of DH and me. I have a super common first name so I was definitely trying to keep our daughter away from the top listings. Oh well.

I am pushing for Sebastian or Elias.
Here's to hoping for a girl
My best friend had a baby in June. She is American and her husband is German. They needed a name that could be pronounced the same in both English and German. She really wanted something like Otto or Oskar. Her husband vetoed "old man names". They settled on Sebastian.
@klv how funny we discussed both Otto and Oskar. We actually named our dog Otto I am sure I will be discussing this topic again later and asking all of you for your American input!
Charlotte Pearl is pretty, and I love Lottie as a nickname!
We basically have a girl name picked out, though we'll go to the hospital with a shortlist -- as my husband says, "It doesn't seem fair to give a person a name before we've looked them in the eye." Boys, no idea. I feel like we ruled out every boy name in the universe except the one we gave our son. Which, of course, means this baby is going to be a boy, right?
@vcabbyw seriously, boy names are hard! Girls have so many categories to choose from, but boy names are either too common, too weird, too nerdy, or too girly. Blah.
We have pretty much settled on Lorelai Grace for a girl. If we have a boy his first name will be Landen but we need another L for the middle name since we are giving him my FIL's initials. I like Landen Luke or Landen Lyle. SO likes Landen Lane or Landen Lee. Any boy L name suggestions welcome!
Josephine Rose Henry James (Yes, I realize this is an author, and also an author I actually despise, but they're family names.)
Margaret Grace or Margaret Priscilla as a backup girl's name. We're screwed if we ever have a second boy. I can't find another boy name I really like, other than Frank. But I refuse to have Hank and Frank as a sibset.
For a girl Felicity Joy. (my grandmother is Marie Joyce, but goes by Joyce. Many girls in my family have the middle name Marie, so we wanted to honor her and I like the way Felicity Joy sounds better than Felicity Joyce)

@books&icecream I looooove traditional German names! I begged for Johannes but DH doesn't like it. I also like Christoph, Matthias, Friederich, Heinrich, Holger...I could go on. Very strong names
My in-laws are Polish and Zigmund is a family name, so our only boy name right now is Zigmund Wade (probably call him Ziggy. Oh, and Wade is because of Deadpool, lol. DH has been a Deadpool fanatic since forever, but I don't hate it so I'm rolling with it for now).
Nothing on girls yet. DD is Elizabeth Rose. My middle name is Elizabeth and my grandmother was Rosemary. I wanted DD to be Rosemary Grace, but that got vetoed by her father. I wonder what DH would say about using Rosemary; I haven't asked him yet. DH's grandmother was Dorothy, so like Rosemary Dot or something? I clearly haven't thought this all the way through yet lol.
