  • @LGW2015 I forgot you're also in PGH. I had no idea our zoo lost accreditation! What does that mean, though, because it's obviously still up and open?
  • also my UO is that I hate cars or stereos in general that have turbo bass or whatever you call it. The thump thump thump makes me nauseous, even when I'm not pregnant

@kmolleltz I hate that too! My neighbor has a friend who blasts his music like that whenever he's over. Our windows literally vibrate. I usually just ignore it, but I'm getting horrible headaches nowadays. Hubby is going to go talk to him about it, but I'm afraid he won't tell his friend to turn it down. If I come home after baby is born and that music is thumping, I will call the cops.

I guess another UO I have: I *did* know that about the Jimmy Johns owner/CEO/whatever. But I have no plans to stop eating there. I assume that if I knew the hobbies/beliefs of most business owners, I wouldn't agree with a lot of them. If I had known that about JJs before I tried it, I wouldn't have started eating there. But I'm not going to stop enjoying something that I love because of a disgusting human being. I understand why people don't want to give him their money, but JJs is comfort food for me.

  • Oh man I was hoping someone would bring up vaccines to take some heat off me haha. I'll gladly debate vaccines any day (pro-vaccine in case that wasn't clear).
  • I agree tanks could be bigger. The people dying is awful but one death was a drunk guy who snuck in and jumped in the tank after hours. Not the whales fault. Some of the other drownings were accidental in things like the whale thought they were playing. You take that job getting in the tank you take that risk. Never said I was for the people in the shows.
Although if someone wants to do that I'll def watch.

it bothers me how I know some people that are so vehemently anti-Sea World yet have no problem with zoos.
Bigger tanks wouldn't allow them to live longer or experience life as they would in the wild.

And don't worry, I'm anti-zoo too. I haven't brought DS to one yet because I can't find one that's ethical enough or focuses enough on conservation for my taste. But I'm also anti-swimming with dolphins, anti-Barnum and Bailey's Circus and anti-eating animals. Animal rights for the win!

ETA: If DS wants to see a whale, we'll go on a whale watch. If he wants to see an elephant, he's probably shit out of luck.
You'll just have to take him on am African Safari then
  • I had to have Jimmy Johns for lunch.

And I HATE Firehouse Subs. I've tried multiple things and I just can't like it.
  • @LGW2015 I forgot you're also in PGH. I had no idea our zoo lost accreditation! What does that mean, though, because it's obviously still up and open?
The reason they lost accreditation wasn't because of the way they treated their elephants, it's because the elephant handlers and zoo keepers would have had to change the way they interacted with the elephants in an attempt to increase safety for the handlers and they didn't feel as if the new requirements were necessary. It would have greatly impacted the way they took care of the animals and so they would rather lose that accreditation than change the way of life at that exhibit.

  • @PeggyOlsonFTW thanks for the link! So glad to see my Zoo is accredited and the aquarium I love.

There is a Portland aquarium but the owners are assholes have have killed many of their animals due to not wanting to pay for medical treatment. I cannot believe they haven't been shut down.

All this talk of Jimmy Johns, Firehouse, and Panera makes me sad that I only have Subway in a 45 minute radius and that's like the Walmart of sandwich places.

  • @mizzkbrat okay you're wrong but okay.

    ;)

(it took DH several times before he found one he likes- the beef and cheddar)
  • I'm going to have to try this Jimmy Johns. Looks like there is one not too far from my work. But at home, all I have is a Togo's and a Subway and I usually have Togo's twice a week. All this sandwich talk is making me want a hot pastrami for dinner :)

  • @WinchestertoPittsburgh @JamieK1882 yeah, that's what I remember too. It was about limiting elephants' exposure to humans among other things because it tends to stress them out. As far as losing accreditation goes, the only thing I know it affected specifically is the zoo's access to rotating exhibits. There was a penguin exhibit that the zoo was supposed to be receiving but because they lost accreditation they had to forfeit their place and get re-entered into the lottery or something. It might also affect funding but idk!

@celette482 ahhhh I had firehouse subs last week for the first time (beef and cheddar) and it was amazingggg!

@cd92007 , I'll have a double double just for you!  I love in n out..... you know who doesn't?  My SO!  He thinks their burgers are just "mediocre."  I almost broke up with him.  I have In n Out about once a month and when I'm feeling "healthy", I just get it protein style.... but it's never the same.  That bun has the perfect crunch.

I've never had Taco Bueno.  Now I'm curious to try.
  • @krzyriver that makes no sense to me, I take my FI's kids to the doctor anytime they need to go.
  • @annabenanna Aw man, bummer SO doesn't like In N Out! I'd be driving myself through the drive through haha! Taco Beuno is a Texas thing and so yummy (but of course unhealthy). But I do also miss all the great Mexican food in CA, too. Ahh.

  • I have not, but I totally would get professional Halloween pictures taken if I could afford to haha Halloween is our family-favorite holiday!
  • Has anyone else noticed that most of our boards end up about food?! Haha this made me chuckle!

My UO, I don't know why but I just don't like baby clothes that says "Daddy's little" this or "Mommys" that. Mostly because they are always saying "Angel" or "princess" for a girl or "slugger" and such for a boy. I don't like defining genders by colors or stereotypes and when I see those clothes it just makes me cringe a bit. I also feel like it takes "ownership" of the baby somehow by either parent. I know that may sound weird but for my DD at my shower my ex's family bought ALL "Daddy" clothes and it drove me insane!!
@ladyshark311 YAAAAAS I totally agree, shirts with "mommy's little ..." Or "daddy's little ..." are the worst!! I ended up with a bunch as gifts for DS and I definitely never put them on him. Actually, I kind of hate all shirts with slogans on them, they're just so cheesy!

I completely  agree!!  I put them on once and tooh a picture to send to the person who gave it to me. It was just easier that way.
  • Taco Bueno is the best. Taco Cabana not far behind. Texas has awesome Mexican fast food!
  • @krzyriver , I'm so upset for you.  I can't imagine that you don't have "rights" to your SS because you're not the bio-mom, when your SS lives with you!  That's kinda crazy.
  • @annabenanna Thank you. And yeah, I think it's crazy too. If someone had told me that that had happened to them, I think I would've called MUD. Lol. One of many things I've had to get used to...along with people telling me not to call my stepson my son and people telling me I don't really know what it feels like to be a parent. Le sigh.

  • @krzyriver My parents divorced when I was 2 and my Dad re-married when I was 5 so I don't remember it any other way but my step-mom is just as much a mother to me as my bio mom and my bio mom is amazing. I have different but equally as rich relationships with both of them. My mom married my step dad when I was 10 so it took a little longer to develop my relationship with him but we're very close now as well. Keep your head up. You are 100% a parent. It might not be in the same way but it's equally as meaningful.

  • @krzyriver It isn't just you. When I was married many years ago, I went to the doctor with my then husband and his son. I went to sign him in and they asked if I was his mother. Why they even asked me that, I'll never know. It wasn't like they knew his bio mom because he had never been there but anyway, they wouldn't even let me sign him in! I mean, his father was sitting 5 feet from me but he had to be the one to sign him in and fill out his paperwork. It was ridiculous, especially when you know I had to help him with everything on the paperwork anyway.

My UO is that while I love you ladies being all wild and crazy for eating sandwiches (I partake in them from time to time, too), I will not go back to a Jimmy Johns again because it supports the CEO's hobby.  The CEO is an avid trophy hunter.  He kills elephants, rhinos, zebras, leopards, etc. and poses next to them... I just can't support that.
OMG I wish I was still in ignorance on this one. I really like JJ's salad wrapped option and freaking A. Why?! Oh well. Just don't tell me anything compromising about Schlotzky's . I freaking love their original and if I had to boycott cinnabon I might cry forever.
I love love love schlotzkys. JJ ingredients seem really low quality. Firehouse is way better than JJ. Nothing beats a Publix sub though.  Every time I'm back in FL I get one.

I think mayonnaise is disgusting! It smells weird and tastes nasty. I don't get it. When I make chicken salad or something like that usually requires it I use plain Greek yogurt or sour cream (or a mix of the two). I think it tastes exactly the same or better. And it's not greasy/heavy from the mayo.
I love mayo. However? We switched to "just mayo". It's egg free, non gmo, "insert latest marketing hot word". It's great and much healthier.  I can't stand miracle whip.

  • I'm going to sound like an advertisement but I don't care. If it's not Duke's mayo, it is not worth eating.

  • pity me we have no jimmy johns no firehouse and I absolutely HATE MAYO
