My UO is that basketball sucks. Any and all basketball. Including NCAA. If one more person asks me who I'm rooting for or if I made my bracket, I am going to scream! I couldn't care any less than I already do.
Agreed. I loathe basketball.

My UO is that all high schools should be extended an hour per day permanently for every grade and have that hour dedicated to practical life skills like paying taxes, cooking the basics, voting, and your personal rights when dealing with law enforcement. I know the parents, students, and teachers would all hate the extra hour but we need to prepare teens for adult life. Edit to add: I'm in agreement about the tomatoes, but I have a semi legitimate reason. Apparently Im not exactly allergic to them, but I have an intolerance toward their acidity. Same goes for pineapples.

While I agree with the practical life skills, I disagree with the extra hour. No one is going to want to pay teachers extra for it, and no one is going to want to pay for teachers to get the training they'll need for it. I would need information/training on how to explain taxes to my students. While I do take time out of my regular classes to explain voting and other parts of American life, I do this as a teacher of migrants and refugees. They need to learn about American life in order to be better residents. It's a catch-22. It's necessary, but no one will want to pay teachers for the extra time.

This. When Chicago public schools wanted to increase the school day by x% and the teachers then demanded a raise by x% there was a huge backlash from the public and the school board and the teachers went on strike. I will never understand why teachers are expected to be saints and do things for free. As if we don't already pay enough of our own money and time into the job. some have outright expectations that teachers SHOULD give their time for free because it's what's best for the kids. As if we don't have families or lives of our own and our time isn't as valuable as any other job.
Eta. That just got me a little riled up. On that note, I agree that there should be more taught about life skills. But as berkebaby said, it won't happen because of modern educational culture now

While I totally agree that trades should be offered and taught as options earlier on in school, I cannot stand when politicans think our schools should just be about preparing for the workforce. What are children, cogs in a machine? We are nothing without our arts and our humanity and the future is grim when $$ is all that matters.
